Barriers to Prayer & How to Overcome Them w Mary Jane Geers

“When we devote ourselves, when we love the Lord our God more than anyone or anything else, then idols will have to fall.” Today our Moms in Prayer Michigan State Coordinator, Mary Jane Geers, joins us to talk about overcoming barriers to prayer. Prayer isn’t always the easiest, most convenient or comfortable thing to do, but the fruit that comes from it lasts for eternity. Listen in as Mary Jane takes us to God’s Word and reminds us Who holds the victory.

The Moms in Prayer Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. To find practical and spiritual advice to help you grow into the parent you want to be visit ChristianParenting.org

    ABOUT OUR GUESTS

Wrestling with inner arguments immediately began after receiving an invitation to a Moms in Prayer group: “I’ll sound like a fool.” “I don’t have time for that.” “What’s the point?” Fears, idols, and doubts rose up in opposition to what Mary Jane knew was the right thing to do. She didn’t feel like doing the uncomfortable, the inconvenient, nor the irrational.

    But God.

Through Holy Spirit’s conviction and empowerment, she said “yes” to a friend’s (and the Lord’s) invitation to attend a Moms in Prayer group. Despite the fear of others, the opposition of her flesh, and the lies of the enemy, she showed up. And is beyond glad that she did!

Mary Jane cannot imagine how radically different life would have been without Moms in Prayer.

Now 20 years later, after her first yes to Moms in Prayer, she can testify that she has seen many children, including her own three daughters, grow up to love, serve and follow the Lord. In addition, by God’s grace, school communities have been sustained and strengthened despite the temptations and trials of this world. Finally, praying God’s good and beautiful word has helped her and other moms to live victoriously in Christ instead of unnecessarily defeated by the enemy.

Praise be to Jesus Christ, who has destroyed the barriers! Fellow sisters in Christ, may we demolish arguments and be found faithful to follow the Lord, no matter what He asks us to do, especially with Moms in Prayer.

    SCRIPTURES

We must demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7 NKJV

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ Mark 12:30 NIV

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

    Matthew 6:33 NIV

not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:25 NIV

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. James 1:6 NIV

God’s Great Love Casts Out Fear | Part Two w Fern Nichols

“When you’re in the Word daily and see God’s love over and over again, it gets easier to immediately trust Him. And that then means the fear is not there. Fear is not of God because God is love.” Today we welcome back Moms in Prayer Founder, Fern Nichols, for part two of God’s Great Love Casts Out Fear. She helps us fill our arsenals with God’s Word to fight against the enemy and soak in the truth of God’s love. God not only shows us His great love, He IS love. And that changes everything.

The Moms in Prayer Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. To find practical and spiritual advice to help you grow into the parent you want to be visit ChristianParenting.org

    ABOUT OUR GUEST

Fern Nichols is a former elementary school teacher and the founder of Moms in Prayer International, a prayer movement that mobilizes women around the world to gather together to pray for their children and schools. In 1984, Fern was fearful about sending her two eldest children off to junior high. She knew the school would be a battlefield for their hearts and minds. She realized the warfare would be intense and to fight in this battle she needed to invite other moms to pray. She called a mom and asked her to pray with her for their children and school. Her response was an immediate “yes,” and that was the humble beginning of Moms in Prayer that now spans the USA in every state and is in more than 150 countries. Fern has traveled to almost every continent in the world speaking, teaching and training women how to pray effectively. She and her husband Rle have been married for over 50 years. They were involved with Campus Crusade for Christ (now CRU) for 15 years. They have four children and 10 grandchildren.

    SCRIPTURES

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Luke 12:32 NIV

But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. Jude 1:20-21 ESV

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 1 John 3:1 NIV

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 NIV

He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Luke 10:27 NIV

Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:23b NIV

And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts, living within you as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love; and may you be able to feel and understand, as all God’s children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high his love really is; Ephesians 3:17-18 TLB

    When I am afraid,

    I will trust in you.

In God, whose word I praise,

in God I trust; I will not be afraid.

What can mere mortals do to me? Psalm 56:3-4 CSB

    Praise the Lord, my soul;

all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

    Praise the Lord, my soul,

and forget not all his benefits—

    who forgives all your sins

        and heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit

and crowns you with love and compassion,

    But from everlasting to everlasting

the Lord’s love is with those who fear him,

and his righteousness with their children’s children—

with those who keep his covenant

and remember to obey his precepts. Psalm 103:1-4, 17-18 NIV

We need have no fear of someone who loves us perfectly; his perfect love for us eliminates all dread of what he might do to us. If we are afraid, it is for fear of what he might do to us and shows that we are not fully convinced that he really loves us. 1 John 4:18 TLB

For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand,

Who says to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you.’ Isaiah 41:13 NASB

I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 NIV

‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you. Jeremiah 32:17 ESV

my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:2 ESV

No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Romans 4:20-21 ESV

Victorious in Christ w Sally Burke

“God wants to take your fears and worries and transform them into mighty prayers. He wants you to be victorious in your life—not just you, but your children too.” Today we welcome back our President, Sally Burke, to share about the new Moms in Prayer theme! Listen in to hear what the ministry will be focusing on for the next two years. Here’s a little teaser: “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:57-58

    ABOUT OUR GUESTS

Sally Burke’s introduction to the ministry in 1990 was life changing. Compelled by joy and the hope God gave as she prayed with others for her children and their schools, Sally began to reach out and share with other moms—first as a Moms in Prayer group leader, then area coordinator for her hometown of Temecula, California, and later as regional coordinator for Riverside County. In 2008, Sally became the Director of Field Ministry at Moms in Prayer headquarters, overseeing ministry expansion worldwide. Today, in her role as President of Moms in Prayer International, her vision remains unchanged, that more children and schools and moms might experience God’s life-changing answers to prayer. Sally is also an international speaker, teacher and author of Raise Them UpStart with PraiseUnshaken and the Unshaken Study Guide.

As a child growing up in Florida, Sally was fascinated with the space program and began her career as a space shuttle engineer with a Master of Science in Management. After her marriage and the birth of two children, Sally and her husband came to faith in Christ, and Moms in Prayer soon became a top priority. She and husband, Ed, now have four grown children, two sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren. In her leisure time, you’ll find Sally on a walk/run, curled up with a good book or enjoying the company of friends.

    SCRIPTURES

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9 NIV

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:57-58 ESV

For I handed down to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 NASB

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. 2 Corinthians 2:14 NASB1995

God is able to fill us and our children with the courage we need even when we are fearful or face rejection. He can make a way! Those situations that seem so big to us are not impossible for our God!

    SCRIPTURES

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:10-12 ESV

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. So resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brothers and sisters who are in the world. 1 Peter 5:8-9 NASB

Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well; John 15:20a NASB

    in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

    2 Corinthians 4:4,6-9 NASB1995

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Matthew 5:43-47 ESV

After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 5:10-11 NASB

Beatitudes: Building Godly Character in Women | The Peacemakers w Janet Combs

“He is our peace. We have peace WITH God and we can have the peace OF God as we go through our ups and downs and struggles in life.” Today we continue in our series, Beatitudes: Building Godly Character in the Woman of God, by welcoming Moms in Prayer Board Member, Janet Combs. We dive into the seventh beatitude, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Janet reminds us of the peace we can find in our Savior despite the circumstances we are walking through. And also how we can be peacemakers in a world filled with turmoil because it is Him working in and through us.

The Moms in Prayer Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. To find practical and spiritual advice to help you grow into the parent you want to be visit ChristianParenting.org

    ABOUT OUR GUESTS

Janet Combs is first and foremost a wife of 40 years, a mom of 5 and a grandma of 6. One daughter joined them as a young teen and has been an amazing blessing to the Combs family. Janet is a former special education and elementary teacher. While staying home with her kids, Janet spent decades teaching children at church, at VBS and at Good News Clubs. She also taught the teacher’s training for her local CEF (Child Evangelism Fellowship). Over 20 years of Precepts Bible study with Kay Arthur has been a great inspiration for her to have a passion to go deep into God’s word. Another major influence in Janet’s life has been her family’s mission work for many years in Haiti. She joined Moms in Prayer years ago and is now a member of the Moms in Prayer Board of Directors. More recently, Janet has been involved in women’s ministry teaching.

    SCRIPTURES

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9 ESV

For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6 CSB

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. Romans 5:1, 10 ESV

Everything is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:18 CSB

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.

Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus,

who, existing in the form of God,

did not consider equality with God

    as something to be exploited.

    Instead he emptied himself

by assuming the form of a servant,

taking on the likeness of humanity.

And when he had come as a man,

he humbled himself by becoming obedient

    to the point of death—

even to death on a cross. Philippians 2:3-8 CSB

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1 NIV

Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Romans 14:19 NIV

We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death. 1 John 3:14 CSB

Beatitudes: Building Godly Character in Women | The Pure in Heart w Diana de Fouler

“Pure in heart is being made clean by the Spirit, by the Word. It is putting God in every thought, word and action. And keeping Him present in our day-to-day lives.” Today we continue in our series, Beatitudes: Building Godly Character in the Woman of God, by welcoming back our Central America Director, Diana de Fouler. We dive into the sixth beatitude, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Diana reminds us that our sin has not just been covered, but completely removed. As we look to Him and Who He is, confess and let His Word wash over us, we will find the freedom of a pure heart.

    SCRIPTURES

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Matthew 5:8 ESV

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 NIV

For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our[g] conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Hebrews 9:13-14 ESV

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?

And who shall stand in his holy place?

He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

who does not lift up his soul to what is false

and does not swear deceitfully. Psalm 24:3-4 ESV

Beatitudes: Building Godly Character in Women | The Merciful w Georgene Kamphuis

“He wants me to be merciful like He is merciful, and not only be merciful, but to love mercy.” Today we continue in our series, Beatitudes: Building Godly Character in the Woman of God, by welcoming our Moms in Prayer Graphic Designer, Georgene Kamphuis. We dive into the fifth beatitude, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy.” Georgene draws us into the merciful heart of our Father and shows us how we can extend that same mercy to those around us. It isn’t always what we give, but also what we withhold.

    ABOUT OUR GUESTS

Georgene Kamphuis is a graphic designer on the Communications Team for Moms in Prayer International. She designs for web and print, creating images for the MIP website and products, event graphics, presentations, social media, and publications. After several years working in the corporate world as a designer Georgene became a full-time mom who freelanced from home. For a few years she volunteered to do graphics for MIP and then about 16 years ago joined their staff.

She was first introduced to Moms in Prayer in 1989 when she met another mom interested in praying for their children and the new elementary school in the neighborhood.  She and her husband live in North San Diego County, California. Three daughters, their husbands, two teenage grandsons, and a three-year-old granddaughter keep her praying in a Moms in Prayer Group every week. There have been countless answers to prayer these 35 years of praying for her kids, their kids, and their schools.

Georgene loves gardening, reading, and keeping in touch with her friends.  Working full-time for Moms in Prayer with other women with the same passion for prayer and Jesus hasn't been like working, but fun, and a gift from God.

    SCRIPTURES

Make the soul of Your servant joyful, For to You, Lord, I lift up my soul. For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all who call upon You. Psalm 86:4-5 ESV

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 1 Corinthians 2:9 ESV

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 NIV

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16 NIV

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Mercy and truth go before You. Psalm 89:14 NASB

The LORD is merciful and gracious,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

    He will not always chide,

nor will he keep his anger forever.

He does not deal with us according to our sins,

nor repay us according to our iniquities.

For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

        so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;

as far as the east is from the west,

so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

As a father shows compassion to his children,

so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. Psalm 103:8-13 ESV

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Luke 6:38 NIV
