2395 - Casual Friday! w/ Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; Ryan Grim

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Ryan Grim, reporter at and co-founder of Drop Site News, co-host of Counter Points, to round up the week in news before the holidays. First, Sam and Emma take a look at the spending fight on Capitol Hill after House Republicans failed to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government open. They take a look at CNN's Kaitlan Collins trying to figure out how New York Rep. Mike Lawler can blame House Republicans' failure to pass a spending bill on...Democrats. Then, they're joined by Rep. Ocasio-Cortez as she gives her breakdown of what is happening in the spending fight on the ground on the Hill, and how Elon Musk essentially tanked all forward progress with his posts on Twitter. Heading into a broader discussion, AOC discusses the House Oversight Committee race for ranking member, how she is interpreting that in terms of progress, and she understands her motivations and advocacies as someone steeped in the process of mass movements while representing such an institutional body in Congress. She ends the conversation by framing losses (both in the Oversight Committee and in November) as ones that should not always be seen as fully definitional and declarative of a struggle being completely lost, and take what slight progress they represent as motivation and the impetus to continue to fight for what she, and we, believe in. Then, Ryan Grim joins the program to react to some of AOC's comments, as well as to discuss the fast track to oligarchy this country is on seeing that Elon Musk basically dictated a continuing resolution bill not pass in Congress. Sam, Emma, and Ryan discuss the trajectory they think the Musk/Trump relationship may take and what that would like (potentially catastrophic), and what kind of implications and knock-on effects shutting the government down for the rest of Trump's transition would have. They then discuss how the Democratic Party appears to be a ship without a rudder, the genuine shock that some rank-and-file members got at AOC's showing for the Oversight Committee ranking member floor vote, and the...concerning details that came out in the Wall Street Journal's bombshell reporting on President Biden's functionality during his entire presidency.

And in the Fun Half, Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew take a look at the insane police escort Luigi Mangione received after being extradited to New York, before taking a look at friend of the show Jamie Peck sparring with Chris Cuomo as to the strong, cathartic reaction a large number of people are having to the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. They then check in on Joe Scarborough's attempt to martyr Liz Cheney, Tim Pool stressing out HARD that the Democratic Party may be attempting to create multiple Hasan Pikers, and end on a Majority Report holiday tradition: revisiting when Sam went on CNN to fight for the war on Christmas. Plus, your IM's!

2394 - Trudeau On The Ropes; US Sanctions & The War Machine w/ Luke Savage, Jeff Stein

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with writer Luke Savage, writer based in Toronto, author of The Dead Center: Reflections On Liberalism And Democracy After the End Of History, to discuss the current state of Canadian politics. Then, she speaks with Jeff Stein, White House economics reporter at The Washington Post, to discuss his recent multi-part series on economic sanctions for the Post entitled "The Money War." First, Emma runs through updates on the GOP’s continuing dysfunction over their spending bill, Trump’s prosecution in Georgia, the Wall Street Journal’s major report on Biden staffers’ extensive work to downplay and hide the state of Biden’s mental decline since 2019, the nomination of Pete Hegseth, Amazon teamsters’ strike, South Carolina’s attack on Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood, Israeli’s continuing offensives in Lebanon and Gaza, the repatriation of the final inmates in Guantanamo Bay, and the confirmed appearance Bird Flu in the US, before diving a little deeper into “President Musk’s” public pressure campaign to get GOP Congresspeople in line with his spending plan. Luke Savage then joins, diving right into the dwindling support for Trudeau’s administration in the wake of a weak, nationalist-oriented response to Trump’s threat of tariffs against Canada, unpacking the growing dissent from within his coalition before Savage and Emma briefly contrast his response to Trump’s threats with that from the US’ other neighbor-under-threat in Mexico’s President Sheinbaum. Stepping back, Luke examines the rise and fall of Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party in Canada, coming to power by leading a major win in 2015 and becoming a hyper-public anti-Trump resistance figure in the process, only for growing economic issues coming out of the COVID-19 Pandemic alongside a poor choice by Trudeau to call for snap elections in 2021 putting the Liberal Party in an insecure situation and forcing a deal with the NDP social democrats. Moving forward in the story, Savage walks Emma through the lingering struggles Liberals have faced in the wake of this deal, with their (and Trudeau’s, in particular) refusal to acknowledge the ongoing cost of living crisis and the failures of their economic agenda significantly dragging down NDP’s public standing to the point of pulling out of the deal this past September, issues capitalized on by a Conservative Party that is, at the bare minimum, willing to recognize the issues facing the Canadian electorate. After expanding on the role of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, his success in hiding his unpopular faux-populist crypto-libertarianism behind direct, issues-based communication, and the pretty clear parallels with Biden and Democrats’ recent failures in the 2024 election, Savage wraps up by tackling Canada’s dearth of an actual system to remove someone like Trudeau from power, and how this situation could (and is likely to) develop. Jeff Stein then joins, jumping right into his extensive research at the Washington Post into the explosion of the role of sanctions in US foreign policy, and the vast material impact they have on local populations, first outlining how this policy proliferated in the wake of the serious backlash to US military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan – with Joe Biden taking Trump’s expansion of the sanction regime to an entirely new level after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – and how it aligns with the increasing power of the executive branch. Stepping back, Stein walks Emma through the role sanctions play in avoiding both military AND diplomatic intervention on the global stage, despite minimal evidence of their efficacy, and the growing worry inside of government of their long-term impacts with limited short-term benefits, before they wrap up with the myriad material issues that have arisen from the expansion of the US sanction regime, with devastating effects on the abused and exploited populations that these sanctions are ostensibly issued in response to, alongside the (less devastating) unforeseen financial costs to US taxpayers.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder as they do a deep dive into the recent Wall Street Journal report tracing Biden’s staffers’ extensive efforts – beginning in 2019 – to hide and disguise Biden’s mental decline from the public, before touching on the continuing cult of senility around Biden. A Jersey caller unpacks breaking through the media’s commitment to Democratic leadership, Alex from Oakland unpacks Biden’s plan to encourage AI data centers on federal land, and the MR Crew explores the NYPD’s ongoing crackdown on Amazon teamsters’ labor action. Timothee Chalamet pitches Theo Von on affordable housing in NYC, plus, your calls and IMs!

2393 - Union Made Parental Leave & Democrats As A Rudderless Ship w/ Madi Oates & Michelle Eisen; David Dayen

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Madi Oates, shift supervisor and bargaining delegate for Starbucks Workers United (SWU), based in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Michelle Eisen, organizing member of SWU, to discuss Starbucks recent update to its parental leave policy. And then, Sam is joined by David Dayen, executive editor at The American Prospect and co-host of the Organized Money podcast, to discuss the prospects of the Democratic Party going into 2025 and beyond. First, Sam runs through updates on the GOP’s continuing resolution, the Matt Gaetz ethics report, the Fed’s rate cuts, Senate judicial confirmation, Lina Khan’s FTC, Luigi Mangione, Palestinians’ and Palestinian-Americans’ suit against the State Department, Trump’s legal woes, Amazon labor action, and the US’ TikTok ban, also expanding on the GOP infighting around the continuing resolution and Mike Johnson’s message to unelected billionaire bureaucrats Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. Madi Oates and Michelle Eisen then join as they dive right into the major victory won by Starbucks Workers United in securing the same level of paid parental leave for Starbucks’ workers as it provides for its executives, tackling the major exploitation and effort put on the company’s pregnant workers and unpacking the various policy benefits that this negotiation has won. Stepping back, Eisen and Oates paint a picture of the major progress SWU has had in expanding its US presence, organizing some 5% of stores nationally, and the major progress they’ve made in securing rights and fair wages for their members, before looking forward to the future of this fight, as Starbucks’ myriad open unfair labor practice cases and lack of a clear economic proposal come into their crosshairs. David Dayen then joins, first touching on the coalescence of a rudderless Biden Administration with a floundering Democratic Party that seems incapable of working as an opposition party, dissecting the overlap of these issues in the role the party’s gerontocratic class putting their egos and ideological commitments over the need for the party to readapt to a younger electorate with vastly evolved concerns. Expanding on this, Dayen and Sam zero in on the role Nancy Pelosi has played in legitimizing this cling to power (even amid failure), with her recent obstruction of AOC’s bid for Dem chair of the Congressional Oversight Committee serving as a key example of her refusal to back down from dictating a party for which she is no longer Minority Leader. Wrapping up, they assess the problem of Democrats’ utter dearth of a plan for acting as an organized opposition to Trump, and whether internal dissent in the party will be able to push leadership back on track.

And in the Fun Half: Sam unpacks Trump’s plan to privatize the USPS, with some helpful confusion added by a member of the TimCast team, before tackling RFK Jr’s ongoing pivot right on abortion. Sean Hannity is suddenly pro-Europe, Kowalski from Nebraska helps us understand why food in the US is unhealthier than in Europe (freedom… and deregulation), and the DOGE caucus sets their sites on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Hillary from Brooklyn helps us understand the NYPD’s attempt to charge Luigi Mangione with terrorism, and John from San Antonio parses through the turnout and demographic numbers for the 2024 election, plus, your calls and IMs!

2392 - AOC, RFK Jr. & Archaeology As A Weapon In The West Bank w/ Jasper Nathaniel

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Jasper Nathaniel, writer of the Infinite Jaz newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent piece in The Drift magazine entitled "In Ruins: Archaeological Warfare in the West Bank." First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GOP’s continuing struggle to get a continuing resolution, Pelosi blocking AOC’s run for Oversight chair, the Senate’s National Defense Authorization Act, Ukraine’s bombing of Russia’s chemical weapons chief, TikTok’s Supreme Court fight, Trump’s EV fight, RFK’s meeting with Senators, Trudeau’s shakey administration, US wealth inequality, and Josh Hawley’s CTC for the middle- and upper-classes, before diving a little deeper into Nancy Pelosi’s (notably no longer a member of party leadership) torpedoing of AOC’s bid to be Dem chair on the Congressional Oversight Committee, and touching on Trump’s attempt to run cover for his health and safety-related administrative choices and their rabid anti-vax beliefs. Jasper Nathaniel then joins, diving right into the concept of “Judea and Samaria” that has been advanced recently by American zionists like Bill Clinton and Mike Huckabee, unpacking its deep history as the zionist term for the West Bank, and how that relates to a rapidly progressing agenda of Israeli annexation of the Palestinian West Bank, with Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotricht recent transfer of power over the West Bank away from civil authority, and his use of antiquity law to expand Israeli control over the region. Stepping back, Nathaniel walks Sam and Emma through the historical relationship between archeology and the zionist colonization of Palestine, beginning with the British surveying of the region whilst under their control at the turn of the century, where they grounded their research within biblical terms, directly assigning any discoveries to Biblical passages and civilizations, a tactic directly picked up on by the burgeoning Zionist movement at the time, and employed as a hard science as they pushed their agenda of creating “facts on the ground” to legitimize their right to the land Palestinian had lived on for generations. Expanding on this story, Jasper tackles the continued abuse of archeology by the Zionist regime over the following few decades, with the 1967 border agreement immediately coming under violation by Israeli archeologists, before coming back to the present to unpack Israel’s utterly destructive approach to the genocide of Gaza in contrast with their slow, technocratic approach to slowly revoking the autonomy of various regions in the West Bank, tackling how this authority is grounded in much of the West Bank’s presence on supposedly “protected” archeological sites. Looking to the supposed “authority” that grounds Israel’s ongoing annexation of the West Bank, Nathaniel touches on the transferring of West Bank management from Israel’s Civil authority to their Archeological authority, before wrapping up with an extensive conversation on the overwhelming ubiquity – and banality – of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, and the future of the project for Palestinian liberation under a second Trump Administration.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle Trump’s recent comments on the relationship between vaccines and autism (and Fox’s unsurprising response), and watch CNN’s Michael Smerconish bemoan the lack of a public vigil for the recently murdered CEO of UnitedHealthcare, contrasting him with folks like John Lennon, George Floyd, and the victims of Kyle Rittenhouse. Mark Robinson reclaims the “Minisoldr” handle, MAGA freaks out over drone sightings, and Tim Pool has a boot to lick over Emma and Kyle Kulinski’s Joe Rogan comments, plus, your calls and IMs!

2391 - Reconciling Labor & Environmental Imperatives w/ Stefania Barca

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Stefania Barca, distinguished researcher at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, to discuss her recent book Workers Of The Earth: Labour, Ecology and Reproduction in the Age of Climate Change. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GOP’s government shutdown, ABC’s inauguration plans, Social Security, Trump’s cabinet, Trump’s plan to privatize the post office, Syria’s changing political landscape, Gaza’s massive death toll, and McKinsey’s liability in Purdue Pharma’s opioid case, also touching on preparations for Trump’s authoritarianism and the centrist “No Labels” party’s struggles to not capitulate to the right. Dr. Stefania Barca, PhD, then joins, diving right into work on the broadening of “reproductive work” – a form of labor regarding social reproduction and the socializing, educational, and care work required for it – to include the need to cultivate and maintain a healthy environment for society to flourish sustainably. Stepping back, Barca unpacks the historical tension between labor and environmental movements, with the two being seen as in conflict between the interests of blue- and white-collar workers, respectively, despite that very tension being very prevalent within these specific movements themselves, expanding on that latter point by walking through the myriad strains of environmentalism – be it green capitalism, environmental justice, ecomodernism or degrowth – and how they approach concepts like consumption, labor transitions, production, and wealth inequality, with each taking on a different approach to the relationship between capitalism and the environment.  After expanding on the true alignment of the crises of care and the environment, Stefania parses through the value of understanding this reproductive work – in both social and environmental contexts – as one worthy of financial compensation, from the value it directly provides society in its immediate provisions to the central role it can play in pushing a necessary labor shift away from industries directly associated with environmental decay toward ones that can build to a sustainable future.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle the growing call for Biden to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, unpack the coalescence of the GOP around alleged islamophobe, predator, abuser, and alcoholic Pete Hegseth’s nomination, and look to history in their response to Marc Andreessen’s call for an antithesis to FDR. Jimmy Dore responds to Peter Hotez’s critique of RFK Jr. by… blaming the existence of polio on the polio vaccine, plus, your calls and IMs!

It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Kyle Kulinski, co-host of the Kyle Kulinski Show & Krystal Kyle and Friends, to round up the week in news. First, Emma runs through updates on growing famine in Gaza as winter nears, Israel’s land grab in Syria, Trump’s threat to Iran, Trump’s advisors, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Pelosi’s undermining of AOC’s Oversight committee bid, RFK’s newest vaccine objection (polio), Trump’s banking deregulation agenda, and Macron’s newest centrist PM, before watching Peter Thiel sputter through a defense of the US healthcare system and the (former) UnitedHealthcare CEO. Kyle Kulinski then joins as he reflects on Nancy Mace’s complex and intersectional relationship with the bathroom, Democrats’ willingness to capitulate to and embrace Trump’s fascist scapegoating of trans people and immigrants, and the importance of actually acknowledging your constituents’ issues in winning elections. Kyle and Emma also tackle the absurd narrative about Trump and the GOP’s right-wing populism, parsing particularly through the facade of Trump’s anti-war persona before touching on the pseudo-populism of RFK’s relationship with Big Pharma. Wrapping up, they unpack the state of “independent” media, the growing embrace of far-right lunacy as long as it comes with a billionaire’s backing, and the need for the Democratic party to look left for success.

And in the Fun Half: Emma unpacks the tension around the humanitarian crisis in the US-backed Al-Hol detention center in Syria with Owen from LA, The Letterhack previews his show with Ronald Raygun tonight, and Juliet from Portland gives Emma a lesson in AGP. The MR Crew also covers the arrest of a Lakeland, Florida woman over saying “Delay, Deny, Depose. You people are next” after being denied healthcare and Sen. Blumenthall’s Musk suckup, also talking with Jackson in Colorado about media comprehension in the US. They also watch Daniel Penny aptly thank the fact that “someone” didn’t get hurt in his killing of Jordan Neely, and touch on the TYT’s floundering attempts to pivot right, plus, your calls and IMs!

2389 -Minneapolis Policing; Fight For Public Renewables w/ Michelle S. Phelps, Gabriel Hetland

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Michelle Phelps, professor of sociology at the University of Minnesota, to discuss her recent book The Minneapolis Reckoning: Race, Violence, and the Politics of Policing in America. Then she speaks with Gabriel Hetland, associate professor of Latin American, Caribbean & Latino studies at SUNY Albany, to discuss his recent piece on the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA) published in The Nation entitled "This Solar Panel Kills Fascists." First, Emma runs through updates on Biden’s lame duck action, AOC’s bid for Dem lead on Congressional oversight, Meta’s Trump donation, Fetterman’s support for Trump’s cabinet, Manchin-Sinema hand the NLRB to Trump, Trump’s ICE reform, the Albertsons-Kroger lawsuit, LA’s new minimum wage policy, the NYT Tech Guild, and the UK’s puberty blocker ban, also watching Joy Reid and Elizabeth Warren unpack the dangers of the GOP’s attack on the CFPB. Professor Michelle Phelps then joins, diving right into the start of her research on Minneapolis’ relationship with policing at the first peak of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2016, originally wrapping up in 2019 before the murder of George Floyd – and the global (and Minneapolis-based) abolitionist movement that followed – brought this topic back to the fore of her research, as she unpacks the direct correlation between communities being at heightened risk of police violence also being the ones most at risk of the community violence said police are supposed to prevent, creating a complicated relationship between being the community most in need of public safety reform AND the community most in need of public safety systems writ large. As she walks through Minneapolis’ reaction and overwhelming abolitionist organizing effort in response to the murder of George Floyd, Professor Phelps explores the amorphous relationship between police and crime, and the relationship race and poverty have to both, which puts marginalized communities in such a tight bind when it comes to mitigating all violence, and the ultimate need to rethink where to investment to most benefit public safety. Expanding on the story in Minneapolis, Michelle and Emma unpack the evolution of the political establishment pushback to the abolitionist movement, tackling the relationship between Mayor Frye and the Minneapolis Police Department and the economic incentive of being an entertainment destination for suburbanites, before wrapping up with the ultimate sentencing of killer Cop Derek Chauvin and the minimal reciprocity it provided. Professor Gabriel Hetland then walks Emma through the genuinely incredible “New York State Build Public Renewables Act,” unpacking its plan for a green energy transition and the creation and maintenance of a robust clean energy grid bolstered by union labor, an investment in low and moderate-income workers, and an emphasis on public input and ownership. Expanding on this, Professor Hetland tackles New York’s growing problem of skyrocketing energy costs and the fundamental fact of renewable energy’s lack of profitability, wrapping up by emphasizing the importance of a shift away from private- and profit-driven energy systems.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder as they watch Jesse Watters gleefully call for the abuse of UnitedHealth CEO killer Luigi Mangione, Jake from Dallas calls in to discuss Texas education, and Tyler from Cleveland tackles divesting from Israel. They also reflect on an incredibly inspirational congressional tenure from Cori Bush and the danger of letting right-wing money invade Democratic primaries, Ben Shapiro goes to war with his audience over the Healthcare CEO killer and Bill Burr, and Andrew Ferguson’s dangerous blueprint for his FTC chairmanship comes out – and gives important insight into what “right-wing populism” actually entails. Plus, your calls and IMs!

2388 - French Government Collapses; How Society Failed Jordan Neely w/ Cole Stangler, Katie Way

It's Hump Day! Emma speaks with Cole Stangler, France-based journalist covering politics, housing, and labor, author of the book Paris Is Not Dead: Surviving Hypergentrification In The City Of Light, to discuss the recent developments in French politics after a vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Bernier. Then, she speaks with Katie Way, writer & editor at Hell Gate, to discuss the recent acquittal of Daniel Penny. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s land grab in Syria and food blockade on northern Gaza, Syria’s interim leader, Luigi Mangione’s manifesto, Trump’s cabinet nominees, the Kroger-Albertsons merger, Saudi Arabia’s FIFA World Cup, and Gottheimer’s governor chances get wrapped, also watching Matthew Miller continue to obscure US support for Israel’s unhinged imperialism with a smirk. Cole Stangler then joins, first catching us up to date on France’s unraveling government since his last appearance, with Macron following through with his refusal to name a left-wing Prime Minister despite the New Popular Front’s (NFP) electoral victory this summer, instead naming Republican Michel Barnier in September, leading to months of a floundering, incompetent administration largely held hostage to the far-right until a successful no-confidence vote against Barnier this past week, forcing Macron, once again, to name a Prime Minister. After expanding on the non-Macron-aligned relevant parties involved, with Marine Le Pen’s National Rally on the far-right and a multi-party coalition between the Socialists, Greens, Communists, and Jean-Luc Melancon’s LFI, Stangler wraps up with the ideal candidates for the Prime Ministership from the left. Katie Way then walks Emma through the evolution and eventual decision in the acquittal of Daniel Penny over his killing of Jordan Neely on the NYC subway system, with the prosecution emphasizing the diagnosis of asphyxiation as the cause of death and Penny’s lack of remorse toward and consistent attacks against Neely during interviews, while the defense’s ultimately successful argument hinged on pinning his death on drug abuse and sickle cell disease – a tact often employed by cops, as seen with the murder of George Floyd – and spinning witness accounts and the coroner’s report as the result of “political pressure.” After expanding on the ultimate decision to acquit Penny, Way and Emma step back as they unpack the greater narrative built around this case, with many elites and people on the right coming to the defense of Penny with general anti-homeless and anti-immigrant fear-mongering, zeroing in particularly on Eric Adams’ and his Administration’s use of this story to bolster his police-driven plan to solve (jail) New York City’s unhoused problem (people), as they wrap up the interview with the growing frustration around safe-blue state Democratic Parties’ failure to provide progressive alternatives to conservative fear-mongering around crime and homelessness. And in the Fun Half: Emma unpacks the major optimism from the business community about Trump’s impending administration as she watches Lina Khan’s killer appearance with Hasan before watching Scott Jennings put his fascism on full display when addressing the acquittal of killer Daniel Penny and the charging of killer Luigi Mangione. The MR Crew also tackles Ana Kasparian’s “leaving the left” and Brett Cooper’s leaving the Daily Wire, and UFC fighter Bryce Mitchell lets loose on Elon Musk, plus, your IMs!

2387 - Assad’s Regime Falls; National Tenant Union Emerging? w/ Gregory Brew, Thomas Birmingham

It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with Gregory Brew, analyst with the Eurasia Group's Energy, Climate, & Resources Team, to discuss the fluid situation in Syria now that rebels have taken control of Damascus. Then, she speaks with Thomas Birmingham, reporter and intern at The Nation based in New Haven, to discuss his recent piece entitled "In the US, Tenants Are Usually on Their Own. Can a New National Tenant Union Change That?." First, Emma runs through updates on the charging of the United Healthcare CEO killer, Pete Hegseth’s nomination, Lara Trump’s future in politics, Pete Buttigieg’s potential governor run in Michigan, Tulsi Gabbard’s nomination, Bibi Netanyahu’s corruption case, Ukraine’s defense, Democratic leadership, Boeing layoffs, and wildfires in Malibu, before touching on developing succession drama in the Murdoch family and the right-wing media’s response to the killing of United Healthcare’s CEO. Gregory Brew then joins, first providing the context of the deep domestic unpopularity of Assad’s late Russia- and Iran-backed regime, then diving deep into the filling of the vacuum in the wake of his departure, with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham – the Islamist militant rebel group that just deposed of Assad’s regime – still in control in Damascus while Kurds in the east continue to fight a Syrian National Army backed by an anti-Kurdish Turkey, all coinciding with US pressure against a potential ISIS resurgence. Next, Brew looks to the biggest winners and losers outside of Syria, with the collapse of the Assad regime dramatically decreasing Iranian and Russian influence in the region – with the former not seeming too displeased amid an already-crumbling relationship with Assad – while substantially raising the status of the likes of Israel. Thomas Birmingham then joins, jumping right into the major success of Bozeman Tenants United – the Montana city’s tenant’s union – and their role in an ongoing attempt to organize the National Tenant Union Federation, alongside tenant unions in Chicago, Kansas City Louisville, and Connecticut, with those in Kentucky and Montana providing a particularly valuable blueprint for successful progressive, working-class organizing in deep-red states. Expanding on the work Bozeman Tenants United engages in, Birmingham walks through the story of Ozaa Echo Maker as an example of how these organizing efforts work to bring marginalized and politically uninvolved people into politics, providing them a voice and showcasing genuinely democratic models of leadership, also touching on the extensive work BTU does locally, from pushing for tenant property ownership to building their electoral power and representation on city council, to defend renters’ contract rights. Wrapping up, Thomas and Emma discuss Biden’s role in pushing back against corporate landlords at the tail-end of his tenure and the importance of showcasing proper tenant power as this fight continues.

And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Team talk with Jason from DC about the fallacy of bringing a populist right out of the Trump Administration, Lindsay Graham vocalizes his support for Tulsi Gabbard, and the crew unpacks developments in the arrest United Healthcare CEO’s killer – with some help addressing the “death of a villain” narrative around this story from Ava in Miami. They also watch Ben Wikler’s appearance on the Daily Show, plus, your calls and IMs!

2386 - The Path Forward For The Left w/ John Nichols

Happy Monday! Sam speaks with John Nichols, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to discuss his recent interview with Sen. Bernie Sanders, and the paths forward he sees for the Left after the 2024 election. First, Emma runs through updates on the acquittal of Daniel Penny, the potential detaining of the United Healthcare CEO killer, the fall of Assad in Syria and the imperialist responses from Israel and the US, South Korean President Yoom, Trump’s pledge to pardon insurrectionists, and Trump’s developing cabinet, before parsing through Trump’s inhumane and unconstitutional plan to end birthright citizenship, and Democrats’ failure to prevent this threat. Then, John Nichols joins Sam as he dives right into his recent interview with Bernie Sanders, unpacking Bernie’s major takeaways from Democrats’ failure in the 2024 elections, from the need for a new way to communicate with a multi-racial, multi-ethnic working class to the imperative for Democrats to stand aside and let independent, working-class progressive candidates run without the burden of the party establishment weighing them down. After briefly expanding on the challenge of convincing the Democratic Party Brand to stop pushing the Democratic Party Brand, Nichols steps back to walk through the history of this tactic’s success on the left, playing a particularly prevalent role in bolstering FDR’s progressive coalition and the major progress they achieved. Next, John and Sam look to Bernie’s 2016 anti-oligarchy candidacy, exploring how Democrats’ failure to address that growing political inequality provided a path (twice) for Trump and the GOP (twice) to successfully stand as the party of money power and as anti-establishment, bolstered by the GOP’s messaging dominance (see: Elon Musk’s Twitter purchase), before looking deeper into the contemporary examples for Bernie’s model – namely himself and Angus King, two independents that, while outside of the party infrastructure, caucus (and vote) with Democrats. Wrapping up, Nichols and Sam look at the ongoing race for DNC chair, and the promising future of a Blue-Wall-led party – touching particularly on the success of DNC chair candidate Ben Wikler.

And in the Fun Half: Emma unpacks the potential capture of the United Healthcare CEO killer in Altoona, PA, and the wide-ranging coverage of the event, from the incensed and out-of-touch Ben Shapiro to the ever big-brained Bill Burr, with additional commentary from Joe from Illinois. Zack from Missouri unpacks the MAGA defense of Trump’s character, Brie from New York on their view of the View, and Jim Clyburn and Chip Roy come to the defense of Trump and his administration, respectively, plus, your calls and IMs!

2385 - Our Era Of Oligarchy And Government By Gangster w/ Jeet Heer

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Elon’s 6-digit spending spree for Trump, Pete Hegseth’s nomination, US healthcare, Trump’s expanding cabinet of billionaires, the blocked release of the Gaetz ethics report, job growth leading into Trump 2.0, Russia’s use of civilians for target practice, stalling Tesla sales, Israel’s most recent slaughtering of a humanitarian zone, and affirmative action in the US, before expanding on the coverage around the killing of United Healthcare’s CEO. Jeet Heer then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma dive right into the topic of Trump’s anti-establishment appeal, unpacking how his cabal of criminals – albeit largely wealthy and establishment-friendly ones – can capitalize on overwhelming disillusionment toward and rejection of US political institutions by at least providing SOME cathartic bucking of the system. Expanding on this, they parse through the particular role of the Democratic Party and its leadership, presenting Trump as an aberration from the deeply unpopular norms and establishment that guide US politics, while reiterating and centering their commitment to said establishment and norms, wrapping up with how these issues were drastically exacerbated by Joe Biden’s decision to run for reelection.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack the attempt to spin Pete Hegseth as the “new” Donald Trump, tackle the gerontocratic decline of the Democratic Party, and watch Bill Clinton shame Palestinians for not happily embracing Israeli expansion. Hasan goes tweed, Russell Brand takes pity on the women he’s exploited, and Matt Walsh gets wildly outshined by a 12-year-old trans girl speaking to the masses outside of the Supreme Court. Thomas from Sacramento asks about combatting insane anti-trans talking points, plus, your calls and IMs!
