Patreon Flashback — Ep. #58: 2011's Summer of Punk

It's December, and you know what that means: Since Kris and David took the week off, we're bringing you the annual holiday selection of a past Patreon deep dive show a few weeks early. This time, we're bringing you our July 2021 show looking at 2011's "Summer of Punk" in WWE, which ended up being surprisingly topical since news of Punk going to AEW broke around when the show came out. For more than eight years' worth of shows like this, you need to sign up for our Patreon at Patreon.com/BetwenTheSheets.

    ---

We’re back to look at something that we knew we couldn’t do justice to on a regular show: 2011’s Summer of Punk storyline. Starting with the announcement that CM Punk’s contract was up  soon and the “pipe bomb” promo, and going through the week that the storyline completely fell apart when Punk returned after just one week off of TV, this is an in-depth look at a wild period in recent wrestling history. Topics include:

    • The angle’s effects (or lack thereof) on various business metrics.
    • Punk calling an Australian heckler a “homo” and the resulting fallout.
    • The WWE creative team completely botching trying to keep John Cena from looking like an asshole.
    • Just how different the Nielsen ratings for Raw and its competition looked ten years ago.
    • Punk’s interviews with G.Q. and Bill Simmons.
    • Alberto del Rio repeatedly losing out on promised world title reigns.

    ...and much more. Enjoy!

2024 WON HOF Results UK Historians Roundtable

David is joined by British wrestling historians Allan Blackstock (@allan_cheapshot), Keith Harris (@glasgowkjh), Tony Earnshaw (@RealErnestARS), and Bradley Craig (@BradleyCraigABZ) to talk about the 2024 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame results...sort of. Allan wanted to do a roundtable and didn't have anyone to record/host it, so David volunteered. It came up on short notice, so he dips in and out while multitasking with Allan leading the panel. We start with a deep dive into the "rest of the world" results before delving into the American categories and beyond, including a fascinating discussion of where everyone stands on Johnny Saint's induction. Enjoy!

    Ep. #482: October 30-November 5, 2003 with Robert O'Connor

Kris and David are joined by Robert O'Connor (@ghostofquinones) to discuss the week that was October 30-November 5, 2003. Topics of discussion include:

    • Teddy Hart going completely nuts at the 11/1 Ring of Honor show in Elizabeth, NJ and taking over the wrestling internet with his antics. We talk about the show itself — which gets forgotten because of Teddy and the aftermath, despite some great matches — plus all of the fallout, including Teddy’s “open letter” apology and CM Punk burying Teddy on his LiveJournal blog.
    • A wacky NWA-TNA PPV featuring the announcement of Lex Luger coming in, Raven getting some "revenge" on Jim Mitchell, and lots more TNA goodness.
    • Hiroyoshi Tenzan finally winning the IWGP Heavyweight Title in New Japan on a weird show in Yokohama.
    • NOAH's 11/1 Budokan show, featuring Shiro Koshinaka making his surprise debut and Kenta Kobashi defending the GHC World Heavyweight Title against Yoshinari Ogawa.
    • Michinoku Pro’s 10th anniversary show featuring Bob Sapp.
    • Randy Savage's rap album flopping hard.
    • Two completely insane segments featuring Vince McMahon and Paul Heyman on SmackDown.
    • WWE calling Matt Morgan up from OVW at a time where way too many big guys were called up at once and devalued each other as a result.
    • Raw is Degrassi, with the key Canadian talent showing off their ACTING~! skills.

That's just a taste of the greatness on this show, and of course O'Connor delivers the content as always, so LISTEN NOW!!
