Here’s bunch of tunes I purchased on Beatport and then mixed immediately last night.

A friend, Eva, sent me a clip of Funky Green Dogs’ classic ‘Reach For Me’ via WhatsApp. I went to play it only realised I didn’t have it... So, off to Beatport, where, of course, I was distracted by new releases too.

Part two of the story is much more mundane. We were supposed to be hosting a Christmas party for 70 people last night but had to cancel the day before because I did my back in. Typical. Stuck at home feeling grouchy, Eva’s intervention and a little music shopping inspired me to reach for the headphones.

This session is the result, mixed live in one take, with ‘Reach For Me’ at the heart of it. I only made one small edit to shorten Rhythm Masters’ take on ‘Been A Long Time’ - their version being a bit too dark compared to the other grooves on offer here. Everything else is disco and funky house with a few remixes of familiar faves thrown in the shopping bag for good measure.

I don’t know anything about the ‘Jefferson’ brand of cassette tapes. The basic design makes me think they’re at the discount end of the audio spectrum, but the retro font and 70s vibe seems fitting for this session.

Pete gave me a handful of old tapes from circa 1991 when our gang used to frequent The No 1 Club in Manchester. Sadly I missed out on those No 1 days, arriving in Manc just after, but I still have lots of the tunes.

My task was to recreate these hissy, crappy tapes for our friend Lisa's 50th birthday. There were a lot of tunes I could not get hold of, despite Shazamming and Googling lyrics, but this session covers all the tracks I could get together, in the order they were originally mixed by Jake and Tim on those tapes.

It’s been a fun project, requiring me to dig a little deeper than my usual retro sets and has given a fresh airing to tracks I don’t often play that much. I had to re-created a couple of mash ups and I also replicated the spooky, Pink Floyd-sampling intro from one of Jake's mixes.

It seems that even six months off work doesn’t give me enough of a window to fill the gaping abyss left by mixes waiting to be sorted. Enough gap-filling, time for something contemporary. This update is built solely from 2015 tunes, mostly from August / September, and so predominantly tracks I’ve been caning whilst traveling. It’s probably as close as you’ll get to I’d be playing out right now if I hadn’t officially hung up my headphones a few years back.

It’s an upfront house session, mainly influenced by Jane and Heath as we were staying with them in Melbourne when I sorted the tracklist. I have fond memories being driven around while banging through their awesome tech and deep house playlists.

Seeing as I have a bit of spare time on my hands (it’s raining here in Fiji), I’ve edited the feck out of this session. As a result it moves along pretty quickly. I don’t usually edit this heavily - it can makes mixes feel a bit too much like a Ministry compilation - but on reflection I quite like the results when verses, or over-lengthy breakdowns, are cut. It keeps the vibe consistent and continuous. And given that my last mix was nearly three hours long (who’s going to listen all the way through that?) this means I can squeeze nineteen tracks into a CD-friendly 80 minutes. I haven’t edited like this since Minidisc days.

Stand-out tracks: Dusky’s Skin Deep is my tune of the summer. The Hayden James opener is from the start of the year but is an earworm I can’t dislodge. It’s great to see Full Intention back on form this year, ditto Roisin Murphy. There’s the usual re-rubs of familiar classics in the mix and even a junglist breakbeak twist on Jamie XX’s Loud Places before we end with my favourite remix of Holding On, the first outing from Disclosure’s second album.

I have never owned or used a Yashima cassette tape but it seemed fitting given we’ve been through japan recently buying records. It has UFO in its name. It’s ‘high energy’ and ‘ultra dynamic’. What more do you need?

In June 2015, Lithuanian DJ/producer, Marijus Adomaitis, AKA Ten Walls or Mario Basanov, published a particularly vile Facebook post about gay people. Whilst I believe everyone has the right to free speech, this was a pre-determined concrete view that rubs against the origins of club culture, a culture he milks and profits from for a living.

His ill-informed, niave statements led to much discontent being voiced in music and social media. He was rightly pulled from many festival performances but it’s too early to tell how much it has hurt his career. He will probably soon pop under a new producer pseudonym anyway.

The trouble is, I loved his work under the ‘Mario Basanov’ monica. I actively sought out and bought the tunes and he’s had more than a fair share of airtime in our gay household. Now, I find it difficult to separate the man from the music, In 2015, three/four years after release, his bottom-heavy, dreamy deep house signature has been mimicked and replicated, dating it quickly. Maybe that’s why he started releasing under ‘Ten Walls’??

Whatever, it’s time to draw a line under these great tunes, and ‘finish off Masanov’. I had a number of these future disco playlists bubbling away between 2010-2012. This session pulls together favourites from that era, and clocking in at over two and a half hours, it’s a pretty chunky one.

To dial-up the pink and stamp some queer over his music, we open with a snatch from John Waters’ 1969 movie, Mondo Trasho. Samples of this were also recently used on Hercules & Love Affair’s 2014 album track, ’43 To Freedom’. Enjoy!

Tunes from 2010-2012, pooled from various playlists, re-listed at InDa Hotel, Varkala, mixed & chaptered in Siem Reap, Cambodia, 25-27th July 2015. “Unbespielt” is German for “unrecorded” and it appears on the beautifully retro cassette tape artwork fronting this mix. The design is a retro as Adomaitis’ views, and ‘unrecording’ is what I’d like to do to his catalogue now this mix is complete. Haha !

Ferrocolor HD - InDeep Nov 2013 (InDa Sessions 1)

It's May 2015 and I'm currently in India, seven weeks into a six month sabbatical. After a month of traveling and site seeing we’ve landed in Varkala, Kerala. It's low season at this cliff-top beach town and so the place is quiet, thanks to the forthcoming monsoon. We checked into InDa Hotel for three days and have been here for three weeks. Our first week was so rainy that locals were suggesting the monsoon had come early. What better opportunity to kick back and catch up on some mix playlists that have been sitting untouched for years.

Given the rain and grey skies, I homed-in on something reflective to begin: a selection of deep house grooves originally compiled in November 2013. But this isn't miserable, cold, London rain. It’s hot, humid and thundering. In fact, the steamy weather you hear in the mix was recorded from the terrace of our bungalow here at InDa. These tunes may be two years old, but they blend perfectly today.

Tracks of note include Wicked Games. Complete with Jamie XX-style steel pan climax, it transcends the Chris Isaak-crooned 80s original, of which I was never a fan. The Bob Moses track, All I Want, also takes a brilliant diversion towards the end when the bassline kicks in. I first stumbled on All I Want via Ben Watt’s BBC 6Music show. Mario Basanov works his magic on Crazy P’s Changes before we get a dawn glimpse of Cocktail Skies. Must be a shepherd’s warning. Enjoy!

‘AGFA Ferrocolor HD’ is a German-made blank cassette tape, first produced in 1982. As Type 1 ‘Normal’ bias tape from a budget brand it was quite popular through the decade as a cheaper alternative to the likes of TDK-D. 

Pyral Maxima - InDisco Rubs Summer 2013 (InDa Sessions 2)

Another InDa session. Ten days later and the sunshine is back. Let’s celebrate by surrendering to the power of DISCO!

This mix builds on a playlist of disco-tinged tracks from summer 2013. Funky rhythm guitars, lush strings, SalSoul samples, 70s bass grooves, diva vocal hooks… Sometimes as straight covers or re-edits, at other points looped and twisted, this is where house pays homage to the days of Studio 54 and latter 80s grooves.

Tracks under the pin-spots? Well, there are two very similar tracks that sample the same section from a tune by Luther Vandross’ old band, Change. I didn’t notice the similarity until I came to Chapter the podcast file - can you spot them? Change also provide the backbone of No Dilemma, joined by Eryka Badu. Whitney is cut up to great effect on Only Child’s Down Fever - a tune I partied to with the EE gang at Glastonbury last year. Enjoy!

Here’s a little early xmas present for you. I turned 40 this year and in the summer we partied like it was my 21st. We hosted a daytime/night time enchanted woodland-themed party. Food and face painting in the daytime for those with kids, fireworks and raving into the night for those without. See the original invite here.

Blessed with awesome weather, we were in the garden as well as indoors. The last of the revelers left around 9am. The place looked like a bomb site the following day and, as you can imagine, we weren’t very popular with the neighbours afterwards. Probably one Matt and my best parties, it was the perfect way to celebrate kicking 40.

And we raised £2000 for Shelter, so a massive thank you to everyone who donated.

Coop DJ’d in the garden after dark, leading up to the fireworks, then Niall picked up the reigns indoors. I played for a couple of hours at midnight before Matt took up through til dawn.

I recorded my set, and that’s what you’ll find here. Being about 9 hours into the party I was a little worse for wear, so don’t any expect top draw mixing skills! (I wasn’t planning on posting it for this reason but it’s party season once again now so I’m throwing caution to the wind.)

The first half hour features some deep house and nu disco grooves before launching into old skool Strangeways Manchester 90s classics. I didn’t set out to play a classics set that night. In fact, I’d been running around so much in the days leading up the the party that I hadn’t really had time to plan a set. In my mind I was going to play chunky funky house but it was so good to see so many old Manchester faces, the classics just kept coming.

I owe a massive thanks to the many people who helped out on the day. Sophie and Brent and Precious who helped set everything up - especially Brent for managing the bar and delivering his Woodland Squirrel cocktail, Silly Millie for kids entertainment, Anna Bella, and later Jodie, for out of this world make up and face painting, Communique for donating mirrorballs and beer, Ted for the woodland sound effects in the bathroom, Savage Salads for the food, Coop and Niall for DJing, Mum and Dad for sorting the table decorations and garden lighting, Lynne for the pep talks... and of course Matt for being ‘party organiser’s widow’ for a few months and making everything look so awesome. Here’s a selection of new tunes, mostly snaffled this year. Possibly a little darker than usual but deep n funky as ever. Highlights include Rachel Row’s Follow The Step, which was massive for me over Christmas... Disclosure team up with AlunaGeorge and prove they are still the men-of-the-moment... and FCL’s It’s You finally gets a release on Defected after last summer’s first batch of 12”s have been selling for hundreds of ££s on Discogs - expect a pack of remixes soon, in the meantime I have paired it with the stabbing B-line of LouLou’s Hum Hum. It kinda works, you be the judge. We polish off the session with an old classic from 1992: La Tour’s Blue first appeared in the movie Basic Instinct, don’t you know.

It’s been a long time / I shouldn’t have left you / without a dope beat to step to...

I can’t believe it’s two and a half years since my last post. I have over 20 playlists of tunes ready to be mixed, but the weight of the task led to a sort of paralysis... I get a bunch of tunes ready but never get the time to blend them. Then more tunes come along, or ones I have chosen wear out a little, so the tracklist loses its shine... then three weeks pass and it seems even more like yesterday’s news.

So, fast-forward to today and I find myself sorting music for a party. Time to clear this DJ constipation with eight awesome tracks mixed live, perfect for slamming on if you’re getting ready to go out over the festive season.

First up, The blissful Benediction. This summer anthem’s been rolling around my head non-stop for the past month. I wake up and go to sleep with ‘keep on riding on and on’ as my soundtrack. Frank B gives us a phat old skool re-take of the classic ‘Chain Of Fools’ - I love the fact he cut out the chorus, and just you wait for the bass drop.

The Jessie Ware and TEED tracks are festival favourites but the crescendo is definitely the Maxxi Soundsystem transformation of a classic disco Scandal track, with a bassline to end all basslines.

Oh, and there’s an Adele song. LOL.

45 minutes. Just enough to fill up one side of a old C-90 tape. Enjoy!
