Here’s episode 39 with Frankly Fictitious!

The guys in Frankly Fictitious took time out of their busy schedule last week to hang out at the All Independent Reno back-shack. Frankly Fictitious have been together for more than five years, consisting of band mates Kaden “USDA Approved” Barmore (Vocals / Guitar), Jason “Garlic Fingers” VanHavel (Bass) and Jonathan “Danger” Louis (Drums). Although they have had many different musicians as part of this project over the years, they have “cut the fat” and honed their craft, releasing their self described “Hyper-Rock” self-titled album last year recorded at Dog Water Studios. We talked about their Spinal Tap-esque stories while performing, narrowly escaping drum symbol amputation, and we learned how to “write a rock song”.

Here’s episode 38 with The Grimtones!

The Grimtones stopped by the All Independent Reno back-shack last week to talk about how they first got together, the new album they’re currently working on at Dogwater Studios and a cool story about the times they met The Kills at the Fox Theater in Oakland. Michelle Belle (Guitars, Vocals, Keys, Bass, Mandolin, Little Tambourine) and Carter Stallon (Drums, Vocals, Bass, Harmonica, Guitar, Ukelele, Slide Whistle) had been a duo until they found bass player Nic Taro (bass, vocals) during summer 2017.

I had first heard of The Grimtones when they agreed to play the Swigsmas show at Headquarters Reno during winter 2017. After having heard their latest single released 12-8-17, Last Words (Get Up and Move) a few weeks before the show on 100.1 The X Locals Only, I was thrilled to have them play a show with my band SWIGS. Referring to their musical talent, during their performance at Headquarters, Alex Alcanter from Prince Robot leaned over to me and asked “What are we even doing?!”. The Grimtones have proven to be a must see Reno band and I’m really looking forward to their next release.

Here’s episode 37 with Prince Robot!

Prince Robot stopped by the All Independent Reno back-shack last week to talk about a variety of subjects including band spirit animals, Pogs (remember Pogs?) and music that influenced their new album Post-Apocalyptic Dancehall Blues. Prince Robot band mates Lynne Carpenter (vocals), Alex Alcantar (Guitar) and Jeff King (Drums), will be performing for their CD release party show at 40 Mile Saloon Jan. 20th 2018. Supporting Prince Robot will be local favorites Pink Awful and Corner Store.

The members of Prince Robot describe themselves as junk rockers. They like to make as much racket as they can with as few people as possible. Speed is key, too. According to King, he doesn’t ever play slow songs because it makes him uncomfortable. The band pulls its inspiration from a range of influences including ’50s surf rock and punk—and Bikini Kill front woman Kathleen Hanna’s ability to scream in key, according to Carpenter.

Here’s episode 36 with The Soft White Sixties!

The Soft White Sixties are an awesome five piece rock ‘n’ roll / soul group, originally from San Francisco, they have since moved out to LA. They were on tour with Dan Luke and the Raid from Bowling Green Kentucky performing at The Saint in Reno. We got a chance to talk to them about recording in LA, traveling the country and grubbing on reindeer soup and hot chicken in Nashville.

Here’s a little info that I lifted from their bio on their site thesoftwhitesixties.com:

For the Sixties, who’d released their debut full-length album, Get Right in 2014, capturing a certain vibe and a particular mood for their next batch of recordings was essential. The band always took an ‘all hands on deck’ approach to writing, but in the past they chiseled their song arrangements on stage without a clear sense of direction for the final result. For the next album the musical collective — which includes bassist Ryan Noble and drummer Joey Bustos — made a conscious decision to apply a forward-thinking kind of approach, continually asking the question ‘what kind of band do we want to be?’ To further ensure an open-book approach to the sessions, the band enlisted producer/mixer Matt Linesch (Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, Dave Mason), working with him at United Recording in Los Angeles. “Matt was almost like a fifth member, at times,” Eisenberg says. “He embraced our new approach, while really stressing the importance of the music not being perfect. It’s a human form of expression.”

Here’s episode 35 with Charlie Parr from Duluth Minnesota!

Charlie Parr stopped into Reno while on tour a few months back at the Peppermill performing songs from his vast repertoire of music including new songs from his latest record entitled Dog. We had a great conversation about his upbringing in Austin MN, being inspired by his parents records, his collaborations with Gaelynn Lee as well as Alan Sparhawk of the band Low and how his style of learning and playing guitar broke the rules of the standard way of playing the instrument.

Charlie Parr has been traveling around singing his songs ever since leaving Austin Minnesota in the 1980’s in search of Spider John Koerner, whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar one Sunday night. The experience changed his life, made him more or less unemployable, and brings us to now: 13 recordings, 250 shows a year or more, 200,000 miles on a well broke in Kia, and a nasty fear of heights. Resonator fueled folk songs from Duluth Minnesota.

Here’s episode 34 with The Brankas!

The Brankas are a duo from San Francisco, originally formed in Oakland in 2011, they consist of members Taylor McElroy and Theo Slavin. I first met Theo and Taylor selling their merch after I saw them play a kick ass live set at Gremfest ’17, an awesome local Reno festival that hosts a line-up of rad rock ‘n’ roll bands from Reno and the Bay area.

The Brankas stopped by the All Independent Reno “back-shack” earlier this year before they performed at The Holland Project in Reno on May 28th with Get Well Soon Band and Family Sedan. We had a few beers, talked about their latest record,  how they got into playing music and which band mate spends the most time playing video games. These guys were really fun to hang out with so I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we had fun making it!

Here’s episode 33 with Gremfest ’17 coverage!

Gremfest started as a house show with friends which has since turned into the most raddest, funnest and most epic house party festival that I’ve ever attended.

Spencer Kilpatrick and his girlfriend decided one day to have bands play for his birthday. It has since grown into a melding of Reno and Bay Area bands getting together, playing music and drinking beer with fellow music fans who share a love of rock ‘n’ roll and good times.

Spencer asked me to show up to the festival to record some interviews with the bands playing and to provide coverage of Gremfest ’17. I carried a handheld recorder with me in one hand, beer in the other, and let the tape roll. What was recorded is pure fun!

Tacocat is an American punk rock quartet from Seattle, Washington on Hardly Art records. They founded in 2007 and consist of band mates Emily Nokes, Bree McKenna, Lelah Maupin, and Eric Randall.

Tacocat recently performed at the Holland Project in support of their record Lost Time with Reno locals Okay Urge and Snack. We had a great time talking about their favorite podcasts, their experience at Coachella where they performed this year, and we find out which band mates are dog lovers, cat lovers or both! I had the pleasure to talk to Ryan Chrys and Bradley Weaver from The Rough Cuts before they performed at The Saint in Reno. They were coming through town from Denver CO in support of their latest record Shovel Full Of Coal. The opening band at The Saint were Everyday Outlaw from Truckee, CA. Check ’em out!

Here’s a little info about Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts from their site:

Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts bring forth new energy to country music fans who love the heroes and outlaws of old. Influenced by the songs and personalities of legends like Waylon, Willie and Johnny Cash, they drive their sound with blazing guitars, gritty lap steel and a rock n roll attitude. “Modern Outlaw Country” is a term the band uses to describe their music.

Recent highlights include being direct support for Blackberry Smoke,  The Marshall Tucker Band, Shakey Graves, Junior Brown, Cody Canada & The Departed, Cash’d Out, The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band and more. The band toured extensively in 2015 and 2016 in support of their sophomore album, “Up From The North.” Highlights of the touring include the 75th annual Sturgis Rally where Gilby Clarke, formerly of Guns n Roses, performed on stage with the band, and later at the Ogden Theatre in Denver where Billy Nershi of The String Cheese Incident performed on stage with the band.

Here’s episode 30 with Chris Staples!

Chris Staples played a solo performance on his living room show tour with Undertow Music Collective at 7th Street Station recently in Reno. We talked about his recording / writing process, his musical roots growing up in Florida, then moving on to creating his own sound in Seattle and releasing his music with Barsuk Records.

Here’s a little info from his bio written by Kathleen Tarrant:

“Starting in his hometown in Florida, all the way to the Pacific Northwest, Staples has built a career writing songs in their most immediate form – a moment happens, and to process it he lets a thought or feeling guide the song into being. This mentality has carried him from his first solo record, Panama (2001) to American Soft, and with each album Staples’ core strengths have grown into a subtle brilliance – innate melody, intense allegory, and the deceptive sinew behind songs that could easily be dismissed as merely quiet.”

“Balancing his music with day jobs in construction and carpentry, and playing at times in other people’s bands, Staples struggled to focus the many parts of his creative life, but didn’t have the capacity to make a change.  His life was split between work, split between his home in Seattle and his roots in Florida, where he had always gone to write and record his albums.”
