The concept of the prog artist going pop is so well-known that it's almost a cliche. We still love you, Phil Collins! But what about the inverse? What happens when our favorite pop bands and artists get the "prog bug" and go off the deep end? This is a concept that almost nobody talks about but greatly interests us here at ATTT HQ. It doesn't always work, but when Pop Goes Prog and it does work, the results can be an artist-or-band-career-defining moment. Thankfully we have access to a couple of mensches that know their pop and know their prog. What is power pop? The Who's Pete Townshend coined the term in a May 1967 interview promoting their latest single "Pictures of Lily". He said: "Power pop is what we play—what the Small Faces used to play, and the kind of pop the Beach Boys played in the days of 'Fun, Fun, Fun' which I preferred." So take one part Moptop Beatles melodies and harmonies, add in the powerful punch of The Who and The Kinks , mix in some great songs about unrequited love and voila, power pop is born. Despite the persistent pattern of great power pop bands being criminally under-loved, this hearty genre has had a long shelf life and still gets love to this day. Brent Stranathan and Jeremy Levy of the great power pop band Near Beer join to help ATTT scratch the surface of this beloved genre.
