Our man Fearful just wrapped up his China tour after a couple of weeks on the road with the Mist crew and we thought we’d bring you a taste of what these guys are doing in the form of this wicked DnB mix from Cvalda. Fearful caught up with Cvalda following the tour to talk about events and the future of Mist. You can check out the full interview here: https://goo.gl/X7mTwv Q: You’ve been running the ‘Mist’ club nights in China for around 2 years now. Tell us a bit more about how you got into DnB and what made you decide to put on your own events? “Yes, this November Mist will be 2 year old! It's really a shame that I wasn't really into this magic genre during the 90s (In China during the 90s the whole country was like it just awoke from a long dream, government started to develop economic, ppl started to explore the outside world, they want new music from west but could only see a very small part of it). I started with abstract hip-hop/downtempo/breakbeat etc. Around 2004, a German guy started to host DnB events in my city Chengdu. That was my first experience of DnB party. I loved it and I kept those feelings in my heart for a long time, so when I decided to produce music in 2009, I started to make some DnB tracks. A year after I became a DnB DJ. About 3 years ago I found Homemade Weaponry sessions on Soundcloud randomly, I've been deeply touched by this kind of DnB and it's exactly what I'm looking for. After that I changed my style to minimal/experimental DnB and never went back. I was really lucky to have met Homemade Weapons himself during my vacation to New York last summer and earlier this year I brought this man who changed my music life to China and had an amazing tour with him. I co-founded Chengdu's first underground club in 2006, and started to promote events since then, but the club closed down after 7 months coz the scene wasn't ready at that time. Hosting my own events was an idea in my mind for quite a long time, but I knew it would be a crazy stressful job so I didn't really do it, just helped friends to get gigs in Chengdu from time to time. 2 years ago Chris Dexta told me Arkaik will move to China soon. I really want more ppl in China to know this brilliant producer and this kind of DnB, so I founded MIST and made Arkaik's China tour happen.” Q: You’ve been playing a few of your own productions during the tour, do you have plans to release them with any labels or even set up your own in the future? “Some of them are released by a local label called Mintone Records which is mostly focus on jazzy hip-hop right now, I joined the crew when I started producing in 2009 but it's not a DnB label so I only released some DnB remixes for some of their artists. As far as I know there's no label focus on releasing DnB tracks in China at the moment. I want MIST to be the first one for sure but for now I'm running the brand by myself so time is a problem. If I'm ready with a finished an EP, I'll find a way to release it, haha.” Q: Finally, can you tell us what you have planned for the future of ‘Mist’? “This year we have one event with Fre4knc and a tour for Gremlinz to do. MIST will continue the workshop project - MistCamp/Beatmakers to help more local producers, hopefully we can release some DnB EP or a compilation in the future. To celebrate, we’ve got a mix from M-Zine & Scepticz thats so full of Dubs that we haven’t been able to include a tracklist. Q: Hey guys, how’s it going? We're hyped to have you in the mix for us this month, it seems you've been busy in the studio lately. You've got a heap of tunes forthcoming, what can you tell us about those? Are there any tracks you're particularly proud of? “Easy guys, all’s going well thank you, big up for having us do the podcast this month ! There’s a couple of tunes forthcoming over the next couple of months Yes! We’ve got a shared 12” with DLR that has just come out today actually (1st of July), which we’re both very proud of. There’s an EP wrapped up for Blendits Audio (Rotterdam), an EP for Dispatch Recordings that has been coming together nicely, plus a tune on their scheduled VA Album (DIS100). Also we just had a tune released on Different Music for their GiraffeDay Charity LP, which we’re really glad to have been a part off, be sure to check that out if you haven’t already ;-)” Q: We're loving the collaboration with DLR on Warm Communications. The track has an amazing vibe and it’s a bit different from what we're used to hearing from you. How was it working with him? “Working with Jay was quite sick, he showed us around Bristol a bit, his workflow is very much inspiring, basically we brought some sample vibes along with us, got one of his beats in and the tune quite fluently came together, that’s what’s so exciting for us about this collaboration, the natural progression behind it. Furthermore Jay is one of the nicest and safest dudes we’ve met!” Q: So how do things normally work in the studio between you two? Are there any parts of production either of you like best? “Things usually start of with just a beat or a main idea of what we want to make, making sure the drums are right is key to making a tune, so we’ll spend a lot of time going back and forth between other tunes and comparing the drums to them first, if those are balanced out nicely, the rest quickly follows and tends to sit nicely with the backbone of the tune. Joeri is the man behind the engineering of the tunes, Tom provides some nice vibes and pads to compliment that.” Q: If you guys could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why? “We would have to say Mikal and/or Mako, they are really onto some vibes at the moment, and their mixdowns just sound so fat each and every time, and their music is just so on point!” Q: So finally, what can we expect from your podcast? There’s lots of new music in there that we haven't heard before. Jessie released his debut single with our friends over at Halogen Music this October, two dance-floor orientated tracks which have gained the support of artists such as Om Unit and Hyroglifics. His collaboration with Crypticz, titled 'Downfall' displays the darker side of his production, with growling bass and relentless snares whilst the flip side 'Twelve Miles' possesses a much more subtle, highly infectious groove, complimented by ridiculously tight percussion and delayed vocal and chord stabs. J.Nomad's podcast features a well selected collection of Footwork and Jungle from the usual suspects such as Om Unit and Machinedrum, alongside some less obvious choices and influences. Over a year ago now, we had Arkaik in the mix for us. His mix was packed full of dubs, including many from the minimal wizard himself, but amongst them all the name Xanadu stood out. His track Ventricle turned many heads last year and word soon spread about his forthcoming album on Dom and Roland Productions, which came out in January earlier this year. The album was well received and had a number of stand out tracks, each with a unique, raw energy which is perfectly demonstrated in his track 'The Void' which, as Xanadu states in his interview with Lindsay at In:Reach, is "made out of lots of planks of wood being hit really hard."
