XOXOJK is a show about real stuff, funny stuff, good stuff and all the stuff in between from the eyes and mouths of Kate O'Reilly (typically the 'XOXO') and Jenn Schaal (more often than not the 'JK'). Sometimes the roles are switched but you'll always get the truth from these two thoughtful and smart-mouthed ladies.
Join us on an emotional roller-coaster today as we talk about life post-election. How can we use our bodies and words for good? We lived through an election where being less than was accepted as normal and now we have to stand up and fight against it. We talk about preparing ourselves to stand up for those in our communities who deserve better, the inauguration and the ‘star power’ the President was able to bring in (newsflash: none) and most importantly, we talk about getting your IUD before it’s potentially no longer covered. Life in 45s presidency is no walk in the park!

Guess who’s back? Back again? Not Slim Shady — it’s Kate & Jenn! Join us as we discuss whether 90210 holds up to today (spoiler: it doesn’t, but Jenn may have chosen her college thanks to Brenda), We also chat about relationships: being able to be our whole selves, couples costumes that include a face full of paint and – wait for it – pooping in Mexico. Speaking of poop: have you heard of the UPS package-stealer revenge tactic of pooping in a box? Kate thinks it seems like a lot of work. We wrap up the episode talking about mental and physical health. It feels good to be back! Thanks for listening. Enjoy.
Catch-ups!
We are thrilled to come at you this week with our guest co-host and librarian extraordinaire, Ashley Krohn. To make life even more exciting, Mo Perry joins us as our special guest. Mo is a local writer and actress who you can find performing at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis right now in The Royal Family until March 19. We also chat about how pets (specifically dogs in this case) can be lifesavers, co-parenting, or as we love to call – being a “sparent.” We wrap up the segment talking about the #resistance movement that is happening across our nation right now in light of the recent election. Enjoy!

We were ridiculously fortunate to have the amazingly talented and incredibly funny Lauren Anderson join us this week! Get ready to give your face muscles a good workout from all the laughter. We tackled how amazing our bodies are and the importance of thanking these incredible vessels of ours, opening up and being vulnerable through blog posts and the internet, rising above body shaming, and lessons learned from eating Taco Bell in your car. In the Taco Bell parking lot. Hold onto your wigs and keys – time for some serious real talk.

We’re baaaaaack! So much to catch up on: high school reunions, awesome concerts (one of which seemed to open up a portal to ex-boyfriend-ville–hello from the other side, indeed), milestone birthdays, fitness mania and more. Settle in with Kate and Jenn and let the good times roll. Good to be back in your earbuds, friends. You’re the best.

Hear ye, hear ye, this week we sit down with Ashley Krohn, redhead, fancy skirt person, reader, movie buff, dog mama, and best librarian in the world–and her tiny Still-Kickin-apparel-wearing dog Hawk. We get into a lot of real talk this week on topics ranging from being a survivor of sexual assault to depression to critical life-hacks like emotional support nails. Also, we kick around some fancy cinematic terms guaranteed to make you sound like a film school graduate after your next movie date. Also also, boobs and poop, natch. What’s not to love?

This week we sit down with the force of nature that is Athena Pelton–photographer, artist, writer, whiskeyer, motorcycle rider, and badass do-it-aller. When Kate opened her mailbox a year ago to find that Athena had sent her a hand-lettered rendering of her Twitter bio (“Kindness or GTFO”), grateful sobbing ensued and a beautiful internet friendship was born. This is the first time Jenn and Kate get to meet Athena IRL, and it’s everything we always knew it would be. In this episode, we dive into all the ways life changes after you’re 30: you give fewer fucks, you figure out who you are, and you suddenly care way more about free parking. So many preach-hand-emoji moments here, y’all. Get ready to love Athena as much as we do.

HEY PARTY PEOPLE! This week we welcome the all-around amazing, fantastic Amanda Costello – a content strategist, speaker, and tabletop gamer who loves higher-ed. One of our favorite things about Amanda is that she loves filling out forms because it’s like taking a test where she knows all the answers. Brillz. AND, Amanda also happens to be a new Mom to the little nugget, Wes. Join us as she shares her hilarious experiences and insights into this new world and what that means for her moving forward, lunch meat and all.
Hey hey, Team XOXOJK. We’re back and both went to see Beyoncé and are without proper words but we manage to round up a few for you. Kate took a much needed mini break to NYC for her birthday. She visited Blue Hill, Upright Citizens Brigade, Barney’s, Mario Badescu, and lots of amazing neighborhood brunch spots, which you can eat until 5PM in New York. So civilized! We round out the episode discussing how to welcome in positive energy and practicing empathy. Learning to do so makes all of the difference! Enjoy. You’re the best.

Why does anyone still have a funny ringtone? It's like a t-shirt you drunk bought on a boardwalk that we can hear.

It’s been a big few weeks for music lovers. Minneapolis had to say goodbye to arguably its biggest cultural icon with Prince’s passing, and the regional grief is still thick and raw. But then there’s Queen Bey in that yellow dress, smashing up car windows, easing our pain and making us feel invincible. (We pretty much haven’t stopped listening to Lemonade since it dropped.) Jenn has thoughts on what it means to recognize when something isn’t “for you,” culturally speaking, and how you can go ahead and love it anyway, and Kate waxes rhapsodic on how Bey has harnessed her power, vulnerability and gusto to empower a whole generation of women. So, RIP Prince, and long live Lemonade. These are the chapters and cycles of grief and redemption. Middle fingers up.

So excited to share this week’s episode, featuring the one and only Nora McInerny Purmort (a.k.a. @NoraBorealis), founder of the non-profit Still Kickin, author of the new book It’s Okay to Laugh (Crying is Cool Too), mother to precocious pooper Ralph, and all around amazing human. We talk tragedy porn and how it lets us try on the grief that ultimately awaits us all, traveling with a three-year-old, the thrill of making something as real as an honest-to-God BOOK, the joys of therapy, and how public speaking is awesome–once it’s over. Stick a dog in your shirt and some earbuds in your head, friend. We’re dishing up a lot of realness here. xoxo
