Review Reaction: Peter Criss Out Of Control Sounds Review from 1980

Episode 604. This week we read and react to a 1980 Sounds review of Peter Criss’ solo album Out Of Control. But… as we discuss the review and what happened , or why nothing happened, to the album and Peter Mark reveals and shares some documents from Peter’s team talking about playing live. What solo songs would Peter play live and what KISS songs would Peter play live… VERY interesting, but brings up more questions.

What Is Heavy Metal? In 1981 Are Styx, Toto, Pat Benatar, REO Speedwagon Heavy Metal?

Episode 603. This week we discuss a post in the Three Sides of the Coin Facebook Group

The post is a Heavy Metal chart from Sounds magazine, May 9, 1981. Boy did it open a can of worms… so much debate about bands on this list not being heavy metal. Well, what is heavy metal? Heavy metal in the 70s and early 80s was a lot different than heavy metal today.

“Kiss doing Frank Zappa doing Kiss” New Music Express Rock And Roll Over Review from 1977

    Episode 602.

    NME January 15, 1977

    KISS Rock And Roll Over

    (Casablanca Import)

MUCH, MUCH against my better nature I must admit to having had quite a laugh listening to this one. Kiss however are pushing themselves into amusingly ghastly quarters in the numbered vault.

Once considered the very crust of hopeful predictions of outlasted hasty demise, partook company with Alice Cooper, Bob Ezrin and even Kim Fowley, our kultur shock heroes just refuse to go away and die. The recipe for their continuing success would be obvious: just keep pumping out those records.

This fanciful little offering produced by Record Plant wonders Eddie Kramer (he of Zeppelin fame) and cut his vinyl teeth on Ted Nugent) surely throws a few hot slices into the oafish oven, that sound they got on back to their original motifs of exploitation heavy metal and preserved their commercial balance by dispensing with their most hideously obnoxious singles as a whole, left to rot by everyone and no one. Who’s fooling who? Soon it will be time for Kiss to fall into the so-bad-it’s-nearly-good category and most of the ditties herein fully deserve that compliment. Take Mr Speed and Calling Dr. Love f’rinstance. Admirable pastiches of Kiss doing Frank Zappa doing Kiss.

The riffs are choice, stolen from the Stones, The Faces, a couple of obligatory originals, it will pass. You get a sticker, a disgustingly contrived, transparent questionnaire so as Gene, Paul, Ace and the cat geezer can give ya more of what ya want next time. Kiss wants to know about you? How old are you? How did you find out about this album?

Next stop, Kiss get elected to Jimmy Carter’s House of Un-American Activities — under 12 division.

    They aren’t that stoopid either!

After they take off the make-up and don the sneakers Kiss like to get smashed. Last time over here Ace (good name) Frehley was so far removed from his natural box he could hardly stand up.

Best rip-off is a piss-take on Rod Stewart, “Hard Luck Woman,” which is superb.

This is the nastiest album Kiss have ever made and if it’s cool to like Thin Lizzy, I’m keeping one step ahead with this. Good to see the true spirit of unashamed idiocy lives on. Don’t just stand there, rock and roll over or something.

    Max Bell

(There are no plans to release this album in the UK at the moment, since Casablanca have severed their UK distribution deal with EMI.)

Music Fans, Why Can’t We All Just Get Along! Respect Other Opinions.

Episode 598. Mark suggested this week’s discussion… respecting the opinions of other people. We start by discussing the comments Blackie Lawless made regarding censorship at his recent NYC show. People can have different opinions and different beliefs and still get along, still be respectful. And of course this sort of behavior is nothing new to KISS fans… what era is better. What band member is better. What album is better. Discuss, but do not get aggressive and violent.

Warning… keep your political comments to yourself in the comments. If you get into political discussions… your a** is grass and we will be the lawnmower.

Ace Frehley solo that is as devastating as that incredible break in Slade’s Mama Weer All Crazee Now

Episode 596. We discuss Creem Magazine’s review of Rock N Roll Over… you need to sit through seven paragraphs of “what the hell is he talking about” before we get to the actually album review, but it is worth it! KISS –

Rock And Roll Over by Billy Altman Creem Magazine Feb 1977

In the last few years we’ve seen the notion of image stretched beyond belief, because most of our biggest stars turn out to be all too ordinary offstage and off the record. If pop music reflects the times, and it usually does, then we’re all in the middle of one huge personality crisis. Which is why Kiss makes perfect sense. Their image, their act, is no more or no less an image or act than Elton John or Lou Reed or Rod Stewart. Rock ‘n’ Roll Over’s one concession to the need for an AM follow up to “Beth” is “Hard Luck Woman”, a hilarious compilation of four Rod Stewart songs roiled into one with Peter Criss singing in perfect Stewartian tones. It will probably annoy a lot of people and I like that. Because Kiss’s masks are as valid as Rod’s Sam Cooke vocal mask, aren’t they?

Rock ‘n’ Roll Over does what it says. It rock ‘n’ rolls over. And over. And over. It is loud. It is simple. And it is fun. “Mister Speed” has an Ace Frehley solo that is as succinct and devastating as that incredible break in Slade’s song “Mama, Weer All Crazee Now.” “See You In Your Dreams” is a primer in tongue-consciousness, creating spaces and then filling them with exactly what you anticipated. “Calling Dr. Love,” on the other hand, leaves all of the spaces open, causing a buildup of tension that doesn’t get resolved until the beginning of the next song Ladies Room.”

Add to this a little Hendrix overtone on “Baby Driver” and some Led Zep thump on “Makin’ Love” and you’ve got an amazing album from a band that knows just what rock ‘n’ roll is, and they don’t just like it, they love it. And I love it. And the little girl from Paterson loves it. And what the hell is wrong with fantasies, anyway?

    Forget the haters, we won!

WTF is Wrong with Some of You People! It is Just a Opinion. Do Not Open Your Mouth Until You Listen!

Episode 594. What the f is wrong with some of you people? Do you understand just how foolish you look when you comment on an episode and you haven’t listened to it first? When you react based on how someone else is reacting? When you offer your opinion of a show that you didn’t listen to, your opinion is garbage. Everything you say is worthless. So let’s clear up all the BS lies about last week’s show. We lay it all out, full transparency, about what REALLY happened and who was involved.

Oh lets remind some of you what we have said since episode number one… It’s only our opinion… it’s neither right nor wrong.

You don’t have to agree with our opinion, that is perfectly fine. But remember your opinion, which might be different than many others, is not the right opinion. It is simply your opinion and nothing more.

Mark expressed his opinion. It only works for Mark. We aren’t trying to change your mind.

    Now stop lying and listen!

    Forget the haters, we won!
