Three Sides of the Coin a KISS Talk Show
Episode 596. We discuss Creem Magazine’s review of Rock N Roll Over… you need to sit through seven paragraphs of “what the hell is he talking about” before we get to the actually album review, but it is worth it! KISS –
Rock And Roll Over by Billy Altman Creem Magazine Feb 1977
In the last few years we’ve seen the notion of image stretched beyond belief, because most of our biggest stars turn out to be all too ordinary offstage and off the record. If pop music reflects the times, and it usually does, then we’re all in the middle of one huge personality crisis. Which is why Kiss makes perfect sense. Their image, their act, is no more or no less an image or act than Elton John or Lou Reed or Rod Stewart. Rock ‘n’ Roll Over’s one concession to the need for an AM follow up to “Beth” is “Hard Luck Woman”, a hilarious compilation of four Rod Stewart songs roiled into one with Peter Criss singing in perfect Stewartian tones. It will probably annoy a lot of people and I like that. Because Kiss’s masks are as valid as Rod’s Sam Cooke vocal mask, aren’t they?
Rock ‘n’ Roll Over does what it says. It rock ‘n’ rolls over. And over. And over. It is loud. It is simple. And it is fun. “Mister Speed” has an Ace Frehley solo that is as succinct and devastating as that incredible break in Slade’s song “Mama, Weer All Crazee Now.” “See You In Your Dreams” is a primer in tongue-consciousness, creating spaces and then filling them with exactly what you anticipated. “Calling Dr. Love,” on the other hand, leaves all of the spaces open, causing a buildup of tension that doesn’t get resolved until the beginning of the next song Ladies Room.”
Add to this a little Hendrix overtone on “Baby Driver” and some Led Zep thump on “Makin’ Love” and you’ve got an amazing album from a band that knows just what rock ‘n’ roll is, and they don’t just like it, they love it. And I love it. And the little girl from Paterson loves it. And what the hell is wrong with fantasies, anyway?
Forget the haters, we won!

Episode 594. What the f is wrong with some of you people? Do you understand just how foolish you look when you comment on an episode and you haven’t listened to it first? When you react based on how someone else is reacting? When you offer your opinion of a show that you didn’t listen to, your opinion is garbage. Everything you say is worthless. So let’s clear up all the BS lies about last week’s show. We lay it all out, full transparency, about what REALLY happened and who was involved.
Oh lets remind some of you what we have said since episode number one… It’s only our opinion… it’s neither right nor wrong.
You don’t have to agree with our opinion, that is perfectly fine. But remember your opinion, which might be different than many others, is not the right opinion. It is simply your opinion and nothing more.
Mark expressed his opinion. It only works for Mark. We aren’t trying to change your mind.
Now stop lying and listen!
Forget the haters, we won!

Episode 593. It’s only Mark and Tommy this week… they discuss where did the live albums go? Why do bands no longer release them and Mark updates on Pop House. The best part is Mark compares Eric Singer to Eric Carr saying Eric Carr was no where near the quality of a drummer that Eric Singer is.

Episode 591. Food Preferences and Izzy’s Eating Habits The team discussed their personal preferences for food, particularly focusing on the McRib and Izzy’s eating habits. They shared their experiences and opinions about the McRib, with some members expressing their love for it and others criticizing it as not being real meat. They also discussed Izzy’s eating habits, with some members recalling an instance where he struggled to finish a large steak. The team also shared their amusement at Izzy’s comedy bits and his interactions with Liz. The conversation ended with a light-hearted discussion about their food preferences and Izzy’s eating habits.
Judas Priest Fan Discussion and Live Performance Tommy, Mark, and Michael discussed their shared love for the band Judas Priest. Tommy shared his recent experience of watching them live in Rochester, Minnesota, and mentioned that they played songs from their album Turbo Lover. Mark expressed his dislike for the Turbo album but enjoyed the live performance. Michael agreed with their opinions and mentioned that Judas Priest’s live performances are always great. The conversation also touched on the band’s history, with Mark mentioning that he has been a fan since 1982 and has seen them perform in Detroit multiple times. The group also discussed the band’s evolution, with Tommy noting that they toned down the synthesizer in their later work. Lastly, Tommy praised the band’s staff for their kindness and accommodating nature, sharing his positive experience with a crew member, Rob, who gave him a guitar pick and a specialty pick.
Concert Memories and Venue Acoustics Tommy and Michael reminisced about their past concert experiences, particularly focusing on shows they attended in Rochester, Minnesota, and smaller cities within a three-hour drive. They discussed attending a Bon Jovi concert at the Mayo Civic Center, where they saw a band perform at an old school concrete building, and Michael shared his memories of meeting some of the band members. They also discussed the acoustics and design of various venues, including the Roy Wilkins in Minneapolis and the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, noting that they were not initially designed with sound quality in mind.
Journey Concert Experience and Band Lineup Changes Tommy expressed his admiration for Journey, particularly drummer Dean Castronova and frontman Arnel Pineda, after attending their concert in Minneapolis. He criticized the harsh treatment of Pineda on social media, attributing it to overplayed songs and the band’s lineup changes. Michael agreed, emphasizing that every band has undergone lineup changes and that fans should not judge based on these changes. They also discussed the importance of confronting trolls and haters, with Michael suggesting that standing up to them can deter their behavior.
Addressing Screen Time and Meet & Greet Concerns Tommy expressed concern about the lack of personal interaction during meet and greet sessions with celebrities, suggesting that this could be a symptom of society’s increasing reliance on screen time and decreasing face-to-face interactions. He emphasized the importance of introducing oneself to the celebrity, as it would make the experience more personal and rewarding.

Episode 587. We go back to October 1979 and read and react to the Creem Magazine review of Dynasty…
“We had some good times, but now they’re gone. So long,.” —Ace Frehley, “Save Your Love”
So long, Ace, it’s been good to know ya.
And, uncool as it may be for someone my age to admit it, y’know, five years ago I held high hopes that you guys would ultimatey transform yourselves into the great American white (faces) rock ’n’ roll hope. But hey, Ace, the Ramones now have that title—and they don’t even wear make-up. But they sure can rock ’n’ roll, eh?
Remember rock ’n’ roll? You guys used to rock ’n’ roll real good. As a matter of fact, Dressed To Kill and Rock ‘n’ Roll Over still rank, along with side four of your second live album, as your supreme studio moments (and that’s not even considering Hotter Than Hell’s “Parasite,” which features your most homicidal guitar solo ever). I mean, the original Alive! still packs enough punch to render Helen Keller senseless. But then something went wrong, beginning with the dreaded (for the wrong reasons) Love Gun, foreshadowed by the equally ominous (again, for the wrong reasons) Destroyer. And Ace, what happened to the much-vaunted “Strutter 78” which appeared on the Double Platinum album? It was actually weaker than either of the original -’74 or live ’75 versions. Then came the glut of solo albums, TV specials and comic books— each new enterprise a coin in the coffer and a nail in the coffin.
By this time, Ace, the low points were beginning to greatly outnumber the highs. Somewhere along the line, you guys lost your demons.
And I miss that. There just aren’t any demons on your new album, Ace. Why don’t you leave the pop diddling to Abba and the disco stuff to Giorgio Moroder? You guys were born to rock ’n’ roll and, although I know you think you’re making a good move career-wise by recording this stuff, believe me, you’re making a lot of your vintage fans (you know, the ones who put you where you are today) angry and—even worse—sad.
Go back to Eddie Kramer and tell him you want to rock ’n’ roll. He’ll know what you mean. – Jeffrey Morgan

Episode 587. We go back to July 1976 and read and react to the Creem Magazine review of Destroyer…
After three near-perfect studio albums and an excellent live summing-up LP that finally put them in the platinum, Kiss have pulled an abrupt change in direction that goes over about as well as a lead Buckinghams.
As the prime purveyors of desensitized stupidity in the twilight of the behavioral sink, Kiss could not be matched. Their 70s treatments of Chuck Berry succeeded where others of the same “mentality” fell short because they alone had a true insight into the realities of day-today teenage dumbness not unlike a latter-day Beach Boys. Songs like “Strutter,” “Deuce,” “Strange Ways,” and the great “Rock ‘N’ Roll All Night” could only be created by drainage experts of the first degree, and several of their tunes have already become bar band classics.
So just when they’re starting to truly make it big, on their own terms no less, what do they do but hire on Alice Cooper producer Bob Ezrin to mold them into the next Billion Dollar Babies. His influence, while not altogether dippy, is still unfortunate, having deprived them of much of their rusty coathanger appeal while filling the album with cute Cooperish touches like giggle children effects, female backup singers, and worst of all: strings!
While there are still several good cuts — “Detroit Rock City,” “Shout It Out Loud,” and Kim Fowley’s “Do You Love Me” — the only way you can get to them is to skip around because Ezrin, in his guiding wisdom, has stuck a totally ludicrous ballad on either side along with other random atrocities like the tubular bells in “Do You Love Me” and the aforementioned kiddie voices which ruin an otherwise fine “God Of Thunder.” Ezrin takes several writing credits as well, which may explain such Alice-like baby anthems as “Flaming Youth” and the token inclusion of the words “rock ‘n’ roll” in nearly every song.
This sure ain’t the scuzzy Kiss we all came to love (and hate) so well and, while Destroyer is selling faster than reds do at one of their concerts, I still think they’re making a big mistake in the long run.
