    On this episode of the podcast, host John Strong welcomes Dr. Jason Rawls back from Ohio. They discuss how youth culture influenced entertainment and education including the history of hip-hop, how to connect with your students via their interests, how the first few weeks of the school year are important and more! 

    Dr. Rawls is not only a scholar and an educator, but he is also a practitioner of Hip-Hop. Dr. Rawls contributed production on the album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, which was critically acclaimed as one of the best albums of 1998 and was a major force in the late-1990s underground hip hop explosion. Dr. Rawls has also produced and DJ’ed for artists such as the Beastie Boys, Ghostface of WuTang Clan, Capital Steez (Pro Era), Slum Village, Souls of Mischief, 9th Wonder, and Us3.

    In addition to his work in music, Dr. Rawls holds a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Cincinnati, a master’s degree in education from Ashland University, and an Educational Doctorate in Educational Administration from Ohio University. Dr. Rawls has presented workshops on the music industry, Hip-Hop Education and beat making at several major universities around the country. Drawing on his nearly two decades of K-12 teaching experience, In 2019, Dr. Rawls, along with his co-author, John Robinson, released his first book entitled Youth Culture Power: A #HipHopEd Guide to Building Teacher-Student Relationships and Increasing Student Engagement (Peter Lang Publishers).

    Episode 169: Sarah Benes & Nadine Marchessault

    Sean is joined by Sarah and Nadine for a great discussion about the National Health Education Standards revision process. They discuss why the standards are being revised currently, the progress the task force has made over the past two years, what lies ahead & more! 

    Nadine Marchessault, MEd, NBCT is the Co-Chair of the National Health Education Standards Task Force. She is also a Health Education Specialist at the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education. Nadine has 17 years of experience in education (PreK-12), which includes service as a teacher and leader. She specializes in health education and mentoring to improve student learning and teacher practice. She is Experienced in designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments aligned to National Health Education Standards. Nadine has facilitated and collaborated with diverse stakeholders to review, adopt, and implement National Health Education Standards in the Hawai‘i State Department of Education.


    Sarah Sparrow Benes (she/her) is currently an Assistant Professor & Program Coordinator of the School Health Education program at Southern Connecticut State University and SHAPE America's President. She transitioned from her role as an Associate Clinical Profession at Merrimack College in fall 2022. She has an Ed.D. in curriculum and teaching, an Ed.M. in human movement, a master’s degree in public health, and a B.S. in athletic training. Sarah started her career at Boston University as an athletic trainer before transitioning to the role of Physical and Health Education Teacher Prep Program Director. Sarah works in schools locally and nationally, and writes and presents on various health education topics.

    Kevin Andrew Richards is an associate professor of physical education and children's physical activity at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His scholarship focuses on the recruitment, education, and ongoing socialization of physical education teachers.

    Michael A. Hemphill is an associate professor of kinesiology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His scholarship focuses on youth development and restorative justice through physical education and youth sport programs.

    Paul M. Wright is the Zimmerman Endowed Professor and Presidential Engagement Professor at Northern Illinois University. His scholarship focuses on positive youth development, social and emotional learning, and sport for development.

    Today, we are welcoming Dr. Cory Dixon to the podcast! Dr. Dixon is an assistant professor of health and PE at Rowan University, in New Jersey. His research focuses on why “race matters” for PE educator preparation, as he advocates for equitable educational opportunities and stronger recruitment and retention practices for Faculty and Students of Color in higher education.

    Dr. Dixon earned his Ph.D. and M.Ed. in kinesiology and physical education teacher education from Auburn University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, sports studies, and physical education from Morehouse College, a historically Black college in Atlanta, GA.

    For the second year in a row, Sean is joined by guests from our recruitment and retention task force to discuss For the Love of Health and Physical Education (HPE) Week!

     

    Emily Jones is a Professor of Physical Education

    Teacher Education, in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation at Illinois

    State University. She is the current chair of the SHAPE America Recruitment and

    Retention Task Force and serves at the state level as the chair of the IAHPERD

    Higher Education Committee. At Illinois State she is program director for the

    undergraduate PE teacher education and coordinates the fully online master’s in

    Physical Education Pedagogy sequence at ISU. Dr. Jones conducts research

    related to recruitment into the field of physical education including the need

    to increase the diversity of those entering the teaching force. She also

    conducts research related to school- and community-based physical activity

    programs and initiatives that enhance health and wellness. 

     

    Ben Schwamberger is an Associate Professor of Health and

    Physical Education, in the Human Performance Department at Minnesota State

    University, Mankato (MSU, Mankato). He currently serves on the SHAPE America

    Professional Preparation Council as well as the Recruitment and Retention Task

    Force and is an active member of his state association MNSHAPE. At MSU, Mankato

    he is the undergraduate program coordinator for the Health and Physical

    Education program. Dr. Schwamberger’s research interests relate to physical

    education and physical activity of homeschool students. Prior to his position

    in higher education, Dr. Schwamberger was an elementary and high school

    physical educator and taught within the United States as well as abroad.
