THAT’S A WRAP on Season 6 of MGIF. I'm taking time over the summer to put together S7 and EVOLVE this thing we call MGIF.

Thank you to ALL my guests without whom this would be a very boring podcast where I’m just talking to myself in various cafés around London.

I’m off to evolve the show in one way or another over the summer and come back to you with something new added to the pod (what that is I’m not sure right now) so stay subbed and we will return in your pod player one day.

As always, thank you so much for listening. Follow me over at @garydooton and @mgifshow. Stay subbed, stay following!

    Lots of Love,

To listen in your browser click the play button above, or simply search “MGIF Podcast” in your favourite podcast player and subscribe!

This episode is with the fabulous voice actor Jess Nesling!

    We talked about:

Growing up in Swansea, finding your “real voice”. how Ice Age inspired Jess to get into voice acting, overcoming shyness, using voice acting to play pranks, taking advantage of the home built voice booth during lockdown and how it influenced Jess’ direction in her career as it looks now, and just absolutely loads more.

Me and Jess have absolutely identical brains and get on marvellously. This is great ep to mark the twentieth pod of the season and I just know you’re gonna love it.

To listen in your browser click the play button above, or simply search “MGIF Podcast” in your favourite podcast player and subscribe!

This episode is with the spectacular Shay Thompson!

I met with Shay at Alexandria Palace - or Ally Pally as it is known - and we had a stroll in the beautiful sunshine before sitting down in a corner of Alexandria Palace to discuss a big variety of topics. We talked about:

Growing up in London and having two bus drivers as parents

    Working in styling and fashion

Getting into presenting and building confidence in that world

    Inspirations

Improving your presenting and getting better at listening and looking back at yourself

Working with McLaren as your first presenting gig

    …and a hell of a lot more!

Shay is just fantastic and we got on really well - I think we should have our own show if I’m honest, so keep that in mind, commissioners, alright? Cool, thanks.

As always, thank you so much for listening. Follow me over at @garydooton and @mgifshow. Stay subbed, stay following!

    MGIF S6 E18: Anna Hollinrake

To listen in your browser click the play button above, or simply search “MGIF Podcast” in your favourite podcast player and subscribe!

This episode is with third time guest, a MGIF staple, podcast soulmate Anna Hollinrake!

I met up with Anna at our favourite sandwich shop and we loaded up on nice stuff before struggling to balance various bagels, coffees and pastries to the local park to chat about the recent announcement of Electric Saint’s first game, Crescent County!

Of course it’s me and Anna, so what ACTUALLY happens is a good half an hour of what happens when you put two brains of a similar type into a sunny park and distract with pigeons, ducks, a heron, a troupe of preschool children on a trip and a swarm of terriers.

Anna is an absolute dream and any and all time spent with her is precious, valuable time and I hope you enjoy coming along on the ride with us. Crescent County looks absolutely incredible, super cool and you should wishlist it today, it’ll really help the game and it deserves to do well

    MGIF S6 E17: Moo Yu

To listen in your browser click the play button above, or simply search “MGIF Podcast” in your favourite podcast player and subscribe!

This episode is with industry veteran, Mr Moo Yu!

I met up with Moo outside Waterloo station in London, where we went for a short stroll on a rainy afternoon before finding a covered space outside a cafe to chat about Moo’s career, his first games growing up, as well as parenting and other topics, before sliding into chat about the very recent announcement of Moo’s new game, Myth Match!

The trailer for this game looks really cool and a really unusual take on the merge puzzle game subgenre, so this will be one to keep an eye on.

Moo is lovely and we had a really fun, animated chat outside Waterloo station as various sirens, motorbikes and traffic lights beeped, rumbled and roared in the background, the advantage of this podcast being those become pleasant background ambience by the time you hear it.

As always, thank you so much for listening. Follow me over at @garydooton and @mgifshow. Stay subbed, stay following!

To listen in your browser click the play button above, or simply search “MGIF Podcast” in your favourite podcast player and subscribe!

This episode is another returning guest - it’s the majestic Lana Zgombic!

I visited Lana at home where she gave me the grand tour of her lovely flat, complete with Elden Ring and Bloodborne themed painted portraits, a selection of Amiibos aplenty and an even greater choice of fancy teas, before sitting down at the dining room table to chat about Lana’s move away from centring all her extracurricular activities around gaming and why that’s important to her right now.

Plus we talk about the current state of the industry and what needs to change in order to encourage young people and diverse candidates into the industry when things are so tumultuous.

AND! As of TODAY, Lana has started at the studio Snap Finger Click, so we talk a little about that at the end of the episode.

Lana is absolutely brilliant and a spectacular guest, and it was a delight to be able to see her again and sit down one to one for this lovely relaxing chat.

This episode is with the POWERFUL Rory Powers.

Rory is one third of the colossal let’s play youtube channel known as RKG, one half of wildly successful podcast This Paranormal Life, a musician, a writer - the guy does it all baby!

I went to the TPL studios to hang out with Rory and chat all SORTS of stuff (as well as video games of course) and it was a belting chat, it really was. Extra long ep this week so get stuck in and I hope you really enjoy it.

Rory is a wonderful guy, thoroughly entertaining and lovely, a natural talent, and we get along really well, so you’ll appreciate the energy in this one I’m sure.

    MGIF S6 E14: Masud Milas

To listen in your browser click the play button above, or simply search “MGIF Podcast” in your favourite podcast player and subscribe!

This episode is with the one and only, Mr Masud Milas!

Masud is a comedian, comedy writer and makes up one third of the Mystery on the Rocks podcast.

We met up in our favourite coffee place then walked around Soho, before sitting down in a park in the beautiful London sunshine.

    We talked about:

    • Working creatively within limits

    • Writing and the creative process

    • Writing for stand up

    • Arthouse films and when they go too far

    • Indie art games and what’s interesting us in that field right now

…and a shite ton of other tangents, as we do on this pod.

Masud is the best, a great pod guest and one of my favourite dudes, so you’re bound to enjoy this one, especially if you heard his first appearance back at the start of Season 5 in 2022!

    MGIF S6 E13 Alex Donaldson

To listen in your browser click the play button above, or simply search “MGIF Podcast” in your favourite podcast player and subscribe!

This episode is with the marvellous Alex Donaldson.

Alex is a video game critic, the owner of RPG Site and Assistant Editor / editor at large for VG247.

We walked around the mean streets of Solihull and took in some gorgeous, verdant sights in the blazing sunshine - a huge long walk was had. Then we popped on the train to Birmingham to have a brief visit to NQ64 before sitting outside and soaking up a few more rays.

This is the first entirely roaming episode of the season, we talked for hours about all sorts and had a great day. What you will hear is a truncated version of our huge chat travelling all around Solihull and Birmingham with topics aplenty.

We spoke about Alex’s upbringing; his unusually early start in games writing, including his first visit to E3 at the age of 18; the future of expos and the games industry; family life; Alex’s obsession with projects, some of which involve tearing up his house (and installing arcade machines); choosing a direction for your websites and staying true to yourself, before closing out with a little bit of Street Fighter chat!

Alex is great and it was real pleasure scooting around Solihull and Birmingham, seeing the sights and chatting for hours til it was time to head home to London.

Thank you so much for listening, follow me over at @garydooton and @mgifshow. Stay subbed, stay following!

    MGIF S6 E12 Simon Parkin

To listen in your browser click the play button above, or simply search “MGIF Podcast” in your favourite podcast player and subscribe!

This episode is with the absolutely wonderful Simon Parkin!

Simon is a journalist, non-fiction writer and games critic. He also hosts the podcast My Perfect Console, where guests are invited to choose five games that are important to them to form their ideal fictional console.

As one of gaming’s best writers, it was an absolute pleasure to have someone like Simon appear on the show. We had a fantastic chat in Loading Bar Stoke Newington about writing both for games and away from games, how Simon picks a topic for his non-fiction books, the way games journalism has changed over the years, Simon’s love for writing and how he got into the industry, and many other little tangents and fun topics along the way.

Simon is wonderful and it was a delight to sit with him of an afternoon and get into some juicy topics. He’s great company and the episode is excellent as a result.

Thank you so much for listening, follow me over at @garydooton and @mgifshow. Stay subbed, stay following!

    MGIF S6 E11 Paul Kilduff-Taylor

To listen in your browser click the play button above, or simply search “MGIF Podcast” in your favourite podcast player and subscribe!

This episode is with the guy they very often call Paul Kilduff Taylor!

Paul is a previous guest of the show, and the man behind Mode7 Games. He is also an extremely brilliant music man who is behind several soundtracks in recent indie games, including the OSTs of Fights in Tight Spaces and the upcoming Knights In Tight Spaces, which is something we get into on the pod.

But not before having a walk around the Soho area and talking an extraordinary amount of shite first. But don’t worry, I’ve edited that bit right down into a manageable chunk of horseshit suitable for all the family.

We found a spare bench to park our bums on and get really into some excitable game design chat as well as generally enthusing about stuff we care about in games.

Paul is funny and knows his stuff in equal measure, so any time he’s on the podcast, it’s an excellent one.

Thank you so much for listening, follow me over at @garydooton and @mgifshow. Stay subbed, stay following!

    Lots of Love,

    Gary x
