Rolling For Change

Rolling for Change is a podcast that explores the therapeutic value of tabletop gaming. Is gaming really good for you? If so, what are the mechanisms and dynamics that make it possible? We intend to find out with monthly podcasts which will explore games, mechanics, themes, and other attributes of the tabletop culture. Not only that, but we will be talking to game designers, and others in the tabletop industry to get their opinion on the psychology behind some of our favorite games. We will also be looking at the function of tabletop gaming in the classroom, and in the therapy office. Finally we will look at the literature and studies regarding the tabletop hobby. Whether your interests are in party games, or role play, bidding, or hidden identity, we hope to gather the information and pose the questions that have been unanswered. We look forward to this new adventure, thanks for joining us.

Shrinks on Bikes- Cricket Falls 8

Due to the length of the sessions our band of merry pranksters used, most episodes will be quickly followed by the next one. At the end, you will also find a short debrief from episodes 7 and 8.

Shrinks on Bikes- Cricket Falls 7

When we started this Kids on Bikes campaign, all we knew is that we each wanted to game, and we wanted to do so with a consciousness towards how character development in RPGs, can play into a bigger picture. The bleed into the game and the bleed out are kind of amazing to watch. If you want real echoes of yourself, create a podcast in which you take all sorts of chances. This game was played during the pandemic and it brought the 4 of us, (5 if you count Sally), a lot of joy. We hope that our game does this for you as well.

    Edrighor with Allen Turner

Last year, Brian, Josue, and Woody got to have a very enlightening discussion with Allen Turner; creator of the game Edrighor. The sound is a little off at times, but this one could not be left in the can as it is too important. Allen was a gracious guest and offered us lots of jumping-off places in our discussion. Please go check out his website and blog and then buy a copy of Edrighor! https://council-of-fools.com/blog/ehdrigohr-rpg/

    Cricket Falls 6

This is the 6th episode in our Cricket Falls story. Initially these were supposed to be a separate podcast, but as it felt that it fit in with the overall tenor of Rolling for Change, we figured we would shop it here first. The podcast when it does have a home, will be called Shrinks on Bikes, an homage to the fact that those of us playing are all mental health professionals. We play for fun and we play to learn about ourselves and our process. You canā€™t very easily claim that you know the therapeutic uses of an rpg without at least first embedding yourself in that system. So we did. You dear listeners are the fortunate, because you get to see the process. It is growth for us all, and hopefully as entertaining for you as it was for us

    Cricket Falls 5

The backlog of episodes for Cricket Falls is pretty large, but I am working to crank out at least 1 a week. For those who missed the first episode, this was my first attempt at creating a narrative rpg. I used the Kids on Bikes system due to its rules lite nature and the very useful structure for developing story and relationship. It is still one of my favorite systems, and it gives us all a chance to be kids, or at the very least contact some childhood trauma.

The production of the show is a little bit garage band. The players are happily clicking away, clocks are chiming, chairs are squeaking. Where possible this has been edited. Despite the bumps and issues, we are presenting these live plays because we had a great time with them. They got each of us through perhaps the most challenging part of the pandemic. We also each got a chance to explore and process our experiences as we went along. Where possible, we are providing those debriefs, but they wonā€™t be in every episode. Many of our meetings were 3-4 hours long, and debriefs were at the end. So when there is a debrief it will be at the back end of the episode most likely.

We hope you are enjoying this crazy little adventure. Keep on role playing for change!

Kris Johnson- Making Art with Games

This conversation between Kris and I happened back in June of 2020. We were in lockdown, wondering what would happen next. Well, what happened is Rolling for Change went silent for a while. However, now Rolling for Change is rising again. On the heels of our amazing TAGGS gathering, Rolling for Change rose back up from its slumber and tapped at the door of consciousness.

My guest this time around is Kris Johnson. Kris uses board game pieces to make works of art. I myself found him when he posted on one of the board game groups I follow. It was a remake of the ā€œBlack Lives Matterā€ fist symbol. I ordered a t-shirt almost immediately. I knew that if someone was doing what he was doing with board game pieces, that was a story I wanted to cover on Rolling for Change. As it turns out, Kris is also an art teacher and he uses games with students at school. Kris is yet another example of how board games can impact our lives and the lives of others. If you would like to check out his work or connect with Kris, I am providing the links below.

    Cricket Falls Episode 3

Rolling for Change returns with the next episode of our Cricket Falls play-through. This episode was originally close to 3 hours long with debriefing, so we broke it into 2 sessions. Thank you for listening.

    Cricket Falls Episode 2

It has been some time since we have presented you guys with something new. We were on a brief hiatus so that yours truly (Woody) could start a new job and 2 more just to be safe. However, we will start getting those episodes out again as quickly as we can.

Today, we return to Cricket Falls for the second episode of our Shrinks on Bikes podcast. Perhaps later in time, this podcast will have its own feed, but for now, RFC is the best outlet for this stuff and if you do not want to listen to a play through, I promise we will have new RFC episodes in the next few weeks.

    Best wishes to you all.

    Victory Point w/ Adi Singal

In this episode, Josue and I meet with Adi Singal, a good friend, and now the producer of his own Hebrew board game review channel. In English its called Victory Point. Adi talks about what brought him to making his Youtube Channel, his love for linguistics, and of course games. Here is a link to see Adiā€™s channel for yourselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbawdIniF0E

    Shrinks on Bikes (Ep 1)

As we started our social distancing and lockdown experience, Tim Grant, Brennan Jordan, Brian Quinones, and myself (Woody Harris) started a game of Kids on Bikes both as a way of helping me get used to Gming, and as a way of passing our indoor time. We had the notion that this story would play out as a podcast. This is the first episode of that strange adventure. We are going on 16 weeks of this story now. It has been an immense learning curve for me as GM, but mostly it has just been an incredible joy to participate in story collaboration with these guys. Although this may eventually find a different home than Rolling For Change, I wanted anyone who is interested to get a listen to this crazy story. As a new GM, I think what is amazing is how the improvisation and worldbuilding played out. There are certainly some logical inconsistencies, and we may mess names up here and there, but as a tool for understanding the potentials in an RPG, I think it was a rather amazing event. I donā€™t think I would have made it through our social isolation with much sanity left were it not for spending time with these guys. I hope you all enjoy it and I look forward to feedback and input.
