Il est actuellement le président du Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, à Paris. Après avoir passé vingt ans à l'IFREMER, il a été directeur durant six ans de l'Observatoire océanologique de Banyuls, puis pendant quatre ans de l'unité CNRS/UPMC Modèles en biologie cellulaire et évolutive. Il a été membre de nombreux conseils scientifiques et a siégé neuf ans au Comité national de la recherche scientifique (1991-2000).
