In the New Testament book of James (James 15:7-15), Jesus introduces His friends to the Holy Spirit—the Advocate or Helper (depending on your version) before laying out the Spirit's ministry roles. The Christian practice of communion involves taking bread and juice to rededicate ourselves to Jesus. It harkens back to the upper room (Luke 22:18-20) when Jesus invites his disciples to "do this in remembrance of Me." But there's a related practice called the Ordinance of Humility, which also reflects the actions of Jesus in John 13:1-9 as He stooped to wash the disciples' feet. Footwashing isn't a rebaptism, but rather a "re-surrender" of our lives to Jesus as our Lord and Savior. It symbolically cleanses us of the dust we've gathered on our journey and signifies a rededication to living in alignment with Him. If we understand the layout and purpose of the Old Testament sanctuary, we will better grasp how God is continually moving and working to make His way back to the center of our lives. We live in an age of being everywhere—except where we truly are. Your body may be at the dinner table, but your mind is already thinking about tomorrow. You’re looking at your children, but your heart is on that email from work (you know the one). You’re sitting in worship, but your brain is processing through the busy week ahead. Oftentimes, the devil doesn’t always need you to be disobedient—he’s thrilled if he can keep you busy, distracted, and constantly feeling like you haven’t quite succeeded. Why? Because a distracted disciple is a weaker disciple, which can mean being a weaker friend, weaker spouse, weaker parent, etc. Tune in as Pastor Chad closes our New Year’s sermon series “Be: Resolutions That Matter for Others” with a message titled “Be Present.” It's easy to say, hard to do, but there’s no more important place to be!
