Battle of the Linguist Mages
Today on the show, Cole and Ben welcome playwright and novelist Scotto Moore. Scotto is a Seattle-based, multi-media raconteur who, for fourteen years, has been a cornerstone of the Seattle Fringe Theatre community. During his fourteen years as an active playwright, we saw major productions of his work nearly every year, including at least 45 short plays penned for events like 14/48: THE WORLD’S QUICKEST THEATRE FESTIVAL.
Theatre highlights include his a cappella sci-fi musical Silhouette, which premiered at Annex Theatre, winning the 2018 Gregory Falls Award for Outstanding New Play, presented by Theatre Puget Sound.
His break-out sci-fi/horror novella “Your Favorite Band Cannot Save You,” was published by Tor.com in 2019, and today we come together to discuss Scotto’s eagerly anticipated debut Tor.com novel, “Battle of the Linguist Mages,” based on his stage plays Duel of the Linguist Mages and Balconies, which will be released in early 2022.
We’re also joined by Manager Mike Gilson, who has performed in Scotto’s play Balconies, and was a proof-reader for “Battle of the Linguist Mages.”
Today we talk with Scotto about:

Frank Gogol
Today on the show, Cole and Ben welcome Frank Gogol. Frank is a San Francisco-based writer of Grief (Ringo Award nominee), Dead End Kids (Best New Series, The Independent Creator Awards), and No Heroine, all from Source Point Press.
The child of addicts, Frank’s a humble dude whose comics greatly reflect the world around him as he grew up. He spent much of his youth moving from place to place, with occasional stints in foster care and group homes as he dealt with his very complicated relationship with his mother. His first anthology collection, Grief contains short stories of addiction, betrayal and abandonment. Dead End Kids tells the tale of a group of Stephen King-esque outcasts as they try to solve the mysterious murder of one of their own, and No Heroine is about a woman trying desperately to stay clean – all the while doing her best to mend her relationship with her mother, find her place in this world, and kill as many vampires as she can. Volume 2 of Dead End Kids will be in stores in January, 2021.
Join us as we talk to Frank about:
• How he got involved with Source Point Press
• What inspired Dead End Kids
• Working with artists such as Ben Templesmith
• How he dealt with the success of Dead End Kids
• How he feels about conventions
• Volume 2 of Dead End Kids: The Suburban Job
• How 9/11 influenced him
• His influences for No Heroine
• What he’s learned through all of his artistic collaborations
• His ideas for licensed characters
• His newsletter

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Perfect Bound Podcast is forced to take a hiatus. But before we shelter in place in order to weather this pandemic, we have one last show for you. This never-before-aired show, recorded in October of 2019, finds Chris, Cole, and Ben talking about horror comics. Specifically, COSMIC HORROR! Black Stars Above from Vault describes itself as “cosmic horror,” so we delve deep into this very specific horror sub-genre. And yeah, there’s a lot of Lovecraft.
If you’ve enjoyed listening to the show for the past five years, please consider donating to the Paycheck Security GoFundMe for Comics Dungeon and Corner Comics. We understand that everybody is having a hard time these days, but if you have anything to give, the employees of the Dungeon and Corner would certainly appreciate it.
And be sure to like the Perfect Bound Podcast on Facebook to stay up to date on when we’ll be back.
