emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Emerald Fennell, originally episode 540 from 2023-11-15.

    Original writeup below:

An excellent chat with the very awesome Emerald, whose work you will likely have caught up with over the past few years in any one of her many capacities. Playing Camilla on The Crown, writing on Killing Eve, or writing and directing 2020's brilliant Promising Young Woman. Here we catch up with Emerald in promotionland to hear about her new film Saltburn, which we'll see in cinemas around mid-November. But as you will know from this podcast, it's not as basic as simple promotion - Pip gets into a lot of the mechanics of Emerald's world, including process, world building, reference, inspiration, small and big screen, casting, personal idea hierarchies, and so much more. It's a real pleasure to hear about it all in depth, so set aside some time to really enjoy this one. You shall!

CORIN HARDY • the horror movie whistle-blower (Whistle / The Nun / Gangs Of London) #658

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by film-maker and director CORIN HARDY!

Corin's new film 'Whistle' aptly drops on Friday 13th, which will surely be on the radar of the horror heads among you but if not, it might form part of your forthcoming movie schedule after listening to this one... Corin's served many years in the game, from time spent in set design and then onto stop motion, which led onto over 50 music videos which further led to working in a more cinematic capacity. It's been a hugely creative path, all underpinned by music which also forms a huge link in the chain (as you'll hear from the mutual interest in Operation Ivy and Rancid), and as with all Distraction Pieces the chat reins are loosened and conversation wanders into all sorts of awesome ground. Crucially though - you'll hear a ton about Whistle (without hearing the whistle itself - thankfully? - which is present throughout the chat), and the process of bringing it to the screen. ENJOY!

FEARNE COTTON (Happy Place / Top Of The Pops) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Fearne Cotton, originally episode 295 from 2019-10-30.

    Original writeup below:

This is the mirror side of a two podcast deal the two of them struck up, where Pip appeared on her ‘Happy Place’ podcast, so as you’ll witness, the driver is often interchangeable, but it’s all perfect as they get on just grand. Maybe it’s because they were born a month apart and have the same cultural touchstones - WHO KNOWS! Whatever the case, it’s a breeze of a podcast which touches on so much including a sentence which features Hanson and Led Zeppelin in the same breath (in fact I think it could be called an “Mmm Bop-cast” but that’s of no consequence), her intro into different kinds of music, being mates with Sarah Cawood and how she eventually got into gig going through her, Coldplay haters, the power of music shared on a mass scale, cathartic crying sessions, early days of her presenting on TV and growing up in front of the camera, presenting the Disney Club, still being treated as a kid in adult life, the old fashioned kid poop story which serves as a grounding device, how being a cool parent isn’t possible, her book ‘Happy’, losing her sense of self in her 20’s and regaining it later, social media, podcast therapy, changing one’s self in the midst of crisis and her work with CoppaFeel. But of course, SO much more. Lovely stuff from start to end. ENJOY!

JESS MEGAN • surviving grief, addiction and social media #657

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by model, activist and general whirlwind of greatness JESS MEGAN!

A deluxe edition of the podcast this week as Pip catches up with Jess, which as you will bear witness to, is no average catch up. While they worked together on the 'Dark Summer' Speech Development merch shoot back in 2016, which seems like mere months ago, that was an entire decade ago it turns out. And as with life in general, it also turns out that an almost insurmountable itinerary can intervene. In Jess's case, without treading on any of what you're about to hear, there's been an immense amount of grief, varying degrees of addiction, depression, and in case you need any sensitivity warnings, there is frank discussion of suicide - so please know that before you begin this episode.

Of course, among the heavier elements of the conversation, a huge amount of light enters - Jess and Pip are lovely people and you're in safe hands, as hopefully you'll feel aware of by now. There's a lovely balance of the fun and the far more serious, including a lot of fascinating chat regarding social media and the like. But importantly, even if this situation doesn't mirror one of your own, there will likely be familiar moments or perhaps some which might be of help for others going through it. However you meet it, you'll emerge at the end in a different spot, and hopefully have found a glorious new friend in the bargain. A valuable, intimate but ultimately incredibly powerful conversation right here folks.

WILL POULTER (Midsommar / Detroit / The Bear) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Will Poulter, originally episode 167 from 2017-10-17.

    Original writeup below:

In the midst of his current promo run for Kathryn Bigelow's 'Detroit', Will takes time to sit down with Pip for a long overdue chat covering - as you will have come to expect from the DPP - a crazy large number of bases... From the issues raised in portraying a violently racist policeman in 'Detroit' (and the poignancy of the film itself), a powerful back and forth is triggered with Pip and Will, which is the beauty of films like this and how an open discussion can be had which leads into so much more besides - race, politics, society, it's all here. On top of that, you'll hear his tale from the very early days back in 'School Of Comedy' and how his young foot in the acting world's door gave him the necessary inspiration for a full on career, Will drops some gems from his unique perspective on his experience with acting and his ascent from those younger days right up to 'Son Of Rambow', 'The Maze Runner' and 'The Revenant', the latter of which had him up alongside Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hardy no less. A rich and diverse filmography right there, which has in many ways freed him from his somewhat reductive nickname of 'that Weird Eyebrow Actor'. Get yourself involved, it's a goodie and as interesting as it is entertaining.

CHRISTOPHER MACARTHUR-BOYD & ROSCO McCLELLAND • Shooting Ropes meets Distraction Pieces! (Shooting Ropes podcast / comedy) #656

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by a couple of Scotland's finest comics, CHRISTOPHER MacARTHUR BOYD & ROSCO McCLELLAND!

Following on from the past few multi-pronged guest featured episodes, here we have a devastating duo who find their home in comedy but are also out on the block in podcast form with 'Shooting Ropes' (available in the usuals). A really fun and funny chat which stays very close to the realms of the wild and crazy, but occasionally touches on the slightly more serious. But then boom, along comes the wild and crazy. Basically it's a really fun one, and while there could be a list of topics which are approached, why not let you the listener discover them all for yourself...! You'll have a glorious time doing so. Check their podcast for more of this super fun chemistry. and peep them on the road when they roll through! But most importantly - ENJOY!

DEFUND THE POLICE: Discussed • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we look back at the Defund The Police two-part discussion, originally episode 330 from 2020-06-19.

    Original writeup below:

A very timely and hugely informative one for you this week, as Pip is joined by two guests, one after the other. The first is Alex S. Vitale (professor of sociology at Brooklyn College, US), followed by Dr Adam Elliott-Cooper (University Of Greenwich, humanities and social science department).

With everything we’ve seen over the last month in most recent history, one sentiment and statement that’s been gaining traction is “Defund The Police”. On face value and without any further research or intrigue, this could come across in an entirely different way than it is supposed to. Pip did a good amount of digging, and after being passed along to appropriate potential guests, meetings were set up and he arrived at two people who are well versed and well equiped to speak on the issue. In the interest of balance, he speaks to Alex from the US, where the issue is very pertinent and pressing and also has very different implications for society there, and also Adam from the UK, who goes into what this means for the UK and the nuances involved.

It’s a complex matter for sure, but along with the accompanying links from Pip to break down what’s been talked about, and a comprehensive conclusion, you’ll hopefully be way more up on the subject than you might have been previously, and have a good understanding on what it means to say ‘defund the police’. Be informed, share, and enjoy.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the powerful duo and awesome individuals ELLIOT STEEL & JAMALI MADDIX!

Together they form the Drivetime Show podcast, but you will surely know each of them through past projects (be it Jamali's 'Hate Thy Neighbour' and time on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, or Elliot's standup). As such, this is the perfect pyramid of minds for a really engaging and constantlty moving episode which offers a fine balance of time between each of them, punctuated by some welcome eruptions of laughter. It's a full on chat and they come in hot, covering a HUGE amount of subjects stemming from society and politics and the many branches, and you know they've all got stories for days - so settle in and get ready for a full on and properly satisfying one right here folks.

BRETT GOLDSTEIN & JON DREVER (Superbob together, and much more in the next decade) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Brett Goldstein and Jon Drever, originally episode 62 from 2015-10-07.

This is a very early days episode right here, the chasm of time made only wider when you consider the career arcs of those involved in the time intervening... Jon is one of the OGs of production company Grain Media, the home of the wonderful Superbob (made by he and Brett), who has now gone on to focus on producing comedy and has been more solo since 2018 or so. Brett has always been doing comedy / writing / film, and since the huge success of Superbob has gone onto find the combination to the universe by way of Ted Lasso, Shrinking, All Of You, and indeed the (some might say) perfectly edited podcast Films To Be Buried With. Here is a snapshot of - at time of this Rewind - over a decade ago, which is such an interesting position from which to view this point in time. Enjoy, and catch all of their furture work too of course.

JAMES NELSON-JOYCE • from a chance meeting in a chicken restaurant to a beautiful acting path ahead (A Thousand Blows / This City Is Ours / Black Mirror) #653

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by the most excellent actor JAMES NELSON-JOYCE!

A delightful session with Pip and James, which will bring you adequately up to speed on all things past and present. A lot of seeds were sewn in a not-far-off Nandos where he bumped into Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters (two names which will create the warming glow you can feel from this episode), and from then on we hear about what followed including playing Stephen's brother in A Thousand Blows, how to play a chemistry read, building the backstory, the internalised shame of holding back the reveal of wanting to be an actor, school monologues, the arts being for everyone, and working as part of an ensemble. Naturally you'll be treated to so much more besides, but all in all you can trust that this one's a great one and your attention towards James's past roles will be rewarded!

    Firstly, Are You Okay? #653

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A non-Rewind Friday for the early days of 2026 as Pip celebrates some very recent past highlights, and the birthday of a very special boy. 🐶

The above does actually kind of sum it all up nicely right there but make sure you check it - a delightful little diversion and a very cool, necessary and apt 'stop to breathe' moment in what could already be a very hectic year. Also shouts to Amelia, Finley, Jessie from The Traitors and probably way more but that's a good amount of shouts for now. Loads of love from all at Distraction Pieces, we shall see you all next week!
