Peter Blackman, born in Barbados in 1909, emigrated to the UK as a young man with a scholarship to Durham University.  Working as a missionary in Gambia, he became aware of the economic apartheid between black and white priests.  After the war, he worked as a mechanic on the British railway and became an active union representative, also publishing political poetry in small and obscure journals.  In this podcast, Chris Searle discusses Peter Blackman's life and reads extracts of his as yet little known poetry, which is soon to be published as a new collection.

Using General Social Survey data, we examine whether any association between job insecurity and well-being is contingent on economic climate (comparing those interviewed in turbulent 2010 vs. pre-recessionary 2006), as well as income and gender. We find respondents with higher levels of job insecurity in 2010 reported lower levels of happiness compared to those similarly insecure in 2006. The positive relationship between job insecurity and days of poor mental health becomes more pronounced for those in the third quartile of personal income in 2010, suggesting middle-class vulnerability during the economic downturn. Men (but not women) with higher insecurity report more days of poor mental health in both 2006 and 2010. These findings reinforce a “cycles of control” theoretical approach, given the mental health–job insecurity relationship is heightened for workers in turbulent times.

The special issue “Crossing Boundaries: Working and Communicating in East Asia” was conceived with the intent to give a stronger voice to research on business communication practices in East Asian countries. The realities of a global business marketplace call for knowledge that would deepen our understanding of other cultures and dismantle the monolithic concept of “Asia” so frequently held by the West. Our goal was to provide a forum for scholarship from this region, the findings of which can and should be incorporated into training programs and operational practices in international business.

A discussion with Dr. Raman Khanna from UC San Francisco regarding his paper CPOE and discussion regarding the politics surrounding its widespread adoption, literature and studies showed both improved outcomes but also some unexpected negative consequences, and how CPOE will affect the practicing neurologist now and in the future.
