Episode 619: Parasite (with Dana Zahler)

Have you ever gotten sick while traveling? Really sick?

Today's special guest, Katy's sister Dana, has and on this possibly TMI episode, she joins Katy and Tiffany to explore the illnesses that you might encounter abroad. And how sometimes, they linger with you longer than you had bargained for.

***Katy's sister Dana (who appears on this episode) has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 agressive brain cancer. Bittersweet Past: The Beauty of No (with Sheri Salata and Nancy Hala)

In this interview from our archives, the executive producer of the Oprah Winfrey Show, Sheri Salata and her cohost Nancy Hala on the popular podcast, The Sheri and Nancy Show join us on this very special episode! Sheri is the author of the new book, The Beautiful No, And Other Tales of Trail, Transcendence, and Transformation.

They discuss the inevitable question that arrives somewhere in your 50s: what's next? In the midst of a major career, an enriching family life, or other successes, how to you find inspiration for your next steps, and more importantly, how to make a total commitment to yourself to make that happen?

Part of that is admitting that you don't need to settle for success in only one or two areas of your life: you can have the whole package—if you want it. And often it's the tiny changes that make a world of difference.

They also propose trashing the now-prevalent work-life balance ideal, as all it seems to do is instill shame and failure in so many women. Lastly, they urge people to curate their own life experiences, instead of simply letting life happen.

Find Sheri and Nancy on Instagram.

***The Bittersweet Life podcast has been on the air for an impressive 10+ years! In order to help newer listeners discover some of our earlier episodes, every Friday we are now airing an episode from our vast archives! Enjoy!***

In this week's episode from our archives, we sit down with Jennifer to chat about her book, ArtCurious: Stories of the Unexpected, Slightly Odd, and Strangely Wonderful in Art History and delve into the fascinating world of mystery and art.

PS Jennifer has a new book out! Check it out here: The Club: Where American Women Artists Found Refuge in Belle Époque Paris.

Episode 617: Returning Home to a Different Country (with Brie Ripley)

Lately it seems like lots of Americans are moving abroad. But, believe it or not, some American expats are moving back to the States.

Today we're joined by one such ex-expat, or repatriate. Seattle-native Brie Ripley has been on the show before. We first interviewed her back in 2024 after she moved to Rome without ever having been there before. She joined us again about sixe months later, after she had settled in.

And today we sit down with her to talk about why she and her husband decided to move back to the US and what it's been like to repatriate at such a time in history.

She reminisces about the things she misses about Rome, discusses what led to the decision to leave that sometimes feels like a mistake, and shares her thoughts about what it feels like to leave a place just as you're starting to feel at home now.

She also talks about what it feels like to move back to a country that in many ways you can't recognize, how her priorities have shifted after living in Europe, and the realities of culture shock.

The Bittersweet Past: Before and After Baby

On this episode from our archives, we give all our listeners a peek into some of the extra bonus content that our Patreon donors are receiving. Every month we offer one or more bonus episodes exclusively for our Patreon supporters, and today we are sharing one of those with our entire audience.

Way back in 2015, we taped a final episode just before Tiffany took a break to have her baby and begin learning the ropes of motherhood. In the second half of the episode, taped several years later, we re-listen to that "before baby" episode and offer real-time commentary on it.

Did Tiffany have any idea what she was getting in to? How has motherhood changed her, and is it anything like what she expected?

Listen in, and if you like it, consider supporting the show on Patreon for as little as $5 dollars a month, and get extra content like this twice every month. And know that your donation are (quite literally) what keeps this show alive!
