  • Suzy Brandtastic Interviews Laura Skolar, Jersey City Parks Coalition
Amazing events are happening around Jersey City, many of which are hosted by Pershing Field Garden Friends, one of the parks in the coalition. Listen in as Susan Newman (aka Suzy Brandtastic) talks with Laura Skolar, one of the founding members and current president of the Jersey City Parks Coalition. In today's talk we're going to talk about FeedJC's Dinner in the Park (series), JC Reservoir's Wild Jazz Adventure (series); The Seasonal poetry, prose and song at JC Height's 942 Summit: Do You Tea?, WHOs Gluten Free, and Bloombury Sq. Also, Washington Park Live on Sept. 26, and multiple parks will have events during JCAST weekend. The Jersey City Parks Coalition is a collection of neighborhood and park groups working together to grow and improve Jersey Cityâ??s park system. The Coalition is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization since 2005. Laura Skolar is one of the founding members of the organization and current President. The Jersey City Parks Coalition has become a significant park and open space advocacy organization. Today we are twenty two members strong representing every ward in Jersey City. We have forged a durable relationship between the community and the City and have strengthened our base by partnering with like-minded organizations. Grants and fundraising to date have produced over $700,000 for park improvements and programming to say nothing of the thousands of volunteer hours that have been invested in our parks every year. Our 2011 BIG DIG initiative, an idea conceived by one of our members for National Make a Difference Day, has brought us national recognition through USA WEEKEND Magazine. This project truly embodied the nationwide effort of volunteerism which engages communities to plan and execute a one-day project that will impact their neighborhood, their community, their city. Our goal of encouraging active participation of residents in the beautification of their local parks and public spaces came to fruition through the positive outreach created by the BIG DIG. We have formalized our partnership with the City of Jersey City through an MOU, which codifies the role of the Parks Coalition and the City regarding the development, use and maintenance of all our parks and public spaces. This may be our greatest accomplishment to date, paving the way for future generations in this public/private enterprise.

  • Suzy Brandtastic Interviews Ilah Hickman, Idaho State Amphibian Advocate
Listen in as Susan Newmn (aka Suzy Brandtastic) and founder of Frogs Are Green interviews Ilah Hickman, a young woman from Idaho who advocated for the Idaho State Amphibian. About Ilah: I am now in 8th grade at Les Bois Junior High in Boise Idaho. Ever since that fourth grade assignment, I have been determined to have a new state symbol designated in Idaho. In fourth grade I learned that many other states had a state amphibian or reptile designated, but Idaho did not. So I decided to research amphibians and reptiles, and also found out who my representatives were in the legislature and wrote to them. My district Senator met with me in the summer before 5th grade and recommended I pick one symbol, so after my research I decided to choose the Idaho Giant Salamander as a state amphibian. In 6th grade I had a committee hearing in the House but the bill did not go any further than that. In 7th grade the bill started in the Senate, and it passed all the way through the full Senate but then the House committee ran out of time and I did not get a hearing there. Now this year the bill was given a committee hearing in January, and they voted against sending it to the full House for a vote. But then last week the committee Chairman called us and said they had "revived" the Bill and yesterday it went to full House for a vote and passed 51-17. Now I am hoping it gets to the Senate before the legislature adjourns this session.

Michael DiFeo is also a local Jersey City Artist who teaches engineering and chess to children.  He uses long exposure photography with gestural camera movement to create his images.  His work is about the idosyncrasises of the medium and is also a visceral reaction to our world.   Bojana and Mike met when they were both exhibiting at an Art House art show two years ago.  Due to how drastically different their work is they help each other venture into different artistic territory.  Recently they have begun collaborating artistically and this has evolved into them creating "Artnest" which is their home gallery in Jersey City Heights.
