Friendship! Effort! Victory!

M. Barnard

Ever looked at that manga thing all the hip kids are into and thought "Man, I wish I knew more about that"? Probably not, but if you're curious enough to get some loose history and background information on the most popular manga magazine out there, then this is for you. Dragon Ball, YuYu Hakusho, Naruto, we'll explain them all!

  • Friendship! Effort! Victory! Episode 03 – Hoop Men

The first of what will surely be many, many gush-fests about cancelled comics.

What is Hoop Men?: Hoop Men is Yukinori Kawaguchi’s 2009 basketball series about a relatively unskilled Yuuho Satou, who gets into basketball through the unusual circumstance of being able to translate for their new ace, Joshua Kuji Griffin Jr.! A surprisingly subdued story by Weekly Shonen Jump’s standards, and a quickly cancelled mess, but a beloved title I want to explore with you.

What is Friendship! Effort! Victory!: Friendship! Effort! Victory! (or FEV for short) is a podcast about the various titles in Weekly Shonen Jump’s 50+ year history. It used to exist about half a decade ago, and it exists again now, with new episodes coming out on the second and fourth fridays of every month.

Jump’s best series gets gushed about by a Jump fan with a mild cold

What is Black Clover?: Black Clover is the sophomore title of one Yuki Tabata, serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2015 to the present day. It tells the story of a young orphan boy without any magical ability, Asta, as he aims to become the Wizard King. It’s also my absolute favourite Weekly Shonen Jump series currently running in the magazine, so here’s me gushing about it for 40 minutes.

What is Weekly Shonen Jump?: Well, that’s what this podcast aims to answer, at least in the most basic of ways. In this first episode focusing specifically on Weekly Shonen Jump itself I intend to introduce you to some basic information about the magazine, as well as a little bit of mythbusting and some personal info about my history with the magazine, and some of my favourite titles!

  • THE WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP ASSISTANT CHART

Recently I had a week off of work, and wanted to finish a project that I’ve never quite managed to push through, and my mind immediately went to KTR’s Comic Room, and their fantastic Jump Assistant’s Chart, which I’ve tried to do stuff with on and off with for YEARS.

A huge brunt of the work had previously been done with help from Twitter pal (and skilled Gintama novel translator) Hugh, who had gone over an earlier chart for me some time back, providing a lot of the more difficult and obscure author and series names, giving me a lot of room to work on newer entries and to more easily verify the authors’ existences.

So with some additional basic translating, redrawing, additions and subtractions based on my own research (and the solid gold that is the Media Art Database), I can now present you with an updated, translated chart of Jump authors, and the people who’ve worked under them!

CLICK THE IMAGE TO SEE THE ABSURD THING I HAVE WROUGHT

I’ll be revising and improving this whenever I get the chance, and would love to make more accessible or streamlined variants of it, but for the most part, I hope you enjoy this stupidly large chart. It’s pretty neat.

The work KTR has done here is phenomenal, and it’s been a joy to put together my own version of the chart, mostly as a personal resource for my own work, but also just as a thing to share with the community. So please feel free to use and share this chart as you like, but if you’re feeling particularly kind, drop me a few pennies over at Ko-Fi. It would be appreciated, and money earned that way goes straight back into the site and projects like this. Thank you.

UPDATE 16/09/18: Shiro Usazaki and their recently published assistant Kento Matsuura have been added to the chart.
