Saturday, 27th April, 2024, Chris Christoforou,CEO, Victorian Alcohol & Drug Association (VAADA), Second Safe Injecting Room Abandoned

Macca and Paul talk to Chris Christoforou CEO, Victorian Alcohol & Drug Association (VAADA), as Premier Jacinta Allan has announced that the  second safe Injecting room has been abandoned

Premier Jacinta Allan has declared Victoria will never get a second injecting room under her leadership, after the government failed to identify a CBD location that would not hurt the city’s shopping strips and stigmatise vulnerable drug users.

Allan abandoned the four-year-old policy on Tuesday, against the recommendations of former police commissioner Ken Lay’s report, which the government requested in 2020 when it promised to open a safe injecting room in the CBD. The government remains committed to the existing North Richmond facility, which first opened as a trial in 2018.

Saturday, 27th April, 2024: Closure of Darwin’s Only Gay Club, Throb.

Macca and Paul talk to Tim and Markowners of Throb, Darwin’s only gay bar/club due to structural issues.

The Northern Territory’s Building Control issued the order in September 2023.
Authorities identified fire and safety hazards as well as “un-authorised building works including the removal of walls,” the NT News reported.

A message on the Throb Nightclub Facebook page announced the long-running nightclub’s closure “until further notice”.

The team explained in the post the emergency order “stemmed from the removal of a supporting wall in the tenancy below ours.”

Throb owner Tim Palmer told the NT News at the time he agreed with the Building Control decision and said the hazards could have resulted in a “catastrophic” and “life-threatening” situation.

Saturday, 27th April, 2024: Dan Holmes, journalist, The Mandarin, Elon Musk Vs the eSafety Commission

Macca and Paul are joined live on air by Dan Holmes, journalist, The Mandarin, Elon Musk Vs the eSafety Commission is a bizarre and interesting story

“Australia’s eSafety commissioner has obtained a Federal Court injunction to force the removal of harmful content from X, formerly known as Twitter.

The notice required X to take all reasonable steps to ensure the removal of the extremely violent video content of the alleged terrorist act at Wakeley in Sydney on April 15.

The commissioner issued a removal notice for video and images of the attack on April 16. X 0wner and noted “free speech absolutist” Elon Musk responded to these requests by calling the esafety commissioner the “Australian Censorship Commissar”, and refusing to make any changes”.

Saturday, 27th April, 2024: Abdurahman Katamish, Queer Muslims Naarm (Melbourne), Founder

Abdurahman Katamish, known as Boudie, is an Egyptian-born LGBTIQ+ advocate who moved to Melbourne seeking a more inclusive environment. In Egypt, he co-founded an underground organization to support queer individuals, despite cultural stigmas.

In Melbourne, Boudie turned to volunteering during the COVID-19 pandemic, quickly becoming active with Thorne Harbour Health, where he helped deliver pantry parcels to people living with HIV. He has since volunteered with the Victorian Pride Centre, Midsumma Festival, and Hares & Hyenas, among others. Boudie also co-founded Queer Muslim Naarm with Sasja Sydek, an initiative dedicated to supporting queer Muslims in Melbourne and fostering a sense of community and belonging.

As the Volunteer Engagement Officer at Thorne Harbour Health, Boudie plays a key role in coordinating volunteers and engaging with the community. His dedication to volunteering has earned him awards like the Thorne Harbour Health Special Service Award and the GLOBE Award for LGBTIQ Volunteer of the Year.

The intersectionalities of Boudie’s identity as a queer Muslim inspire his commitment to community building. Through Queer Muslim Naarm, he seeks to create a safe space for queer Muslims, challenging cultural stigmas and providing support. Boudie believes in the transformative power of volunteering and encourages newly arrived LGBTIQ+ individuals to build connections to feel a sense of belonging in a new environment.

Saturday 20th, April, David Manne, Human Rights Lawyer and Executive Director of Refugee Legal: High Court case on detainees, indefinite detention, Bollard Man, Security guard Muhammad Taha

Macca and Paul talk to David Manne, Human Rights Lawyer and Executive Director of Refugee Legal: High Court case on detainees, indefinite detention, Bollard Man, Security guard Muhammad Taha

The High Court is hearing a case this week to decide if the government’s indefinite detention of a bisexual Iranian man is lawful, partly because he is unwilling to voluntarily assist with the government’s attempts to deport him.

While the case turns on a narrow question of Australian constitutional law, it also raises urgent concerns about the human consequences of a flawed and discriminatory “fast-track” legal process for determining the status of asylum seekers who arrive by boat.

“The case is tied to widely criticised immigration reforms the Albanese government is attempting to push through parliament. The reforms seek to punish people who do not actively cooperate in their own deportation, even in cases where people have good reasons for not cooperating or when certain countries, like Iran, do not accept the forced return of their citizens”

Saturday 20th, April, 2024: QUEER-WAYS: FROM ARCHIVE TO ARTWORK, with LUCIANO

‘Queer-ways: Retracing Queer Footprints’ is a community arts initiative that shares the queer history of Australia, combining stories from the past and present into permanent, interactive records. Fusing archive materials with community consultation and immersive experiences, the Queer-ways initiative generates accessible ways of presenting tangible and intangible heritage to illuminate and contest mainstream narratives.

Queer-ways has retraced the queer footprints of Melbourne in Augmented Reality maps, St Kilda in an interactive mural and the City of Yarra through a series of self-led audio walking tours. They have also charted the queer history of Mildura, Wodonga, Shepparton, Ballarat, Geelong and Daylesford to represent the often-untold stories of regional Victoria’s rainbow communities.

Public Record Office Victoria hosts Queer-ways co-creator LUCIANO in conversation with Gayathri Wijesekera, founder of design and marketing agency Rik and Ralph, to explore how they unite design, history and community to bring to life archive materials.
