My life changed irrevocably thereafter. At once, I was wayward, nearly purposeless, listless on a great ocean. The object of my youthful affection had been stolen from me, and I was cheated out of a future that Icould see clearly. The life of a General with a great lady by my side. Perhaps children. Perhaps. All dashed by the evil of greed, a sin that I have come to appreciate least of all. Thankfully, of all of my own sins, I suffer least from that one. I was in no mood for argument when I returned from the cemetery, but argument found me easily enough.

My life changed within a matter of days. John Allan had given me all that I had asked upon my foster mother's death. I am not sure as to why. No, it was not a happy transition. The company moved quickly, and by Christmas of 1828, I was back where I had started less than two years hence. In Virginia. Not more than 100 miles from my foster family. And yet, the communication was broken with them. I spoke not to them nor them to me. I was unaware of the depth of my foster mother's decline.
