Black Mayors Roundtable: Protecting Our Cities from Federal Overreach

Our very own Andrew Gillum hosts a town hall with Black mayors to discuss how local leaders are responding to federal actions (and inactions), and what protections cities are able to provide to their residents.

Federal law enforcement actions are ramping up within our cities, directly impacting Black and immigrant communities. Residents are looking to mayors for leadership and protection while cities face legal constraints, political pressure, and public scrutiny.

The Mayors will speak candidly about what local power truly looks like in practice, where their power starts and ends, and what strategies are currently in use.

    Guests Include:

Mayor Frank Scott of Little Rock, AR

Mayor Van Johnson of Savannah, GA

Mayor Leonardo Williams of Durham, NC

This California Sheriff Has Lost His Mind | NLP Replay

California Sheriff, and candidate for governor, Chad Bianco, is chasing clout with Republican voters by launching a phony investigation into California’s 2025 election. He’s confiscated more than 500K ballots from his own Riverside county.

California’s 2025 election saw the passage of Prop 50, which redrew electoral maps in Democrats favor. The Sheriff says the confiscated ballots will show vote-count discrepancies. More likely, all they will show is how normalized undermining democracy has become amongst Republican candidates chasing viral fame.

Join hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers, along with guest-host Cari Champion, for this segment from episode #124 that aired on 03-26-26

Cradle Snatchers, the New Norm? | MiniPod

Solange’s son Julez Smith (21) was seen in a social media post on a date with reality star Tommie Lee (41). It has revived an age-old conversation: how young is too young? Is it any different for young men dating older women than vice-versa?

It’s March MADNESS: From Basketball to Ballots

It’s March MADNESS on episode 124 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by friend-of-the-show, Cari Champion!

Cari Champion is a broadcast journalist, co-host of Flagrant and Funny with Jemele Hill, and host of NAKED with Cari Champion on Black Effect.

    FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS:

    1. Trump admonishes Congress to pass the SAVE Act, “Do it for Jesus.”
    2. Breonna Taylor’s mom criticizes DOJ’s request to dismiss charges against officers
    3. Afroman wins defamation lawsuit.
    4. Syracuse loses to UConn, Syracuse Head Coach Complains.
    5. United Airlines Announces a new ticket-level for “relax row” (it sucks)
    6. Delta Airlines suspends perks for members of Congress over airport delays

There is a connection between the manufactured chaos at our airports, Project 2025, and Trump’s efforts to manipulate the midterm elections. Far-right strategist and conspiracy-podcast host, Steph Bannon, has said the quiet part out loud: ICE is being groomed to police the polls. The viral propaganda that Bannon pushes has empowered folks like CA Sheriff Chad Bianco to pursue phony election investigations; he’s confiscated hundreds of thousands of ballots that will be used to produce more conspiracy content, and boost the sheriff’s gubernatorial campaign.

Meanwhile, Republicans struggle to pass the SAVE Act, which would curtail millions of Americans' right to vote, and the Supreme Court seems ready to put restrictions on mail-in ballots. If voting weren’t important, they wouldn’t be trying so hard to keep you from doing it!

The show ends on a lighter note, our hosts share their brackets for March Madness, college basketball.

Trump’s War on the Media | NLP Replay

This week, the “Secretary of War,” Pete Hegseth, used his platform to criticize the media’s coverage of the Iran war. He went so far as to offer rewrites of specific headlines that he disapproved of, and said that he “can’t wait” for David Ellison to take over CNN.

Billionaire David Ellison is close to Trump and recently acquired CNN (as part of the Warner Bros. Discovery deal). He is expected to make CNN’s coverage more conservative, just as he did with CBS.

Meanwhile, Trump’s FCC Chair, Brendan Carr, has threatened to pull the licenses of TV broadcasters who are critical of the Iran war.

Join hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers, along with guest Garrison Hayes, for this segment from episode #123 that aired on 03-19-26.

The Truth About Magic City Mondays | MiniPod

The Atlanta Hawks basketball team were all set to host “Magic City Monday” as part of their ongoing series highlighting cultural institutions in Atlanta. Magic City is a (much beloved) local strip club. The people of Atlanta were down for it, but apparently NBA commissioner Adam Silver was not…

Do We Have to Fight ALL of Trump’s Wars?

On episode 123 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by guest-host, Garrison Hayes.

Garrison is an NAACP-nominated journalist with the news magazine, Mother Jones. He produces short documentaries where he explores the hidden or forgotten corners of Black history, faith, and politics (and his love of books). Look him up on YouTube and social media @GarrisonHayes

    3. Mayoral Forum in D.C. Goes Sideways
    4. Illinois Senate Race, Stratton Wins the Primary
    5. Secretary of War Hegseth Criticizes Media Coverage of the Iran War

Not only did the “Secretary of War” criticize the media’s coverage of the Iran war–he offered his own rewrites of specific headlines, and said that he “can’t wait” for David Ellison to take over CNN.

Media suppression is part of Trump’s brand of heavy-handed American imperialism that has dropped even the pretense of following international law. After launching overt operations to topple regimes in Venezuela and Iran, he casually floated the idea of “taking” Cuba as well.

Wrong Target! The SAVE Act Won’t Save Us | Angela Rye SoloPod

On this week’s SoloPod, our host Angela Rye is joined by the Executive Director for the Congressional Black Caucus, Vincent Evans, to discuss the SAVE Act, and touch on the Target Boycott.

Full Fannie Lou Hamer Clip: https://www.instagram.com/reels/DCGNnm7oqZF/

Presented by Republicans as a bill to protect against non-citizens voting, the SAVE Act would disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans of their right to vote by adding additional requirements to register, like providing a birth certificate. It’s a xenophobic reinterpretation of so-called “Voter ID” laws which conservatives have pushed for decades to reduce the voting power of mostly poor and minority communities. They believe that high voter turnout in elections benefits Democrats.

The Senate is debating the SAVE act today, it’s already passed through the House.

Mandatory Disclaimer: there is no evidence of non-citizens voting at a scale large enough to impact U.S. elections.
