In today’s passage from Luke, Jesus is sharing a meal at the home of a Pharisee when a woman, described as a sinner, approaches Him. In a bold and humble act, she washes His feet with her tears and dries them with her hair. Though her actions would have been risky in that setting, Jesus uses the moment to reveal a powerful truth: those who have been forgiven much, love much. What’s remarkable is that her love and devotion are shown even before she hears His words of forgiveness.

This scene is full of courage, faith, and hope. Her desire to come to Jesus was greater than the risk she faced. What an encouragement for us today! Jesus has removed every barrier that keeps us from coming to Him. As we gather in worship, may we come just as we are, bringing whatever we carry and remain open to where the Spirit may be leading us.

We have all heard the saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” This statement is beautifully depicted by Jesus when he is asked by John and his messengers, “Are you the coming one, or should we look for another?” Jesus replies by telling them to report what they have seen and heard, pointing to the healings, the preaching, and the extraordinary outcomes—miracles—that he had accomplished so far.

This morning’s passage invites us to look more deeply at who Jesus is, even for those who think they already know him. There is always more to discover, more grace to receive, and more truth to uncover. What a joy it is to explore the depth of his love and the wonder of his works. Today’s passage is layered with significant details describing this scene where Jesus comes across a funeral procession and his engagement with the widow and her son. We are told the woman is a widow and her only son has died. Her level of loss is catastrophic, especially in this time period, and yet full of hope because of Jesus. We see such a picture of compassion where Jesus steps in, reaching out to touch the coffin (when it was considered unclean to do so) and speaking the son back to life.  

We see time and time again how Jesus was moved with compassion and mercy to action to alleviate heartache and suffering that even death can not hold him back.  As we reflect today, perhaps we can gently ask ourselves: What might Jesus be inviting me to trust Him with? Where do I need to believe that His compassion is still at work?

May this story open our hearts to hope, even in the places that feel so final.

In today’s passage, we’re invited into a powerful and personal exchange between Jesus and a centurion (and his servants), a moment that left Jesus amazed at the centurion’s faith. A faith that was confident, humble, and trusting, that it moved the heart of Jesus.

At first glance, this story might stir something uncomfortable in us. We may find ourselves comparing our faith to his and wondering if ours measures up. But instead of hearing this as a rebuke, what if we received it as an invitation? An invitation to grow. An invitation to trust more deeply. An invitation to believe that our faith, too, can be strengthened and refined.

So let’s lean in together. Let’s open our hearts to what the Lord wants to show us, trusting that He delights in growing our faith and drawing us closer to Himself.

As we continue in our series, Encountering Jesus, we come to a beautiful moment where Jesus both teaches and lives out something wonderfully new. He invites those around Him to see beyond the familiar and lift their eyes to a bigger picture of grace, to see what God is doing. He spoke in parables about garments and wineskins as he healed and his disciples ate on the Sabbath.

As we reflect on these passages together, may our hearts be open and expectant. What might the Spirit be inviting us to see? How might Jesus be shaping something new within us? Let’s lean in and discover what He longs to reveal today.

This morning’s passage beautifully reveals the heart of Jesus. He doesn’t only invite us to call Him Lord; He invites us into friendship. Jesus calls ordinary, everyday people to follow Him, to leave their own way behind, and in that calling, we find relationship, welcome, and fellowship.

On the very same day Levi responds, the story unfolds into a celebration where everyone is invited to the table — not just the religious elite of the time. What an incredible and joyful invitation that still speaks to us today. As we sit with this passage, let’s take a moment to reflect and listen for how the Spirit may be inviting us to respond.

Today’s passage invites us to an awareness of our human need at deeper levels not just to what we perceive on the surface but what will both satisfy and nourish us in mind, body, and soul. The Lord sees far beyond what we comprehend and is intentional in his care for our whole being beginning with fulfilling the need for a relationship with him and beyond. Let’s lean in together and discover more of His loving heart and faithful care for us.

As we continue our sermon series, Encountering Jesus, we dive deeper into the heart of Jesus and His forgiveness as it relates to the Mosaic Law. Today, we’ll explore how sin separates us from God and from one another and the beautiful truth that Jesus meets us in our brokenness. As the true temple and the perfect sacrifice, He opens the way for us to be welcomed back, restored in our relationship with God and reconciled to each other.

As we dive deeper into our series Encountering Jesus, we step into a powerful moment where Jesus meets Simon (and James and John!) right in the middle of their work in Luke 5.

Though they were experienced fishermen, Jesus reshapes their understanding of him and invites them into something far greater than they imagined. In that moment, Simon in particular, begins to see both who Jesus truly is and who he is in light of him. Through this story, Jesus reveals the new values of his kingdom—reshaping what it truly means.

As we continue in our series of Encountering Jesus, we’ll reflect this week on what mattered to Him. We’ll look at how Jesus spoke with authority, acted with compassion when healing the sick, and delivered people from unclean spirits all while choosing humility over fame. Though He could have sought recognition and power, Jesus chose a different path—the way of the cross.

As we begin 2026, we’re excited to start a new sermon series, Encountering Jesus. In the Gospels, people were often surprised by Jesus—his teaching, miracles, and compassion were unlike anything they expected.

Today, many assume they already know him or settle for a familiar, comfortable version. But in Luke chapters 4–7, we’re invited into real encounters with Jesus that reveal who he truly is: challenging, compassionate, and life-changing. Join us as we explore these passages together and encounter the real Jesus.
