Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell get a lesson in all things Magistrate Court from co-host attorney Eric Bland. After Myrtle Beach Pastor JP Miller files more than a dozen complaints against protesters and creators seeking Justice for Mica, we were left scratching our heads but not at all surprised. What is JP up to and why did he choose Magistrate Court, where the most damages he could win tops out at $7,500? How can the protesters/creators defend themselves?
And will Judge Christopher John Arakas — who isn’t a member of the South Carolina Bar Association and doesn’t appear to have ever been a lawyer — be fooled by JP’s claims?
For Luna Shark Premium Members, we'll discuss the Parker Law Group's questionable snowman ☃️ and how JP Miller may be attempting to use the magistrate court to harass while the legal system might not offer adequate protection to the people being sued…

Just over a year ago, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell from “True Sunlight Podcast,” watched the hit Netflix documentary “American Nightmare” about Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn, the California couple who were immediately dubbed “LIARS” by police — and the media — after reporting a home invasion and the subsequent kidnapping and rape of Denise in 2015.
Mandy and Liz were blown away by the documentary, and especially by the work of a woman named Misty Carausu. After months of being scolded and vilified in the headlines — which affected their careers and relationships — Denise and Aaron found vindication in the form of Misty, who at the time was a brand new criminal investigator from a police agency 40 miles south of where they lived. Misty wowed audiences of “American Nightmare” with her tenacity and devotion to her job. And she showed what can happen when police come from a place of BELIEVING victims instead of treating victims like suspects.
After helping investigate a home invasion in her jurisdiction, Misty discovered a connection between the suspect in her case and Denise and Aaron’s case, proving that Denise and Aaron were telling the truth all along. Today, we're diving deeper to discover more beneath the surface of this harrowing story and how we can inspire more women like Misty to Protect and Serve.

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell and attorney Eric Bland talk about the horrors of the Los Angeles wildfires and how Big Insurance, as well as systemic failures in government preparation have made a catastrophic situation even worse.
Closer to home, the three talk about the success of Luna Shark's billboard blitz in the hopes of seeking answers in the Stephen Smith case (not to mention Sandy Smith’s decision to increase the reward to $50,000 for information leading to arrests in her son’s murder case).
Also on the show, a federal jury found Cory Fleming liable for his part in Alex Murdaugh’s scheme to steal millions from Gloria Satterfield’s family, but is HE the biggest loser to emerge from the Nautilus trial? Or did the insurance company waste untold amounts of time and money in launching an easily predictable losing battle over something that may ultimately be their own fault?
Plus, the latest in the Mica Francis case: Emails and texts show that JP MIller — and his right hand woman Tricia Ross — accused an Horry County Police Department officer of being at fault for Mica’s death. AND Wayne Miller’s odd real estate connection to Mica’s divorce attorney Regina Ward — who also represented Mica’s family in the fight over who would be personal representative for Mica.

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and attorney Eric Bland — are BACK and ready to take on the New Year.
This 112th episode of COJ covers a range of topics, starting with a look back at the holidays. Premium members get a special discussion on Liz's snow day adventures, Mandy's aversion to winter, and Eric's past commuting woes in Philadelphia…and we’ll touch on the dangers of public transportation in New York.
This week Alex Murdaugh’s best friend and co-conspirator Cory Fleming is back in federal court for the Nautilus case … but why? What defense could he possibly offer the insurance company that says Alex and Cory swindled them out of $3.8 million in the Satterfield scheme? Last week, Alex ended Nautilus’ claim against him with a confession of judgment worth $14.8 million … meaning, things could get really bad for Cory. And yet he’s still going for it. We also delve into the confusing aspects of the case, such as the role of the insurance companies and their handling of the initial claim and the potential for other co-conspirators to be revealed, especially if Cory Fleming or Alex Murdaugh provides testimony.
Finally, the hosts shift gears to discuss the controversy surrounding Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, including Lively's initial complaint and Baldoni's defamation lawsuit. We’ll dive into where the three land on who “the bad guy” is here.
Plus, Sandy Smith plans to increase the reward in the search for her son’s killers as more people take notice of the Stephen Smith billboards that LUNASHARK has funded throughout South Carolina. More to come on that and a new event planned for July soon so stay tuned!

Live from Hollywood! This week attorney Eric Bland asks investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell about their visit to to 'La La Land' and the writers’ room of Hulu’s upcoming scripted series based on the Murdaugh Murders Podcast.
As always, there was a lot to talk about (including Eric’s connection to the Luigi Mangione case?!). Last week, Alex Murdaugh filed a 132-page initial brief for his consolidated appeal in front of the South Carolina Supreme Court and … it’s A LOT. Team Murdaugh went full Team Misdirection and added a number of new grievances while leaving out a lot of old context (no surprise there). Mandy, Liz and Eric talk about Alex’s chances at getting a new trial and what his latest strategy seems to be.
Also on the show, the first prison photo of Cory Fleming has emerged and, let’s just say, Hot Summer Cory is officially over. Accountability is coming in all forms…

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and attorney Eric Bland — discuss the first post-prison court appearance of Alex Murdaugh’s alleged co-conspirator Russell Laffitte. On Monday, Russell was looking like a different and defeated man when his whiny attorneys — Mark Moore and state Rep. Todd Rutherford — tried to postpone his state court date to “Never” and asked the court to unfreeze his $10 million to $12 million (!) fortune so they can get paid.
The biggest news to come out of the courtroom Monday was that Russell could end up having THREE state trials, in addition to his federal one.
Also on the show, Mandy, Liz and Eric talk about the arrest of Luigi Mangione — aka the alleged “CEO Assassin” — and his unlikely (and questionable) rise to folk hero. The murder of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson has led to a cultural shift, where people took to social media to share their horror stories with health insurance companies. Will that conversation stop now that an arrest has been made?

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell sit down with Amanda Knox to talk about true crime, journalism, media ethics and finding clarity in a world where facts aren’t enough to persuade someone of the truth.
In 2007, Seattle resident Amanda Knox was a 20-year-old studying abroad in Perugia, Italy, when the worst happened: A man broke into the apartment she shared with three other women and brutally raped and murdered her roommate: British student Meredith Kercher. The town’s unscrupulous police agency immediately — and wrongly — put all their energy into making Amanda into a suspect no matter how many times the evidence told them otherwise. To make matters worse, they colluded with a tabloid reporter to paint Amanda out to be a “femme fatale” and fed the reporter made-up stories about what happened the night of Meredith’s murder. And the public was only too happy to take part in the resulting frenzy that was almost entirely born out of these men’s sexual fantasies about Amanda.
Though she’s since been acquitted on appeal and completely exonerated by Italy’s high court, Amanda continues to grapple with backlash from those who have trouble accepting her innocence. But her focus isn’t on them. It’s on finding clarity amid the chaos and the injustice. Amanda, who is now a journalist, hosts the “Labyrinths” podcast with her husband, author and poet Chris Robinson. She is a mom of two, an author and an advocate for the wrongfully accused. Her latest book, “Free: My Search for Meaning” is available for pre-sale and will be released in March 2025. Her book Waiting To Be Heard, a NYT best seller, tells the full story of her harrowing ordeal in Italy—a labyrinthine nightmare of crime and punishment, innocence and vindication—and of the unwavering support of family and friends who tirelessly worked to help her win her freedom.
Between 2007 and 2015, she spent nearly four years in an Italian prison and eight years on trial for a murder she didn’t commit. She has since become an advocate for criminal justice reform and media ethics. She sits on the advisory council for the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice and serves as an Innocence Network Ambassador.

After Alex Murdaugh’s banker buddy Russell Laffitte was given a new trial, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and attorney Eric Bland — take a look at what went into the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision to vacate the conviction of Alex Murdaugh’s banker buddy Russell Laffitte and discuss what they expect to see in the future. When will Russell’s retrial be held? Will Judge Richard Gergel — whose error led to this mess — still be the judge in the case? And what does this mean for the victims?
Also on the show, the Egg Lady Juror asks the court to reconsider her request to be part of Alex’s murder conviction appeal.
Plus, Mandy, Liz and Eric start their preparations for the Lee Gilley case in Houston, Texas. Lee — who originally told police that his wife died by suicide, according to reports — has been charged with capital murder for the strangulation death of Christa Bauer Gilley, who was nine weeks pregnant at the time. This past week, we broke the news that Lee had hired Dick DeGuerin to be the lead attorney on his defense team. Dick — much like another Dick we know — has a reputation that precedes him, and not just because of his reported skills in the courtroom. Dick DeGuerin has represented the likes of David Koresh and — of all people — Robert Durst, who famously confessed to three murders during the making of the docuseries “The Jinx.”

On today's episode, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and attorney Eric Bland — talk about yet another piece of good news in the Mica Francis case: Her husband JP Miller’s arrest... After months of squaring off with protesters outside his (now closed) church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — and just one week after the FBI raided his house — JP Miller lost his cool in public and was arrested for third-degree assault and battery. Why? Because a woman said “Here, Kitty Kitty” to him.
Also on the show, Colleton County Sheriff’s Office loses key evidence, leading to the exoneration of Craig Lewis, a man accused of raping, beating and burning his wife to death. Was it corruption or incompetence?
Plus, all heck broke loose in the Lowcountry last week when 43 young female macaque monkeys escaped a lab right in the heart of Murdaugh Country. Monkeys, you say? Didn’t the Egg Lady Juror work on a monkey farm? She sure did. And she’s not the only Murdaugh connection to the story.
