Greeting a New Decade (Comb Ridge, Utah)

At sunset on the eve of her 50th birthday, CMarie hikes up a slickrock ridge with her dog Carhartt. She passes petroglyphs, and cottonwoods, and at the top of the ridge, as the sun disappears over the mountains, she slips on a red evening gown. The light soaks into her hair and skin, and CMarie greets a new decade.

This episode takes place on Navajo, Pueblo, and Ute homelands.

The Eyes of Ancestors (Payette National Forest, Idaho)

Leaning against a ponderosa on a ridgeline, CMarie watches a storm roll in. CMarie knows this storm, this nature, has something to teach her. The flowers on the mountainside opposite look like eyes; like the eyes of her ancestors, asking her to learn from and fight for nature.

Elk Song (Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado)

On a late afternoon in autumn, when the sun bends the shadows and gives a gold tip to the crowns of Doug fir and lodgepole, CMarie Fuhrman walks into the forest with her cello. Playing for the first time in years, her mind drifts to the ancient death of a robin, the recent death of an elk, the way humans play guns and cellos both.

This episode takes place on Cheyenne and Arapahoe homelands.

    Welcome to Terra Firma

Terra Firma is a new podcast that combines writing about nature with the sounds of the outdoors.

It鈥檚 hosted by CMarie Fuhrman 鈥 a writer, a poet, an educator, an indigenous woman. Each episode pairs CMarie鈥檚 writing with recordings by Jacob Job. He鈥檚 a conservationist, an educator, a man very concerned with protecting wild places and with sound.

The sounds in Terra Firma come from places like Buena Vista, Colorado, and a snowy field in late December. Or to Bluff, Utah at the top of Comb Ridge. Or the Payette River in Idaho.

It鈥檚 a podcast for those who cannot leave their home, or don鈥檛 have the time or access to these places. Take a walk up a mountain, or sit with me beside a river or be CMarie鈥檚 companion in these wild places.

Terra Firma from Colorado Public Radio arrives on January 25th. Find it on your favorite podcast app. And don't miss an episode.
