E278: Your Healthy Summer Routine Is Ruining Your Progesterone And Making Periods Worse

Are you going to feel good all summer, or hit August wondering why you became a different person from the neck up?

Summer always feels like the healthiest (and happiest) season - lighter food, a few drinks at the barbecue, more movement, sunshine, a slower pace. So why do so many women feel worse in July and August than any other time of year?

Turns out, summer is one of the sneakiest seasons for progesterone. It’s because everything you do looks completely right and healthy, but the habits that look the most innocent are the ones that cause harm.

And your body keeps a running tab. So by mid-July, it starts sending you the bill, in the form of PMS that's crept back, mood swings you thought you'd fixed, and that specific kind of exhaustion that no amount of sleep seems to touch.

I’d like you to know: this is not a willpower problem. Your body is just running on less safety than it needs to make progesterone, and it's been doing that since May.

    Here's what we get into:

    • The summer-specific breakfast habit that feels like a healthy upgrade but spikes your cortisol every single morning (yes, even the organic macro-balanced version)
    • Why your luteal phase in July and August is almost always the worst of the year, and the one thing that actually protects it
    • What GLP-1s and rapid summer weight loss do to your estrogen and progesterone, and what to watch for if this is you (or your friend)

No one is telling you to skip the barbecue or eat a hot breakfast in a heatwave. This is an honest conversation that helps you actually feel good when August gets here, instead of just surviving it.

If you've ever looked at your calendar in September and thought, "Okay, now I actually have to fix myself," this episode is for you. Because the fix is a lot simpler than a full reset, and it starts right now, in June, before compounding even has a chance to happen.

Pop it on while you're making dinner tonight. It's about 20 minutes, and it might be the most useful thing you'll listen to all summer.

E277: Why Antihistamines Can Help PMS/PMDD + Functional Alternatives

Have you done all the right things and still spent two weeks a month feeling like a completely different, much less pleasant person? I get it.

Most PMS and PMDD conversations stop at estrogen and progesterone. But if you're still dealing with mood swings, brain fog, or symptoms that show up around ovulation, too, there's a piece nobody's named for you yet. It's histamine.

And before you say, "I don't have allergies" - that's not what we're talking about here. In this episode, I'm walking you through why histamine can be a very real driver of your hormonal symptoms, why it tends to spike at two specific points in your cycle, and what's actually going on underneath that your body has been trying to flag.

    You'll learn:

    • The estrogen-histamine feedback loop that makes symptoms spike at two points in your cycle, including mid-cycle, when you're supposed to feel good
    • The specific signs that point to histamine as a contributing factor in your PMS/ PMDD
    • Why supplements like DAO enzyme or Quercetin can help temporarily, and what the real question is that nobody's asking

If histamine has never once crossed your mind as a reason you feel terrible two weeks out of the month - buckle up, because this episode is about to make a lot of things click.

And if you're currently tracking your basal body temperatures and your PMS is still not where you want it to be, I have something for a few of you at the end of this episode. Stay all the way through, you'll want to hear it.

E276: Is PMS/PMDD Slowly Destroying Your Marriage? Here's What You Need to Know to Make it Stop.

Have you ever looked at your husband doing absolutely nothing wrong and felt nothing but irritation?

You know it's not really about him. But knowing that doesn't help when you're already in it, snapping at him for breathing too loudly, or crying and unable to explain why, then drowning in guilt afterward. Because you love him. Your hormones are throwing a very convincing party in your nervous system, and nobody sent you the invite.

Here's what this episode breaks down for you:

    • Why your brain is literally in threat mode before your period, and why small things feel like actual emergencies
    • The serotonin and dopamine piece nobody explains, including why you can't feel satisfied even when he's doing everything right
    • How cortisol piles on and why doing more actually makes the second half of your cycle harder, not easier

This episode won't tell you to just "track your cycle and eat more greens". It will give you actual context for what your body is doing - and more importantly, what it's trying to do - so that the next time you're in that phase and you feel like a completely different person, you have some language for it. Not just "sorry, PMS," but a real understanding of why your brain is scanning for danger in a safe marriage.

If you're a husband reading this: this one's for you too. It will help you understand what's happening on a brain and hormone level so you can stop taking it personally (as hard as that is) and start working together on it.

E275: Your Labs Are Normal, But You're Gaining Weight, Losing Hair, And Feeling Exhausted - Let's Talk Thyroid, With Dr. Amie Hornaman

Have you ever left a doctor’s appointment feeling like something's off, even when told, “everything looks fine”?

That's exactly where my guest, Dr. Amie Hornaman, started. At 22, despite eating clean and working out twice daily, she gained 40 pounds in three months. After seeing six doctors, including two endocrinologists, she was still told she was normal. But no one had properly tested her THYROID.

So, we went deep into the stuff most doctors overlook:

    • Why your thyroid impacts progesterone, which could explain brutal PMS
    • The full marker panel you need, including a test to see if your thyroid hormone is even making it into your cells
    • Insights on postpartum, fertility, and what nobody tells you before you try to conceive. Dr. Amie gets personal about why getting your thyroid right before pregnancy is crucial

There are cycle symptoms that can indicate thyroid dysfunction before you ever get a diagnosis. A lot of women spend years cycling through diagnoses, being told their labs are normal, when nobody has run the right tests yet. Normal isn't the goal. Optimal is.

If you've ever felt “something is off” despite normal test results, this episode is the one you send to your doctor.

E274: You’re Doing Everything Right - So Why Do You Feel Like A Different Person Half The Month?

Do you ever feel like you have two completely different versions of yourself living in the same body?

Like one half of the month, you’re calm, patient, productive, and enjoying your life.
And then something shifts. Suddenly, you’re overwhelmed, snapping over small things, exhausted by the afternoon, and wondering where you went.

And what makes it even more confusing is - you’re not careless about your health. You eat well, take care of yourself, you’re paying attention… And it still keeps happening.

I wanted to sit down and really talk this through, because this pattern isn’t random, and it’s not you “failing” every month.

In this episode, I get into:

    • What’s going on behind the scenes in your brain and body when that shift hits (and why it can feel so intense, so fast)
    • How constantly adding more (supplements, routines, pressure...) can quietly pile onto the problem
    • The piece most high-functioning women miss: how constant “go mode” and stress start working against your hormones

This is one of those conversations where you might feel a little called out, but also a little relieved. You’ll realize that you’re not doing it wrong. It’s just that your body’s been working hard to keep up with everything you’re asking of it.

Press play; your “week before your period” self might have notes.

E273: BONUS - Still Breaking Out Every Month? What You’re Missing About Hormones, Gut & Skincare And How To Fix What’s Underneath, With Danielle Gronich

Are you doing all the “right” things for your skin, and still breaking out every single month?

You know, like using clean products, improving your diet, maybe even trying some supplements, but somehow your skin doesn’t get the message.

I wanted to bring this one back because it’s one of those older episodes that’s still so relevant, especially if you’ve been stuck in that loop of trying things, seeing a bit of progress, and then ending up right back where you started.

I’m talking with Danielle Gronich (the Acne Guru and founder of Clearstem), and we go way beyond “just use this product.” Because most of the time, it’s not just one thing that’s causing the issue; it’s how all the pieces are (not) working together.

    We get into:

    • Why some clean skincare products might still be clogging your pores (this one catches a lot of women off guard)
    • What those same-time-every-month breakouts can be pointing to in your body
    • The gaps that often get missed when you’re doing a lot right, but still not seeing clear skin

This conversation might help you see that you’ve been on the right track, but maybe not in a way that your body needs. So, if you feel like nothing has worked for you so far, give this a listen. And don’t be surprised if you start questioning your bathroom shelf after!

E272: Why Estrogen Won't Leave Your Body - And What's Actually Keeping It There

If you've been told your hormone labs are normal but you still feel bloated, moody, and exhausted - this episode is for you.

Estrogen dominance is one of the most common hormone disruptions in women, and it's also one of the most misunderstood. Most women have heard the term but don't actually know what's driving it in their body, or why conventional testing keeps missing it entirely.

In this episode, I'll walk you through exactly why estrogen builds up in the body, what's blocking it from leaving, and why creating safety in your body is the long-term key to getting your hormones back in balance.

What you'll learn in this episode:

    • What estrogen dominance actually means, and the two ways it can show up in your body
    • The difference between making too much estrogen vs. not detoxing estrogen well (and why this matters for how you approach it)
    • The three exits estrogen needs to leave your body: liver, gut, and stress hormones
    • Why an overburdened liver is often the first place to look
    • The gut-estrogen connection
    • How chronic stress shuts down your detox organs by signaling to your body that it's not safe, and why this is the piece most practitioners miss
    • Why doing more - more protocols, more supplements, more detoxes - doesn't fix this long term
    • Symptoms that may point to estrogen dominance: PMS, mood swings, painful or heavy periods, clotty periods, irregular cycles, breast tenderness, acne, bloating, anxiety, and irregular ovulation

Why your labs keep coming back "normal":

Conventional blood testing gives you one snapshot of one estrogen number on one day of your cycle. It doesn't show how estrogen is being made, broken down, or cleared. The Dutch test looks at estrogen metabolites - the actual pathway estrogen is moving through your body - which is how you find out whether this is a production problem, a detox problem, or both.

E271: PMS Breast Pain/Tenderness Is Giving You So Many Clues About Your Hormones!

Can we talk about that moment right before your period when your boobs hurt so much you don’t even want to move, and then suddenly, they’re fine?

I used to just ignore it. Like, okay, this is just part of PMS, whatever. But once I started paying attention, I realized it’s actually not random at all.

It’s your body giving you a lot of clues about what’s going on with your hormones, your gut, your stress levels, and even how your body is handling everyday life.

    In this episode, you’ll hear:

    • What that super sore → suddenly fine pattern is actually telling you about estrogen vs. progesterone
    • The kind of everyday habits that seem harmless, but quietly build up over your cycle
    • Why your gut, liver, and even how often you go to the bathroom play a bigger role than you think

There’s something important here that many of you overlook: you're managing symptoms instead of the root issue. And that’s the key difference. Next time, you can either ignore it or take the opportunity to understand it.

Go listen and see what I mean.

E270: Why High-Functioning Women Aren't Having Great Sex (and What to Fix) with Dr. Heather Rhodes

Have you ever caught yourself thinking “I could take it or leave it” when it comes to sex?

This is your headphones warning episode. My friend, Dr. Heather Rhodes, is back with me, and we’re talking about something you might not be saying out loud - what happens when desire feels out of reach. You love your husband, you care about your marriage, and at the same time, you feel tired out, stuck in your head, or just not that interested.

And it’s so confusing, because on paper, everything looks fine. But inside, there’s tension. Your mind is always running, and your body feels a step behind.

It’s incredible how tiny habits can slowly drain that spark without us even being aware. One minute, everything is exciting and fresh, and the next, it can feel flat and distant.

    In this episode, you’ll hear:

    • Why being in your head all the time can shut down your desire, and how to start shifting that
    • How negativity, unspoken tension, and resentment can hurt your connections more than you realize
    • What if your low libido has nothing to do with your hormones

And yes, some parts of this one may have you staring into space for a minute. So, put your headphones in and come listen before you add “fix libido” to another mental to-do list.

That’s why I wanted to do something a little different in this episode.

Instead of talking about more things to add, I’m sharing a few simple and free things I would focus on if I were starting over with my hormones today. Honestly, these are still some of the things I come back to in my own life because they truly make a difference when you stay consistent with them.

None of them is flashy. Some might even sound almost too basic.

But those are often the things we skip over, even though they’re the ones that matter most.

    We’re talking about:

    • The habit of saying “I don’t know” about your body, and how that keeps you disconnected
    • Why food — especially breakfast — still matters more than most women realize, even when you’re “eating healthy”
    • How social media, screens, and light exposure can impact your hormones in ways we don’t always connect
    • And something I don’t talk about all the time here: the spiritual side of healing

Because sometimes it’s not only about what you’re doing physically. Sometimes it’s about what you’re carrying emotionally, what you’re speaking over yourself, and whether you’ve actually created space for your body to slow down and feel safe.

This one is gentle, practical, and a little deeper than usual. If something in this episode hits a tender spot, don’t rush past it, sit with it for a minute and see what comes up.

E268: The #1 Mistake Healthy Moms Make That Keeps Them Stuck in PMS & Burnout

Do you ever feel like you should have your hormones figured out by now, but something still isn’t clicking? As high-functioning women, we fall into this trap all the time. You pay attention to what you're eating, try different routines, and when results don’t come quickly, your instinct is to push harder. You tell yourself to try one more thing or be more disciplined, thinking it will finally work.

But it doesn't. And it won't if you stay in this mindset.

It's because hormones aren't the problem here. They are only responding to what’s going on in your body and your life. So, if you’re not feeling safe inside and out, you will never be able to fix them.

    You’ll hear:

    • The “try harder” pattern that keeps you in burnout and PMS
    • Why doing more can make your symptoms worse
    • What shifting toward safety can look like in real life

If you’ve been in that loop of trying, burning out, and starting again, you’ll recognize yourself in this. Just notice what stands out, and start there, even if it’s something small.
