Shot Dead and Acquitted - The Jessica Lall Case | 1999 |1/2

In 1999, Jessica Lall was shot twice at a crowded party in Delhi, in front of dozens of witnesses, at point-blank range, over the simple fact that the bar was closed and she wouldn't serve him anymore drinks.

On its surface, this should have been one of the most straightforward murder cases in Indian legal history. But what transpired would bewilder and enrage an entire nation; because the man accused of pulling the trigger somehow managed to leave the court a free man.

What should have been straightforward justice was instead dragged out over the course of seven long years, all unravelling in a tangled mess involving nearly 300 witnesses, conflicting testimonies, and missing evidence. And how a city that watched the murder happen refused to let the acquittal be the end of the story.

This is the case of Jessica Lall — and the verdict that wouldn't stick.

Part 1: We explore into the events of the fateful night where Jessica Lall was shot, and the initial confusion that led to her shooter's acquittal.

Part 2: We follow the public outcry from the court's decision, which culminated in public campaigns and rallies, and the resulting outcome of this miscarriage of justice.

    Thailand's Jack The Ripper | Somkid Pumpuang | 2005

The officer who arrested him warned everyone that there would be more victims, but no one bothered to listen. In 2005, Somkid Pumpuang was taken in as the main suspect behind 5 murders. But when faced with the charges, he did not resist, and even outright confessed to the crimes, which led him to receive a life sentence instead of death.

However, what happened inside prison would be even more remarkable. Somkid became a model prisoner, so much so that his conduct earned him promotions up the prisoner classes, which resulted in his sentence being shrank 4 times. At the end, he had reduced his sentence so much that he was even able to leave a free man after 14 years. A 14 year sentence for a man who was charged with murdering 5 women.

But just as a leopard never changes its spots, a brutal criminal doesn't magically become a saint, not even after spending 14 years in jail. And it would only take 7 months for his original arresting officer to be proven right.

They Killed Him Within Police Headquarters | 2016 |2/2

In October 2016, a South Korean businessman named Jee Ick-Joo was forcefully taken from his home in Angeles City, only for him to never be seen again. From the outside, this seemed like a brutal case of kidnapping, or maybe even a targeted attack from business rivals.

But what made this murder more chilling wasn't how Jee was abducted or killed, but the fact that it took place within Camp Crame; the National Police Headquarters of the Philippines. Because this was the bloody era of President Duterte's anti-drug campaign, and once they have you on their list, you may never come home again.

Part 1: We explore circumstances surrounding the Philippines in the Duterte era, and why anti-drug officers specifically targeted Jee Ick-Joo.

Part 2: We follow the public fallout once the case was made public, and navigate the tricky legal battle to bring justice to an innocent man who was abducted and murdered by the police.

The Man Who Stole Boys From The Streets | Baekuni "Babe" | 2010 | 2/2

Beneath the noise of Jakarta's terminals and back alleys, a street vendor named Baekuni built a reputation for kindness; offering food, shelter, and quiet protection to the city's most invisible children. And for nearly seventeen years, that reputation served as the perfect disguise... until his true horrors were brought to the surface.

The country was shocked when the mutilated remains of a young boy was discovered in 2010, leading investigators to uncover a disturbing pattern of exploitation and violence that had gone on for far too long.

Part 1: We explore the conditions that allowed Baekuni "Babe" to develop into the monster that he would eventually become, and how he managed to remain undetected through nearly 2 decades.

Part 2: We follow investigators as they pick up on the discovery of the young boy's mutilated body parts, and witness Indonesia reckon with the fact that they allowed such a monster to roam their streets for so long.

54 Days: The Ngọc Bích Gold Shop Slaughter | Lê Văn Luyện | 2011 | 2/2

It was already morning when neighbors in Bắc Giang province noticed something wrong. The shutters to the local family owned gold shop hadn't gone up. No one had seen the owner make his usual rounds. And when someone finally forced their way in, they found a scene that would haunt the nation for years: a husband, a wife, and even their infant daughter, all slaughtered.

And in another room, an eight-year-old girl, barely breathing, her arm severed at the joint. She was the only witness. She was also, somehow, still alive.

Part 1: We take you through the horrific events of the Ngọc Bích gold shop slaughter as it unfolded, and profile the monster behind the brutal crime.

Part 2: We follow along with officers as they trace down the murderer, Lê Văn Luyện. Along the way, we'll also discover the complications that arguably prevented commensurate justice from being served in this case.

The Women The War Forgot - The Comfort Women | Heinous History | 1937

When Japan surrendered on the 15th of August, 1945, the world called an end to its most brutal chapter in history. Flags were lowered. Peace treaties were signed. Everyone just wanted to move on.

But nobody told the comfort women.

For years during the war, while men braved the frontlines, hundreds of thousands of women were abducted from their homes and their villages; enslaved into camps and forced to satisfy the needs of passing soldiers. Many died of disease and malnutrition, while others were killed for trying to escape. And what made it even more chilling was how bureaucratic it all was, from the kidnapping and the enslavement, to even accounting for the fees collected for each sexual encounter. And yet when the war ended, the soldiers simply left, and the women, those who actually managed to survive the atrocities, were left to deal with their trauma on their own.

In this episode, we trace the architecture of the comfort women system: who constructed it, who enforced it, and who was paid to look the other way. And we hear from the women who waited sixty years to say out loud what everyone already knew.

The world tried to forget about them and move on.

So they had no choice but to make the world remember.

    The Taipei Subway Killer | Cheng Chieh | 2014 | 2/2

It was 4:25pm on a Wednesday afternoon in Taipei. Commuters, students, strangers were on board a train on the Bannan line heading west to Jiangzicui from Longshan Temple; the longest gap between any two stations on the entire Taipei Metro network.

To anyone else, this detail wouldn't mean much, but Cheng Chieh had pondered over this for years. Later, he even revealed to investigators that he chose that specific stretch precisely because he knew it would give him more time.

And twenty seconds after leaving the Longshan Temple station, he pulled out a knife.

Passengers flooded out of the carriage when the train finally pulled into Jiangzicui, screaming for people on the platform to run. Four people were dead. Twenty-four were injured. It was the first fatal attack on the Taipei Metro since the day it opened.

Cheng Chieh was only twenty-one years old. And he had been planning this attach since childhood.

Part 1: We examine Cheng Chieh's troubled background and the conditions that led him to the attack in May of 2014.

Part 2: We dig into the fallout following Cheng Chieh's horrific metro attack, as well as the shocking revelations uncovered during his murder trial.
