Nerd of Mouth

The Last Podcast Network

The Nerds got their Revenge, now what? That’s what comedians Holden McNeely, Mike Lawrence, and Jake Young are trying to figure out in the weekly combination tribunal/confessional “Nerd of Mouth.” Recorded from the dankest basement in the “Last Podcast on the Left” studios, we’re getting to the bottom of whether there’s more to life than any% WR videogame speedruns, limited edition action figures, and anime shows about ludicrously strong children beating each other up. Theme song by Grant Gordon, logo by Andy Kluthe. Subscribe to SiriusXM Podcasts+ to listen to new episodes of Nerd of Mouth ad-free. The Trial of Nintendo

Nintendo, the company we grew up with and loved for it's cute characters and intuitive gameplay will now tell you "Hey Nintendon't mod your system or we'll brick the damn thing". Has Nintendo gotten more litigious or is it baked into their DNA like mute protagonists and Italian Stereotypes? Holden is the prosecutor, Jake the defender (it is a Japanese company after all), and Mike the judge (sadly there is no Mike Judge in this episode) as we put Nintendo on trial to see whether this is a company that has turned on its fans or just protecting the brand like any good, successful company will do. And yes, Nintendo is a very good, successful company (please don't sue us).

    An MCU Villains tier list

We ranked the MCU Avengers and you seemed to like that enough to fill us with enough delusions of grandeur to rank the colorful (often green or gray) bad guys of the MCU. We're talking everyone from Abomination to Zemo! Every character is beloved by someone which is the only way you can justify Jake sticking up for Kaecilius, Mike rewatching Iron Man 2 repeatedly to slobber all over Justin's Hammer, and Holden's undying love of Norman Osborn. Actually that last one makes sense, it's Willem Dafoe. He rules. Agree with us or disagree with us on Ultron's eyes and let us know if you think the real villain is our awful opinions!

    ACTION FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING

With the holiday season upon us it's time to talk about some of the toys that break us! Mike, the one of the three who has not resisted the temptation of plastic crack makes more than a few articulated points on what it's like to be a modern action figure collector, when it feels fun and when it just feels like an episode of My Strange Addiction. What's a Build a figure or an army builder? What makes a chase variant worth tracking down? And of course, because it will excite one specifically weird person: action figure crotch talk!!

Videogame Journalism Part 2: Elegic Boogaloo with Mike Drucker

Video game magazines came and then the internet delivered a killshot and dropped a giant bomb on video game journalism. Holden walks us through the journey of how it all started pure before the corporate overlords did the thing they do of taking over and firing lots of decent people, and where that leaves us now. Guest Mike Drucker (Author of Good Game, No Rematch) joins with his own personal perspective on all of it. If you were wondering when we’d get to the interoffice politics of Kotaku.com, you’ll love this episode.

An Elegy For Video Game Magazines

Remember when you’d spend your allowance on some grainy photos of Castlevania IV and trust a cartoon frog to tell you which console to buy? There were tips and also tricks in the same place! We sure do and will go over all the Gamepros and cons from the heyday of video game magazines. How did they start? Why did they die? And shockingly, which one is still being published today?!

    Batman's Bat God Crisis

How does a street level vigilante turn into a meme of a character that can do anything and beat anyone? It takes time, popularity, Grant Morrison, and casually sacrificing the rest of the DC universe (Some with just one punch!) to give us the omnipotent version of Batman that could beat anyone with some prep time and a trust fund. And who cares if some people balk at how OP ol' Brucie is, the stories are dope and yeah, we should all have contingency plans to stop Aquaman. This is the episode on Batman you both need and deserve.

    A Jaunt Through Various Haunts

We conclude spooky season (To be fair it's been a pretty damn spooky year) with a history of haunted house attractions. Holden takes us all the way back to when haunts started with Ancient Greece and through some Dark Ages, some not so Dark Ages, and the Great Depression when creepily yelling at people for fun started becoming the art form it is today! Then Jake talks about theme park horror attractions like Halloween Horror Nights and Knotts Scary farm. And finally Mike takes us home talking about the lunatic fringes (emphasis on the lunatics) that have tried to take haunted houses to the extreme and what happens when an art form loses its art and just turns into a guy named Russ torturing people. It's always a guy named Russ, isn't it?

    Horror In Video Games

The hills are silent with the bloodcurdling sound of our voices as we talk about the origins, the fall, and resurgence of horror in video games. If you played it with the lights off and it wasn't Leisure Suit Larry chances are we give it it's due this episode, everything from Alien: Isolation to Zombies Ate My Neighbors. And Resident Evil. Lots of Resident Evil.

The History of Cheating in Video-Games

Aim lock yourself in a room and listen as Holden goes through the entire history of cheating in video games and discusses the different kinds of cheating that happen. This one gets deep into tech talk but also the moral dilemma we all face when we ask if cheating is okay if it makes a game more fun (yes it is and yes it does) and when does it all go too far?

    2025: The Year Anime won

Anime is demon slaying the box office right now and all it had to do was…just be itself? Jake explains how we got to this golden moment and how to sustain it. This one’s got Nepalese politics, Japanese economics, and poop jokes for some reason. Well there’s a reason, you just have to listen.
