The Consult is a true crime podcast that examines behavior exhibited before, during, and after the commission of a criminal act. Consultants are retired FBI profilers who worked the cases.
Retired FBI agent Geoffrey Kelly, the longtime case agent on the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist—the largest art theft in history—joins the show. Geoff spent more than two decades investigating the case and is the author of Thirteen Perfect Fugitives, which examines the FBI’s investigation into the heist and is scheduled for release on March 10, 2026.
We walk through the known facts of the crime, analyze the behavior of the offenders and what it suggests about who they were, and discuss Geoff’s theory of responsibility, including where the stolen paintings may be today.

We examine the concept of targeted violence (e.g., mass attacks, school shootings, lone-actor attacks, assassinations) and how it differs from spontaneous or impulsive acts of violence. We discuss the warning signs, motivations, and pathways that may precede these crimes. The focus is on understanding behavior with the goal of improving prevention, threat assessment, and investigative insight.

In this episode, we examine the independent review of Philadelphia MEO case 11-0420, involving the death of Ellen Greenberg. We share our initial thoughts on the report and its conclusions. In Part 2 of our analysis of The Murders of Dr. and Mrs. Littlefield in South Paris, Maine, we turn to Paul Dwyer’s final confession in which he directly implicated Deputy Sheriff Francis Carroll in the murders. This statement dramatically reframes the case and forces a re-evaluation of Dwyer’s role in these crimes. Part 2 of 2.

In part 1 of our analysis of The Murders of Dr. and Mrs. Littlefield, we examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Dr. James Littlefield and his wife, Lydia, in 1937. Their bodies were discovered in their car in North Arlington, New Jersey, far from their home in South Paris, Maine, with 18-year-old Paul Dwyer at the wheel. The discovery launched an investigation that raised questions which persist to this day. Subsequent proceedings introduced competing explanations for the murders. One theory holds that Dwyer acted alone. Another contends that Deputy Sheriff Francis Carroll was the primary offender, with Dwyer forced to assist in covering up the crime. We try to answer what most likely happened. Part 1 of 2.
