The Craft Brewers' Creative

Jenna Steele

Craft Brewing is often described as an art - however, the podcasts/blogs/sites etc. that discuss this don’t pay a ton of attention to the actual artwork and visual aspects of the industry! I love cool can art! And I want to talk about it with brewers/artists and others within the Craft Brewing space.

Branding With Brandon: The Talented Brandon Wilson Creative

To round off 2021 and season 1 of The craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is chatting to branding expert and designer of the podcast logo, Brandon Wilson. Find out about what goes into branding your favorite beers and how important the can is to telling the story of a brewery.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The can is the brand's opportunity to sell itself to you. When you go to the store you see so many different choices and you can only go with what it says on the can. They need to tell you not just how the beer tastes, but what their story is. Why should you choose their citrus IPA over the one sitting next to it on the shelf.
    • Changing your can design can be risky, what if the people who usually buy it don't recognize it with a new can. That's why you don't see many staple brands change their look too much.
    • Brandon has a rule of three where he likes to have three strong ideas and pits them off against each other to become a final design.
    • The color scheme of a can should be representative of what's inside. A light summery drink should have light or bright colors whereas a dark stout with rich flavors should have bold and dark and heavy colors.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I'd rather my favorite beers be designed well and be inspiring'

‘The basil wasn't for taste, it was for the aroma'

‘It's an expensive product and you're damn well right they're going to make their packaging feel great'

    ABOUT THE HOST

Jenna Steele fell in love with the craft beer industry while studying hospitality at Cornell University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Hotel Administration. In one of her courses, she was able to try countless craft beers, from across the US, in every style. Though the beer was good, the can art stood out. She wanted to know more about how the cans came to be.

Jenna's love for craft beer is primarily due to beers and breweries' creative and visual elements. Got cool can designs? Heck yeah.

After working in finance for a couple of years, Jenna returned to her love of craft beer. She wanted to hear the stories behind can names and designs, brewers' backgrounds, breweries, and hear from label artists themselves. So, she took it upon herself to start The Craft Brewers' Creative under her Craft brand, Beer Can Lover.

On The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna interviews brewers, graphic designers, marketing managers, creative directors, owners, and everyone in between about themselves and the beers they bring alive.

Kirk from Mind The Font Design Agency

This week on The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is joined by Kirk from Mind The Font, a black owned branding and packaging design agency. Jenna and Kirk got talking about an article titled ‘How Contract Brewing Can Help Minority- and BIPOC-Owned Breweries' so she invited him on the podcast to discuss the article, and some much less serious topics.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • There's a lot of ego, and disagreements, and mansplaining in the craft beer industry. It can make it a little harder to enjoy the beer when people try to impose so many rules.
    • Most craft breweries aren't trying to be a huge global thing, they just want to be the beer of their town or their local area.
    • All packaging needs to have key points on it. What's the brand? The flavor? The size? And the ABV? The job of the designer is also to give you all the information you need to know without having to turn over the can.
    • As a designer, Kirk gets a brief from the company with all the key information about the product, what they want, and who the brand it targeting.
    • Your story as a brand is so much more important than your image.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I went to the store and there was like this wall of 300 different beers. It was like a kaleidoscope of color'

‘I'm pretty sure this is orange soda... but I'm not sure'

‘There's not a tonne of rules with making labels, if you understand the core, you can get creative'

Mike from Craft Beer Bucket List

This week on The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is joined by Mike from the Craft Beer Bucket List podcast. Find out all about how to market your brewery or taphouse from someone who has been there and done that. Also listen in for Jenna and Mike's opinions on social media, marketing, and what kinds of beer they just can't stand.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • If you're running a brewery, then you have to decide if you want to try to be the big supplier or the local spot where people come down to have a beer.
    • You also need to get involved in the community, go to events, support local causes, let people know that you're there and that you are a part of the area. It doesn't matter how good your beer is, if people don't know who you are or where you are then you won't have any customers.
    • Having an online presence can be helpful but if you don't do it right then it can do more harm than good.
    • The UK kills it with their beer can art.
    • Craft beer is getting to the same levels of popularity and recognizability than the big lager brands.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘The thing I like about breweries are the people'

‘Everyone thinks that social media isn't the magical solution, it's not. You have to use it appropriately'

‘Most breweries have a pretty interesting story, it's just making sure people hear it'

    Reviewing Halloween Beers

It's spooky season on The Craft Brewers' Creative and Jenna is taste testing some Halloween themed beers. Does pumpkin belong in beer? Is that really Jenna's dog in the background or is her apartment haunted? And can an entire can of beer just disappear into thin air? Listen in to find out.

    THE BEERS

Haunted House - Allagash Brewing Company

    Dark Ale - 6.66% ABV

Doomed by a love of pitch-black Porters and our Allagash House Beer, we summoned the recipe for Haunted House. Roasted Barley and Blackprinz malt curse this beer with a gravely dark hue. Hopped with Crystal, Chinook, and Saaz hops, this beer ends with a ghost of coffee-flavored bitterness and hauntingly complex malty palate.

PSL - Pumpkin Spice Latte - 3 Sons Brewing Co.

    Pumpkin / Yam Beer - 8.5% ABV

Our seasonal & infamous Pumpkin Spice Latte inspired Ale. PSL is loaded with a combination of coffee, pumpkin, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

How Now Brown Cow w/ Pumpkin Spice - Aslin Beer Company

    Stout - Milk / Sweet - 6% ABV

This iteration of our delectable Milk Stout packs a punch of pumpkin & a creamy vanilla finish! Rich aromas of a fall evening ready for those cool, cozy days ahead. Afterglow Shimmer - 1 of Us Brewing Co.

    Sour - Fruited Gose - 4% ABV

Beware the night prowler, he's all dolled up and ready to howl at the moon. Mango Peach marshmallow Slushy Gose, so good you'll want to join the beast.

Jenna is moving soon so it's time to drink all the beers she has left in the back of her fridge. We all have those right? Fruited Sour Ale with sweet tropical Passionfruit and juicy tart Raspberry! There ain't no party like a motel party after party cause a motel party after party don't stop. Show Less

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • There's a lot of lactose added to beers, which isn't good for lactose intolerant people. Some of the cans don't even make it clear.
    • Re-fermentation can occur in some beers if they're not kept cold.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Can we stop putting marshmallow in beer'

‘It's just full of puree, that's baby food'

‘From a design perspective I really like this can, but it also makes me want to drink it less'

‘Oh, she's purple, and she's thick'

‘These are large chunks of what I can only assume is cheesecake'

    • Fire Maker and Steady Hand are about a mile away from each other, so if you're in Atlanta then hit them both up in the same night.
    • Jenna wishes she could post reviews on Untapped that are just her personal tastes, and wouldn't be seen as giving the brewery a bad review.
    • SweetWater is one of the older craft breweries in Atlanta and kind of started the scene there. They were so DIY that you used to be able to show up there and work a few hours and get paid in beer.

    Eventide Brewing

Coming to you from Eventide Brewing in Grant Park, Atlanta. In this week's episode of The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is joined by jack of all trades, Hayley Cowen and head brewer, Adam Lukey from Eventide Brewing. Find out all about their favorite beers and can art that they have created and how they go about brewing different kinds of craft ales.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Eventide means twilight in old English, which is when the group of friends who formed the brewing company would get together to drink.
    • German towns will often have a town brewery and that will be the most popular drink among the locals, as opposed to national or international brands.
    • A Märzen beer is a German beer traditionally brewed in March so they are ready for Oktoberfest. However, in the modern age we have things like temperature control and stainless steel so the process can be expediated. This is sometimes considered controversial to beer purists.
    • A cold IPA is a crisper version of an IPA brewed at the lowest possible temperature and when finishes is almost the opposite of an American pale ale.

    Harry of Xbeerimental Brewing Co

A bit of a change this week as we explore more of the brewing side of beer. In this episode of The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is joined by guest Harry from Xbeerimental Brewing Co. Find out what Harry brews and how it's more creative than your average craft beer.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Gruit ales are essentially beers that are charged with botanicals rather than hops, traditionally made in Belgium.
    • Harry thought why am I brewing the same things that I can go to the store and buy. If I'm making it myself, I can experiment with weird flavors.
    • A lager yeast likes the colder temperatures and sits at the bottom whereas an ale yeast likes a room temperature and floats to the top.

    • Tom thinks that the traditional beers, especially in the UK, will be overtaken by craft beer in the next few years.

Jen Borror of Hoot Design Studio: Why your talented artists' work gets bungled at canning time

In this episode of The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is joined by Illustrator Jen Borror of Hoot Design Studio. Jen has had her art featured on beer cans for Monument City Brewing, 1623 Brewing, and Telluride Brewing Co.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • A graphic designer and an illustrator have two different sets of skills. An illustrator draws the art and the graphic designer does the layout and branding.
    • Most breweries will use both a graphic designer and an illustrator but Hoot Design Studio do both.
    • Jen recommends new breweries work with an experienced graphic designer rather than an artist. There is so much more that goes into the can than just the art. How does it all fit? What font will grab attention? How should the file be formatted to wrap around the can?
    • If a file isn't formatted properly when it goes to the printer, they will charge you more to fix it.
    • A brewer has put time and money into making their beer, and they're trusting the designer to sell what they have made. Does it represent what's in the can? Does it make people want to pick it up off the store shelf?

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I'm not just and artist, I'm a graphic designer too, I can do this whole label'

‘It's a visual taste for what people expect to find when the open the can'

‘Freaky Fish! That is so fun, one of my favorites, from Telluride'
