Since the book was published, Hill admitted to plagiarizing a portion of the book and she faces multiple ethics investigations. Hill was also accused by Alex Murdaugh's defense team of potential jury tampering for some of the statements she allegedly made to jurors.

Ryan Lindler Sr. and Ryan Lindler Jr., farmers from the area, were charged with the murder of Kevin Newhouse.
The father and son are claiming self defense and may invoke the SC "stand your ground" law as a defense.

Susan Smith’s story shocked the nation in October of 1994 when she claimed a black man had kidnapped her two young sons.
For nine days, she made dramatic pleas on national television for their safe return but suspicions quickly turned to Smith herself.
Susan Smith confessed on November 3, 1994 to the unthinkable she had strapped her children into their car seats into a lake drowning them both.
Smith received a life sentence and isceligibke for parole in 2024.
