Little Kids, Big Hearts

Sparkler Learning

Little Kids, Big Hearts helps kids and their grown-ups grow social and emotional skills, a.k.a. Big Hearts, with a little help from the show's host, Todd Loyd, a longtime early childhood educator. It’s a space where kids LEAD the discussion and explore big ideas in SEL — from feelings to friendship to helping others — together. If you like using your imagination, hanging out with puppets, going on mindfulness journeys to magical worlds, and eating gummy bears that grow on trees, then you're in the right place! Recommended for big-hearted kids ages 3-8 (and their grown-ups).

    Camp Sparkler: Hopes & Dreams

It's our eighth and final week of Little Kids, Big Hearts @ Camp Sparkler, and we're focused on our hopes and dreams: What are we looking forward to as the new school year approaches? What do we want to learn? What are we excited to experience?

💚 First, Todd shares some clips from an episode called "Hopes & Dreams With Jolly Abraham." Three kids — Levi, Christine, and Ariel — share some of the amazing things they'd learned in the last year ... and what they're hoping and dreaming for the year ahead .

💚 Then Todd and the kids journey to the Land of Qook-a-lackas where they visit with  Qook-a-lacka friend played by Jolly Abraham. They join in the Qook-a-lacka tradition of Moon Day, where they help to “send off” the old moon and “welcome” the new moon by sharing hopes and dreams.

"I hope and dream for me and my brothers to get along," says Ariel.

What are YOU hoping and dreaming?

    Camp Sparkler: Feelings

Week 7 of Little Kids, Big Hearts @ Camp Sparkler is focused on feelings. We all have them — and we all can learn to identify them and manage them!

Feelings are something we discuss a lot on our podcast, Little Kids, Big Hearts. In honor of this week of camp, Todd shares clips from two podcast episodes:

💚 First, Todd shares a clip from an episode called "Feeling Angry," in which Lauren, Esther, and Sam share what musical instrument their anger reminds them of. (Listen to the whole episode and the bonus interview to hear the voice of Tony Winning actress Marjan Neshat, who plays the role of a very ANGRY qook-a-lacka: https://playsparkler.org/little-kids-big-hearts-feeling-angry/)

💚 Then, Todd shares a clip from another episode called "What Can You Do With Big Feelings?" in which Anaya, Eleanor, Raffaele, and Wilder share where they FEEL their feelings. At the end of the episode you can dance your feelings with a special song called Dance Your Feelings: https://playsparkler.org/what-can-you-do-with-big-feelings/

    Camp Sparkler: Feeling Grateful!

Week 4 of Camp Sparkler is focused on GRATITUDE — feelings of thankfulness and appreciation for the positive people, things, and experiences in your life. Gratitude can be a big, abstract idea for most young children — but it is important! Feeling grateful can help to foster emotional well-being and resilience. Research shows that practicing gratitude can reduce stress and anxiety, improve relationships, and promote a sense of belonging.

The host of the Little Kids, Big Hearts podcast and head counselor at Camp Sparkler, Todd Loyd, introduces the idea and shares some clips from a podcast episode focused on calming down — "Gratitude PowerUp with Lauren Blumenfeld."

In this episode, three children (Charlie, Roxy, and Everly) discuss what gratitude means and help a Qook-a-lacka friend, Kwi-loh (played by Lauren Blumenfeld), power up the Gratitude Power Plant in the Land of Qook-a-lackas.

In the episode, three kids (Charlie, Katrina, and Sienna) join Todd to share tips and tricks they use to calm down — which come in handy when they’re experiencing big feelings. The kids and Todd then take a journey to the Land of Qook-a-lakcas to visit Todd’s friend Quinlan who invited the group to become the first humans ever to attend Camp Quinder-Calm! The role of Quinlan is played by Rebecca Naomi Jones. Storytime: The Curious Case of the Quiet Tree

Once, in  the Land of Qook-a-lackas, where the sky shimmers lavender in the mornings and the grass hums softly under your feet, there stood a tree that… didn’t do anything.  It didn’t blossom in spring.  It didn’t drop colorful leaves in the fall.  It didn’t blossom or grow fruits like the other trees — no Quinklepuffs, no Quiddleberries!

Welcome to the newest original story from the Little Kids, Big Hearts podcast.

This month, we're focused on the natural world and how it makes us feel.

And this story is all about a very special tree. Was it quiet ... or was it just waiting to share its true self with people who were patient?? Listen along to find out.

At the end of the episode, listen up for a new song by our friend Benjamin Weiner inspired by the power of nature to help us learn and grow! The song is called GROWIN' UP THIS SUMMER! And in addition to listening on the podcast feed, you can watch a music video of it on our YouTube channel! So visit and sing/dance along.

Thanks for joining us for Storytime!

And this month's "mission" is The Nature 🔍🌻 Detective Mission.

Todd and Christy challenge listeners to learn about something new about the nature that surrounds you. See if you can find out the name of a tree or flower near where you live...or discover something else you'd never noticed about the natural world! The more we notice, the more connected we feel — to nature, to others, and to ourselves.

Parents/caregivers: Share the results of your kids' Nature Detective Missions with us! You can email it to us at [email protected] or share it on social media.

Have fun out there, Nature Detectives!

We 💚 Nature with Maulik Pancholy

On this episode, three kids — Charlie from Brooklyn, Knox from Denver, and Sienna from Houston — join LKBH host Todd Loyd to discuss the great outdoors — and how nature makes them feel.

The kids and Todd then hike up an enormous imaginary mountain to travel to the Land of Qook-a-lackas … arriving JUST at the right moment to help a Qook-a-lacka friend, Qwiffin (played by the amazing Maulik Pancholy), grow a "memory garden."

    What is a memory garden?!

Qwiffin explains: "Well, it's a garden, but instead of being made out of dirt and seeds and the power of photosynthesis, it grows in a different way: It grows from our memories of being outdoors in nature."

The kids and Todd help Qwiffin brainstorm amazing memories of nature in all four seasons: ❄️, 🌸,🌻,🍁!

Together, with the power of their memories, they help the garden glow and grow!
