- 1 hour 6 minutesEp #353 Psychopathy and Coercive Control: Why British Airways Killer Robert Brown Remains High Risk with Hetti Barkworth-Nanton CBE, Part 8
Joanna Simpson was brutally killed by her estranged husband, British Airways pilot Robert Brown, just one week before their divorce was due to be finalised. Brown pre-dug a grave and hid her body in Great Windsor Park. He finally admitted killing Joanna with a claw hammer, but he was acquitted of murder and convicted of manslaughter which meant he was eligible for release after 13 years. Following years of campaigning by Joanna's mother Diana Parkes, best friend Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, Laura Richards and thousands of Crime Analyst listeners, Brown’s automatic release was stopped in 2023.
He came up for parole in April 2026. In this episode, Laura interviews Hetti Barkworth-Nanton and they take you behind the Parole Board Hearing sharing new details about Brown's psychopathic behaviour and ongoing risk.
Laura analyses and discusses with Hetti the significance of the evidence considered by the panel, including the relevance of coercive control, the importance of judicial sentencing remarks, and why understanding behavioural patterns - not simply convictions - is imperative when assessing dangerousness and risk.
In this episode Laura and Hetti discuss:
The significance of the fact-finding process prior to the Parole Board Hearing.
What the panel learned about Robert Brown's behaviour and psychology from a 330 page dossier.
Why psychopathy and behavioural patterns matter in risk assessment.
The importance of coercive control when assessing risk and dangerousness.
The knife incident and why it remained significant despite no criminal conviction.
Why the original sentencing remarks became crucial evidence years later.
The difference between criminal convictions and behavioural evidence.
What "retained culpability" means and why it mattered at the Parole Board Hearing.
Lessons for professionals assessing high-risk perpetrators.
Why understanding coercive control saves lives.
This episode continues Crime Analyst's landmark series examining Joanna Simpson's murder, the campaign that prevented Robert Brown's release, and the lessons every professional -and every listener - can learn about coercive control, risk assessment and the importance of understanding dangerous behaviour before tragedy occurs.

9 July 2026, 5:00 am - 1 hour 14 minutesEp #351 Judge Rowland's Egregious Misjudgement: Jazmine’s Parents Demand Accountability. Hampshire Serial Gang Rape Case, Part 4
In this exclusive interview Laura is joined by Jazmine’s parents following the Court of Appeal's decision to overturn the unduly lenient sentences handed to two teenage boys convicted of 10 counts of rape of two girls in Hampshire.
After widespread public outrage and a legal challenge by the Attorney General, the Court of Appeal ruled that the original sentences failed to reflect the seriousness of the offences. Two boys, who had initially avoided custody, were re-sentenced to four years' detention.
Whilst the decision marked an important step towards accountability, Jazmine’s parents explain in detail why it is still not enough and what needs to change– including a personal plea to Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr.
Laura shares her analysis of the 52-page Judgement from the Court of Appeal and Judge Rowland’s Sentencing Remarks in the context of the Sentencing Guidelines and increasing male violence to girls and women.
In this episode, Laura, and Jazmine’s parents discuss:
- The severe psychological impact and harm to Jazmine;
- How evidence of the victim’s trauma was overlooked by Judge Rowland in favour of his impression;
- How expert opinion about a sharp implement being used to cut victim C2’s clothing was overlooked in favour of Judge Rowland’s impression;
- Judge Rowland’s treatment of the boys vs the girls;
- The over focus on the boys so-called vulnerabilities whilst ignoring the girls;
- The sentencing guidelines – what needs to change;
- Lack of training and accountability for Judges and why this must change;
- The foundation established by Jazmine and her family to support victims and create lasting change.
The courage shown by Jazmine and her family in speaking publicly helps shine a light on the realities of sexual violence and the urgent need for judicial accountability and reform.

2 July 2026, 5:00 am - 1 hour 43 secondsEp #349 British Airways Killer Robert Brown’s Parole Board Hearing with Diana Parkes, Part 7
Mother of two, Joanna Simpson, was brutally killed by her estranged husband, British Airways pilot Robert Brown, on 31 October 2010. Brown smuggled a claw hammer in to Joanna's home and bludgeoned her to death before burying her body in a pre-dug grave. Despite this, Brown was acquitted of murder and convicted of manslaughter. He would serve just 13 years before becoming eligible for automatic release.
Laura’s forensic analysis of Joanna's case, together with Joanna's extraordinary mother, Diana Parkes CBE, and best friend, Hetti Barkworth-Nanton CBE, ignited a grassroots movement that successfully prevented Brown's automatic release.
But that was not the end. Brown was eligible for parole again in April 2026. Listen as Diana shares the all-important details of what happened at the Parole Board meeting – you won’t believe your ears.
In this episode, Laura and Di discuss:
- The behind the scenes of the parole board process;
- The emotional impact on Joanna's family and loved ones;
- The Parole Board hearing – what the professionals recommended and the decision;
- Further insights into Robert Brown’s psychopathology;
- Lessons for professionals assessing coercive control, stalking and domestic abuse;
- The continuing work of the Joanna Simpson Foundation, and;
- Joanna's enduring legacy and why the fight for justice continues.

25 June 2026, 5:00 am - 1 hour 12 minutesEp #347: Analysing Judge Rowland's Sentencing Remarks in the Hampshire Gang Rape Case, Part 3
Three teenage boys were convicted of 17 sexual offences, including 11 rapes of two separate girls, one at knifepoint. They were sent home with a £26 fine.
This case should alarm everyone – and it is far from isolated. Laura continues her analysis of Judge Nicholas Rowland’s sentencing remarks including the lack of understanding by the Judge regarding grooming, the power imbalance, vulnerability, coercion, planning and exploitation and the boys’ histories which has resulted in a flawed risk assessment and unduly lenient. Laura has examined the case in referring to the problematic sentencing guidelines and the context of rising levels of male violence to girls and women.
In this episode, Laura explores:
- What the language reveals about how victims and offenders are framed;
- The minimisation of rape, coercion, intimidation, grooming and planning;
- How victim blaming can appear in courtroom language;
- What was prioritised — and what was ignored;
- The failure to properly recognise grooming, power imbalance, and removal of consent;
- Why the boys’ histories and escalating behaviours matter;
- The concerning lack of sentencing guidance for serious sexual offences committed by children;
- What this means for risk, accountability, public safety, and prevention;
- Why judicial training and a Judicial Accountability Framework are urgently needed.
Laura also discusses the wider implications of the case in the context of increasing male violence against women and girls and asks urgent questions about who the criminal justice system is protecting.
If you have not already listened, Laura previously analysed the broader Hampshire serial gang rape case, the offenders’ histories, the warning signs, escalating behaviours, and the systemic failures that allowed dangerous patterns to go unchecked. Listen here:

18 June 2026, 5:00 am - 56 minutes 28 secondsEp #345: Analysing Judge Rowland's Sentencing Remarks in the Hampshire Gang Rape Case, Part 2
Three teenage boys were convicted of 17 sexual offences including 11 rapes of two separate girls, one at knifepoint. Despite this, Judge Nicholas Rowland determined that none of the boys should go to prison as he did not want to ‘criminalize them unnecessarily.’
To understand this egregious decision that has quite rightly sparked national outrage, Laura shares her forensic deconstruction of Judge Rowland’s 23-page sentencing remarks in the context of the sentencing guideline and the increasing levels of male violence to girls and women. It’s worse than you might have thought.
This is not just about one case. Laura raises urgent questions about who the criminal justice system is protecting drawing on her experience as former Head of the Homicide Prevention Unit and Head of the Sexual Offences Section at New Scotland Yard.
In this episode, Laura examines:
- Judge Nicholas Rowland's sentencing remarks and his rationale behind them in reference to the sentencing guidelines;
- The lack of specific sentencing guidance relating to rape and indecent image offences committed by children;
- How the boys grooming and planning behaviours were overlooked;
- The role of coercion, intimidation, and power imbalance;
- The removal of consent and the realities of victim compliance;
- Planning, premeditation, and offender decision-making;
- Victim blaming and the language used throughout the proceedings;
- The representation of victims, offenders, and risk within the courtroom;
- Psychopathy, callousness, and concerning behavioural indicators;
- Why pattern recognition and behavioural analysis matter in assessing future risk;
- The broader implications for public safety, accountability, and prevention.

11 June 2026, 5:00 am - 52 minutes 47 secondsEp 343: Convicted Serial Rapists Walk Free With £26 Fine, Pt 1
Two separate girls were raped by three boys, one at knifepoint, in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, in November 2024 and January 2025. The three teenagers filmed the rapes and posted them on-line, blatantly laughing. The case went to trial, and they were found guilty of 11 counts of rape out of 17 sexual offences. However, Judge Nicholas Rowland stated, ‘None of you need go to prison today’ and that he didn’t want to crimiminalize them UNNECCESSARILY. This case has rightly caused national and international outrage and Laura is calling for the Judge to be investigated and for a judicial accountability framework. Anger is not enough – you can help and act now.
For a decade Laura worked at New Scotland Yard analysing violent crime, identifying patterns, linking offences, and helping catch serial rapists and serial killers. One lesson was clear: nobody starts with rape or murder. There are escalating patterns of behaviour prior and opportunities to stop them.
In this urgent episode, Laura examines the Hampshire serial gang rape case and the boys histories which show at least one is on a pathway to murder. Laura analyses the case through the lens of behavioural analysis, risk assessment, offender pattern recognition, and public safety.
Drawing on her experience as former Head of the Homicide Prevention Unit and Head of the Sexual Offences Section at New Scotland Yard, Laura explains why this case is not an anomaly, why accountability matters, and why the system's repeated failure to identify and intervene with dangerous offenders puts women and girls at risk.
Laura highlights:
• escalating dangerous patterns of behaviour;
• why pattern recognition and near misses identification matters to prevent serious violence and homicides;
• How systems and people in them repeatedly fail to join the dots;
• The dangerous consequences of minimising male violence against women and girls;
• Why accountability matters for victims, survivors, and public safety;
• The parallels with other high-profile cases, including Levi Bellfield, John Worboys, and Ian Huntley;
• The role misogyny in decision-making and outcomes, and;ACT NOW:
