Ep 329: A Line in the Sand: Sam Bouffler and the Landmark Coercive Control Conviction, Part 1

In a landmark moment for justice in Australia, New South Wales has seen its first full-time prison sentence handed down for the crime of coercive control. In this episode, Laura deconstructs the case of Police v Callum Fairleigh, analyzing the behavioral patterns that led to this historic conviction and what it means for the future of victim protection.

Laura moves beyond the headlines to center the experience of Samantha, the survivor who bravely shared her story to ensure others feel less alone. Laura provides a trauma-informed analysis of the "drip-drip" nature of this abuse—from digital abuse and stalking to the calculated erosion of autonomy—and explains why this case is a vital test of the new laws implemented in July 2024.

    Key Analytical Takeaways:

    ·       The Blueprint of Control: Deconstructing Fairleigh’s patterns, including "bombarding" communication, isolation from family, and the use of digital footprints as tools of entrapment.

    ·       The "Validation" of Sentencing: Why a prison sentence—the first under the Crimes Legislation Amendment (Coercive Control) Act 2022—is a critical societal acknowledgment that non-physical abuse is a serious crime.

    ·       Trauma-Informed Interviewing: asking the right questions and identifying the pattern of coercive control.

    ·       The Risk Factor: Analyzing how these behaviors are a known "red flag" for intimate partner terrorism and homicide and why early intervention saves lives.

Episode Resources & Support:If you or someone you know is experiencing coercive control, help is available:

    ·       1800RESPECT: Call 1800 737 732 for 24/7 support and counseling.

    ·       NSW Domestic Violence Line: 1800 656 463.

    ·       Empower You App: A tool for discreetly documenting abuse and finding support.

This episode contains important, life-changing and life-saving information about coercive control, risk, and recognising patterns of abuse.

Laura shares her expert analysis of the body worn camera footage from the Moab City Police Department. Officer Daniel Robbins was the responding officer who pulled over Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie in their van in Utah on August 12 2021 following two calls from members of the public.

One caller told despatchers: “A gentleman was slapping the girl. They ran up and down the sidewalk. He proceeded to hit her, hopped in the car, and they drove off.”

Ep 325: Coercive Control: A Child’s Unthinkable Journey with David Challen, Part 2

In part 2 David speaks candidly about his experience, excavating the patterns he now recognises, the behaviours that were normalised at the time, and the lasting effect of living with a coercively controlling father. Together, Laura and David examine the subtle and often missed warning signs, the insidious nature of coercive control, why recognising these patterns in law is critical to prevention, protection and saving lives and how men can be part of the solution in changing this behaviour.

David also recently joined Laura for a Crime Analyst Squad exclusive live event. David dives deeper into his experiences, sharing a photo which depicts what life was like living with his father, and more information about his mother’s murder trial.

Ep 323 Coercive Control: A Child's Unthinkable Journey with David Challen

Laura and David Challen, son of Sally Challen and author of The Unthinkable, unravel the insidious and lifelong harm coercive control causes a child.

David speaks candidly about his lived experience, the realities of growing up with a coercively controlling father, and his horrifying experience at his mothers’s trial where she was convicted of his fathers’s murder.

Listen and find out what David discovered when he went through all the trial transcripts. It angered him so much he started to campaign for his mother’s appeal and eventual successful release.

David also recently joined Laura for an exclusive live event and the recording is available now in the Squad for those who want to go deeper on this conversation. This conversation was compelling and eloquently gives language and insight into living with his abusive and coercively controlling father.

In this episode, Laura profiles Gabby Petito’s case from a behavioural, investigative and preventative perspective.

Having watched the police body worn camera footage captured when Moab City Police attended a domestic violence call out, Laura saw signs of coercive control. Laura opined early on that this was a ‘murder in slow motion’ and unfortunately was proven right.

Across this investigative series Laura analyzes Gabby’s social media and breaks down what she saw on camera. Laura shares the lessons from Gabby’s case so that we are all better equipped at spotting the warning signs in the future. It might just save a life.

Ep 319: Decodifying the Signs of Child Sexual Abuse with Ella McCrystal, Part 1

Laura interviews Ella McCrystal about surviving child sexual abuse, rape and domestic abuse, and the complex dynamics that can keep victims silent - including people-pleasing, fear, and when other family members and friends support and enable the abuser.

Together they discuss the red flags that a child is being groomed, accountability and societal attitudes towards abusers, and the urgent need to centre survivors rather than protecting perpetrators or reputations. Laura draws parallels with Virginia Roberts Giuffre and the Jeffrey Epstein case, the protection of powerful perpetrators and the societal narratives that often silence victims while enabling abuse to continue.

Ella also shares insight into her journey of healing and recovery, offering an honest and hopeful perspective on rebuilding life after trauma.

⚠️ Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of child sexual abuse, rape, domestic abuse and trauma, which some listeners may find distressing. Please listen with care.
