    In episode 314, we interviewed Belinda and her husband, Dr. Gary Fettke, and discussed the reasons why her husband was targeted by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Tasmanian Health Service for practicing a healthy fat, low-carbohydrate diet.

    Belinda took the initiative to research the bio-history of religion and its influences on nutrition policies and dietary guidelines. Her research revealed a massive influence of the Seventh-day Adventist church, their tax-free, financial stake in cereal and plant-based food companies, and their impact on what we are told to eat.

    Belinda and Gary opened the Nutrition for Life – Diabetes and Health Research Centre, which provides nutritional care around Tasmania and Australia. She is an advocate of a Low Carbohydrate, Healthy Fat (LCHF) lifestyle for the various health benefits, including the reversal of type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other chronic diseases.

    Kashundra (Shun) Foreman worked as a nurse for more than two decades before pursuing a master’s degree in human rights and social justice. She noticed many instances of injustice faced by Black American communities and realized that healthcare could help shed light on the health disparities experienced by people of color.

    During her graduate studies, Shun focused on the history of sugar in black communities. She traveled to sugar plantations in Louisiana and Sugar Land, Texas, to learn more about convict leasing and to understand the sugar industry’s role in Black American history. Her conversations with the late Reginald Moore in Sugar Land and plantation tours played a significant role in inspiring her to cut sugar from her diet, lose over fifty pounds, and raise awareness about sugar among communities of color.

    Shun continued her studies and became certified and licensed in holistic medicine and sugar addiction by Bitten Jonsson. She founded Sisters Breaking the Bonds of Sugar to raise awareness about sugar among Black Americans.

    Shun also serves as a sugar mentor for those who struggle with sugar, food, or carbohydrate addiction. She believes that raising awareness about the dangers of sugar can save lives in communities of color and is proud to have received testimonials from her clients.

    Fit In Mid-Life with Jason Smith! 978

    Jason Smith is a personal trainer, nutritional advisor and the founder of Fit in Midlife. After transforming his own health and fitness at the age of 50, he is on a mission to help people in midlife start and maintain their own fitness journey.

    Now 55, Jason trains and coaches clients worldwide through in person and online coaching and inspires a social media audience of more than half a million followers, including 271k on Instagram and more than 115k on TikTok. He regularly appears in the media and has been featured on the cover of Men's Fitness magazine.

    How Jason is today is a far cry from how he was when he first decided to improve his own health and fitness at the age of 50. Depressed, overwhelmed and lethargic, Jason was taking antidepressants and statins and had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a fatty liver.

    In January 2019, he saw a picture of Bilbo Baggins, the main character from The Hobbit films, running through the shire with the words ‘I’m going on an adventure’. This was a lightbulb moment for Jason who decided he wanted his own life to feel like an adventure and to have the energy to enjoy it.

    From that moment, he joined a gym, started going for walks, quit alcohol and began eating healthier. In just four months, he lost 25kg, reduced his body fat percentage from 28% to 12% and was able to come off all his medication. During his own fitness journey, he realized there was a huge lack of older personal trainers who were relatable and approachable for people over 40.

    This prompted him to give up his corporate job, qualify as a personal trainer and nutritional advisor and launch his business Fit in Midlife. Jason lives in Horsham, Surrey.
