In 1856, the United States passed a law allowing American citizens to claim islands in the country’s name, provided that no other country claimed them and that no one lived there.
The result was a host of scattered islands with zero population becoming part of the country.
Today, these islands are still US territories, and the vast majority of American citizens have absolutely no clue they are a part of the country.
Learn more about uninhabited US Territories and their odd histories on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

For millions of years, the islands of New Zealand remained a pristine wilderness, untouched by human footsteps. That changed in the 13th century when the world’s most elite mariners executed one of history’s greatest feats of navigation.
Guided by the stars and ocean swells, the Māori arrived with a "Great Fleet" of double-hulled canoes, completing the final chapter of Polynesian migration.
From the extinction of the giant Moa to resistance to the British, the Māori established a culture that endures to this day.

Evidence for this impact wasn’t obvious. There was strong skepticism when the theory was proposed, and it took decades for it to become widely accepted.
In the end, the evidence proved overwhelming.
Learn more about the Chicxulub Impact, how it was discovered, and how it changed the world on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The Purple Heart is awarded to those who have been wounded or killed in combat, making it one of the most solemn honors a service member can receive.
Learn more about the origins, history, and meaning of the Purple Heart on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.
