    Legendary Begins With Transformed Awareness

Yes I do believe in destiny. I sense that there is a set of invisible hands guiding us along and encouraging our moves and watching our backs. Having said this, nothing works for someone who does no work. Sorry to say this but there are just too many people on the planet who want the rewards of world-class without lifting a pinky to do what world-class requires. Leadership and personal greatness absolutely requires us to apply APR: Absolute Personal Responsibility.

We must set good habits and create clear plans and do the workouts (at 5AM please!) and deliver for clients. We need to read the books and study the craft and care for our loved ones and watch less TV and get the job done.

I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by far!) from any book I've ever written.

    The 4-Question Adversity Protocol

The job of a leader is to find the victory inside every adversity.

And the task of each human is to turn defeat into winning and tragedy into triumph.

I know that sounds obvious yet those who make their lives beautiful, joyful and great really do make it a practice of seeing windows of opportunity where most spot walls of adversity.

I’ve been through a lot in my life. Been bruised and bloodied, disappointed and dejected. Yet, I’ve always done my best to keep moving forward. And seeking the blessing inside the curse, if you get my drift.

And once you start operating like this (with the consistency that is the mother of mastery), failure becomes a friend. And a circumstance that introduces you to your gifts, strengths and most high of qualities.

I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by far!) from any book I've ever written.

The 6 Months Left to Live Question

I wanted to share a chapter from The Everyday Hero Manifesto with you. The chapter is called The 6 Months Left to Live Question.

    And here it is...

Just imagine. For only a second. That you had merely six months left to live.

...6 short months to do all those things you’d promised yourself you’d do.

...6 months to visit the Taj Mahal and listen to Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and see the Mona Lisa and walk along The Great Wall of China.

...6 months to write letters of forgiveness to those who wronged you and letters of love to those who cherished you. And only saw the light within you.

If you had just six months left to live, what things would you simply stop doing?

And what things would you have the boldness and wisdom and strength of heart to begin doing?

What is it that you would do? With only 6 months of life left to live.

This is the question I ask of you. So you live all that remains of your precious and soaring and lovely life well.

    Begin Thinking Like a Humanitarian

More than ever before. I understand that food is medicine. And through the food that you consume every day, you're either destroying your health, creating disease, in creating increasing inflammation, or through the food you eat, you're becoming healthier. Your nutrition also affects your moods. I'm going to repeat that again because it's so important. Your nutrition affects your moods and of course your nutrition is affecting your Healthset. It'll affect your skin. It'll affect your energy. It will affect the quality of your thinking. It will affect your your performance. So you really want to dial in on the right nutritional plan that is best for you. I think a really smart idea is working with the nutritionist, who can really help you calibrate the right foods for you to eat. And on the subject of
nutrition, I'm going to talk a little bit about hydration. I think most people are dehydrated. And by the way, first thing in the morning while you're working out, drink a lot of great water because most people wake up dehydrated. There's some very good science confirming right now you're going to love this piece, some very good science coming out right now, confirming that proper hydration is absolutely essential for proper mitochondrial function. If you don't drink enough water, you're not going to have enough energy. And like I suggest to you, protecting and battleproofing your energy is so important. You can have great dreams, great opportunities, great talents. If you don't have the energy that fight to execute all day long, to be great at work, great with your family, run your rituals, do your deliverables. You're never going to rise to world class in your own unique form of private greatness. So drink a lot of water. Make sure you are very, very well hydrated. The final thing I'll just touch on briefly, because it's so fascinating
and important to me is fasting. There's also good research coming out talking about the benefits of caloric restriction. Rats were studied on a restricted calorie diet, and these rats performed better and lived longer than the non calorie restricted rats. There's also research confirming that periods of intermittent fasting reduce inflammation and some of the markers for longevity. I think it's fascinating. If you look at a lot of history's greatest heroes and a lot of the great wisdom traditions. They all had one thing in common periods of fasting. Sure, some of these people did it for spiritual purification. Sure, some of these saints and heroes did it to clean out toxic emotions. So they elevated their Heartset. But I've also seen some of the greatest creative, some of the most productive people
on the planet. Some of the true inventors and creative geniuses, they all have one thing in common they fasted. And personally, I fast 24 hours two times a week. And what it does for my mental clarity, what it does for my energy, what it does for myself. Discipline is amazing and the ability to sit there. If I'm working on a new book and just drink fresh lemon tea, just drink fresh water. Just drink my two cups of coffee in the morning and then lock and load and bring it on for 8 or 9 or ten hours. Working on the book, not having to get up, not having to distract myself from my tight bubble of total focus because I'm in a fasted state is amazing. What it does for my self-discipline, my mental clarity, my productivity is incredible. So that's a little bit of a rant on fasting, but it just works so well for me. And like anything I'm sharing with you, try it. It might be another game-changer.

Habits to Steadily Optimize Your Health

One of the brain tattoos of my teachings that has helped so many of my clients is this one: Energy is more important than intelligence. To dominate your game and build your empire you don’t need to be the smartest person in the room. Not at all. You just need to have the most energy. To implement your visions. To bring application to your dreams. And to handcraft a life you adore.

Reading a Book Is Having a Conversation With the Author

Often, a writer has distilled 20 or 30 years of their wisdom and expertise and experiences in a single volume (that you can read in a few good evenings or a series of early mornings). Associating with someone who is living the life you want or someone who has skills you wish for or someone who has the interior qualities you hope to embody leaves you richer than when you picked up the book. Sometimes, a single conversation with the right person alters the unfolding of your life. Same for the right book.

The "Kill Your Darlings" Mantra for Masterwork Creation

Kill Your Darlings. It’s an old writers mantra  (credit: William Faulkner) which speaks to the fact that to make your magic real you need to delete everything from your creative project except for that which is absolutely astonishing. Masterwork is much more about what you leave out than put in.

    Your Ecosystem Shapes Your Mindset

When you are building something meaningful, be deliberate about what you let in. Use the news strategically, not reflexively.

Seek out places that elevate you—art galleries, forests, great architecture, open water. Visit the spaces where beauty lives. Your environment is not a passive backdrop to your creative life; it is an active ingredient in it. The people you surround yourself with, the places you choose to work, even the music you play—all of it is either feeding your creativity or diminishing it.

    Live Fully While You're Alive

Although I spoke a lot about legacy years ago (even wrote a book on it 25 years ago called Who Will Cry When You Die?), I no longer think it’s a thing worth pursuing.

Because we’ll be dead. So who cares what people say?

Better to be great and brave and excellent and loving while you’re alive. That’s the irony: care not about your legacy and live gorgeously now and you’ll automatically create a grand legacy.

    Know Your Cause

To be human is to crave a cause. We all need a powerful purpose to get us out of bed every morning and draw out the finest within us. I viscerally believe that one of the dominant reasons so many amongst us are addicted to distraction and living amid apathy is they haven’t found something larger than their own lives to stand for. Once you find your compelling cause, begin to share it with your community. Talk it up. Blog it out. This will give your followers hope + energy + drive. Your job is to bring meaning to people in need.

    Become Not an Injustice Collector

To not die when you get knocked down is to play with the gods. And soar with the angels.

Sometimes—in the hardest and darkest of times—what helps you survive and then thrive and then fly is putting one foot after another foot, after another foot. Small baby steps that eventually get us running again.

The key is not to give up. Never ever never ever ever ever ever never ever! (Thanks Winston).

Not to become an injustice collector.

Not to give up on your heroic ideals and your gorgeous dreams for a richer, better, happier and more helpful life. Become UnKillAble. Please.
