PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book

Luis welcomes back Nicole LePera to the podcast to chat about her new book, "Reparenting the Inner Child."

They discuss what it's like being real and messy in the public eye, and the role the fawn response plays in that experience. They explore how the inner child shows up in daily life, how tending to one's capacity expands the work outside of the session or practice space, and how to reparent without merging with the inner child and regressing. They also discuss humanizing others without bypassing themselves — or their own needs — in the process.

[Ep. 330] Stress Demands More Nutrients

PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book

Neuronutritionist Timothy Frie joins Luis today. Tim learned early in his studies that the neural pathways of appetite and food-seeking are the ones most impacted by stress, and that stress increases nutrient demand. He connects the threads for us on how he followed this curiosity, healed his body and disordered eating patterns, to how he now teaching practitioners Neuronutrition.

Neuronutrition is the intersection of neuroscience, neurobiology, neuro-psychology and somatic psychology. Somatic psychology is at neuronutrition’s core, allowing us reconnect to our bodies innate wisdom. From there we can ask, and answer, “what does my body need?”

The question of food is not what is disease causing, but instead what is health promoting?

[Ep. 329] What Being Goth & Recent Imposter Syndrome Taught Me About Belonging

PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book

Kickin’ it old school, Luis does a solo meander around the topic of belonging. Videoless podcasting, as he is today, allows his vision the enjoyable option to focus on whatever it wants, like the ant walking on a nearby plant. (Fun HLN fact, Camille decided she wanted to learn from Luis when she saw his reaction to a bug walking on him in a presentation.)

Luis recorded this podcast while teaching at the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium. Before getting on stage, Luis found himself unexpectedly shaken. He tended the sensation, allowing it to show him a part of himself that was shrinking. This part was protecting him from not belonging to the group of licensed mental health workers he was teaching.

"Belonging" in modern times means conforming societally in a relationship of extraction and consumption.  Whereas, ancestrally, there was a wisdom and a reciprocity to conforming and belonging. Belonging meant a connection to earth, land and ancestors.

In these modern times Luis’ goal is finding safety in not belonging. He prefers belonging to himself, and from that place of safety building his own misfit tribe of weirdos.

[Ep. 328] How Screens, Processed Food & Burnout Are Driving Your Freeze Response

PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book

Dopamine, amino acids, hopelessness, and beans! Let's dive in with Luis and Camille as they explore burnout and freeze alongside ADHD.

If we get our dopamine from ultra processed foods, devoid of micronutrients, lacking L-Tyrosine, we do not replenish the building blocks to make more dopamine. We find ourselves hopeless, unmotivated, exhausted, and overwhelmed. Frozen.

Whether we are diagnosed neurodivergent or not, ultra processed foods, and screens, can put us into a state of freeze and burnout. Our next 6 month Slow Group, starting April 7th, will be focusing on counteracting these symptoms and nourishing bodies holding ADHD, as well as freeze and burnout. We may not have the ADHD diagnosis but we may have the experience of ADHD symptoms.

We are not trying to fix ourselves. We are learning to relate to ourselves and to the ADHD/burnout symptoms.  We also learn to relate to screen usage and nutrition because it can either enhance or reduce our capacity.

Luis closes the episode with a beautiful and simple practice that can help us navigate burnout.

PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book

Throwback to when Camille’s weekends contained 16 bottles of wine, and a day contained 80 cigarettes for Luis. Wine and cigarettes respectively calmed and stimulated their neurodivergent brains into surviving.

They no longer need wine or cigarettes because they live in alignment with their interests and capacity: part of the process was learning to live lives that fascinated them. In month 6 of the ADHD slow group, we dive into how to cultivate a fascinating life for ourselves.

A fascinating life isn’t a life of luxury, it’s learning to notice what lights us up, and following that interest. It can be as simple as buying rhinestone pens instead of plain black pens. It can be taking out books from the library on our latest hobby curiosity.

Our neurodivergent baseline is low dopamine. Modern lifestyles deplete our dopamine further. We need a life so interesting to us it makes us want to get out of bed in the morning, effectively making life the stimulant.

They also talk about month 5 of the course, which is all about being in relationship with someone who is neurodivergent or overwhelmed. For example, Camille needed silly shows after a day of cognitive heady interactions. Her husband needed cognitive shows after a day teaching young children. Their solution was game shows giving Camille an element of play, and her husband cognitive stimulation.

[Ep. 325] Embodying ADHD: Navigating Overwhelm, Capacity, & Relationships (Part 2/3)

PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book

We aren’t gonna tell you how to fix ADD/ADHD. (Spoiler alert, you or your loved one don’t need fixing.) We are, however, going to teach our 6-month group on how to relate to ADHD, in yourself or in someone else. The actual problem is a societal standard our brain wasn’t designed for.

In this podcast we are talking about months 3 & 4 of the slow group curriculum. We will explore navigating overwhelm, and our capacity versus our desire. Modern society rewards our working beyond our capacity, forcing many of us to burnout and collapse. No wonder it’s even more difficult to not fit the standard productivity mold that shames so many patterns of ADHD brain types.

The slow group will learn how to assess, then tend to, capacity. Instead of living from desire, an inherently dominating pattern, we can start to honor the ebb and flow of our capacity. An important element is finding our unique motivators, based in pleasure and interest, as willpower does not provide the dopamine to motivate an ADHD brain.

Also discussed will be relationships, from the perspective of the person with ADHD, or from the perspective of being in relationship with the person with ADHD.

Camille and Luis talk about how they navigate their family relationships when different brains need different systems from each other to thrive.

[Ep. 324] Embodying ADHD: Dopamine Deficiency, Functional Freeze, & Stimulants (Part 1/3)

PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book

At the age of nine Luis was diagnosed with ADHD. He never medicated with pharmaceuticals: instead his drugs of choice were coffee, cigarettes, and a stimulating diet. Over the years Luis has learned how to reduce the stimulants needed to keep him engaged.

ADD/ADHD is when there is not enough dopamine getting to the brain, usually because of low levels of brain and gut, or vagus nerve inflammation. People in this situation are sometimes referred to as “bored”, “lazy”, or "depressed", as a body collapses in to functional freeze.

Camille and Luis discuss the upcoming 6-month ADHD Slow Group starting April 7th. It begins with learning to relate to the ADHD nervous system, overcouplings and judgments about ADHD behaviors, animism of the body, overwhelm, dopamine, relationships and finally cultivating a fascinating life. They will also teach how to leverage balancing foods, and how to consciously use stimulants.

The gift of ADHD is a low capacity for bullsh*t, or as Luis calls it RITC, a Radical Inability To Conform. Instead of seeing it as a disorder, we see it as the dopamine deficiency that it is, so that we can learn to relate to in a healthier way.

PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book

In this replay episode, we explore ADHD or RITC -- a Radical Inability To Conform.

Luis shares with us his own childhood experiences with ADHD, Tourette's syndrome, and nervous ticks. Often people are prescribed medications to suppress these conditions but Luis questions what would it mean to allow ourselves to relate to them as expressions?

Luis begins to reframe the idea of ADHD; pivoting from "I can't focus" to "I have attention for what interests me."  He also explains how guilt or shame resulting from an ADHD expression, i.e. a lack of attention to something you "should" be doing, can propel someone into a state of freeze, reinforcing the notion that they "can't" do something.

So whether we have ADHD or not, he invites us into a practice to explore the spectrum of tasks we have to do or should do and how can we interweave them with activities that genuinely interest us and rejuvenate us, thus giving us more capacity for doing the "have-to" tasks.

[Ep. 322] Biochemist Explains How Chronic Stress Fuels 99% Of All Our Diseases

PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book

Our favorite biochemist, Karen Hurd, joins us again to discuss how stress fuels disease. Chronic levels of stress, be it from food, relationships, physical exertion, thought patterns, or the environment, all tax the adrenal glands. Karen tells us how and why this happens. With taxed adrenals we are left feeling burnt out and reach for coffee and stimulants, forcing us to push past our bodies need to rest. Luis and Karen talk about cultural conditioning around resting in the age of a DO MORE culture. They also address cancer, viruses, and chronic fatigue.

We always love exploring the science with Karen behind why our bodies do what they do!
