    "The Divine One", "die Göttliche" - allein schon ihr Spitzname wies sie als Legende aus. Sarah Vaughan zählte zu den Diven des Vokal-Jazz, ohne je die Bodenhaftung zu verlieren. Eine Frau mit einer außergewöhnlichen Stimme, wandlungsfähig wie keine andere.



    Mit achtzehn gewinnt Sarah einen Gesangs-Wettbewerb in Harlems Apollo Theater – und gewinnt. Im Publikum sitzen der Pianist Earl Hines und dessen Sänger Billy Eckstine. Beide nehmen für sich in Anspruch, ihr „Entdecker“ und zu sein. Vaughans Spezialgebiet wird die Ballade. Sie macht unzählige Aufnahmen, in kleineren Besetzungen und mit Orchestern, nimmt für Jazz-Label Jazz und für Pop-Label Pop auf. So groß der Stimmumfang mit mehr als drei Oktaven, so breit das Spektrum ihrer Gestaltungsmittel. Was sie singt, wird zweitrangig, entscheidend ist, wie sie singt. Die Vaughan-Biografin Leslie Gourse: „In ihren Zwanzigern und Dreißigern war Sarahs Stimme leicht wie ein feiner Wein, in den Sechzigern kraftvoll wie ein reifer Cognac.“

    Der Pianist hinter Take Five - Dave Brubeck

    Aus einem Cowboy wurde ein gefeierter Pianist. Dank ihm lernte die Musik-Welt bis fünf zu zählen. Dave Brubeck experimentierte mit ungeraden Taktarten und machte "Take Five" zum Millionen-Hit - und sein Quartett zu einer der populärsten Combos des Jazz.



    Sein Vater ist Viehzüchter, ein mehrfach ausgezeichneter Meister im Rodeo und im Lasso-Werfen. Seine Mutter, eine Pianistin, warnt den Filius eindringlich vor einem Leben als Cowboy. Dave nimmt ein Studium der Tiermedizin auf, wechselt aber schnell zur Musik. Nach dem Militärdienst studiert Brubeck beim Komponisten Darius Milhaud und vereint Jazz mit Elementen moderner Klassik. 1951 gründet er eine Formation, aus der 1958 das „klassische Dave Brubeck Quartett“ hervorgeht. Diese Band, zu der der Saxofonist Paul Desmond gehört, wird weltweit gefeiert, bis der Bandleader sie 1967 auflöst. Danach fokussiert er sich aufs Komponieren, spielt gelegentlich mit Gerry Mulligan - und mit dreien seiner Söhne – alle Musiker…

    Jelly Roll Morton - Der Erfinder des Jazz?

    "Ich war der Schöpfer des Jazz". Bescheidenheit lag dem notorischen Angeber nicht. Doch er zählte zu den Pionieren und Wegbereitern, ein brillanter Geschichtenerzähler, der sich selbst zur Legende erklärte: der Pianist und Komponist Jelly Roll Morton.



    1890 in New Orleans geboren, zieht es ihn später nach Chicago, hier gründet Morton Anfang der 20er Jahre die Red Hot Peppers. Seine in New Orleans gewachsenen Beziehungen zur Halb- und Unterwelt pflegt er auch in der „Windy City“. Wenn Morton nicht gerade spielt, verdient er sein Geld als Zuhälter, Schmuggler und Boxpromoter. Sein Auftreten gleicht dem eines Gangsters, stets einen Revolver in der Tasche und mit einem Diamanten im Goldzahn. Als ein Moderator einer Radiosendung W.C. Handy zum „Erfinder des Jazz“ erklärt, schreibt ein gekränkter Jelly einen Brief an das Magazin Downbeat und unterschreibt mit den Worten: „Jelly Roll Morton. Schöpfer des Jazz und der Stomps. Der Welt größter Komponist von Hot Tunes.“

    Lennie Tristano - Der Cool Jazz Pianist

    Lennie Tristano war einer der ersten Jazz-Pädagogen. Der blinde Pianist experimentierte mit freier Improvisation und neuen Aufnahme-Techniken. Vor allem aber repräsentierte er die "Tristano-Schule": eine weiße, intellektuelle Variante des Cool Jazz.



    Tristano wird als Sohn italienischer Einwanderer in Chicago geboren. Mit zehn erblindet, studiert er klassische Musik, beginnt parallel Jazz zu spielen – und zu unterrichten. Für seine selbsternannten „Jünger“ ist Tristano ihr „Meister“. Der spielt nicht nur cool, sondern auch Bebop. 1949 schreibt er Geschichte: „Intuition“, eine freie Improvisation, Vorwegnahme dessen, was Ornette Coleman zehn Jahre später kreieren wird. Seine Experimente sorgen für Aufhorchen und Kontroversen: Als er im Studio Tonspuren übereinanderlegt, den Klang verändert und die Band-Geschwindigkeit variiert, heißt es, er kreiere ein „künstliches Produkt“. Lennie Tristano fühlt sich unverstanden und zieht sich immer mehr zurück. Seine Schule löst er 1956 auf.

    "Er war die Beatles seiner Zeit." (George Wein). Und der "King of Swing". Ob mit kleinen Gruppen oder seiner Big Band, ob in ballrooms oder der Carnegie Hall: Der Klarinettist Benny Goodman verhalf einer ganzen Generation, das Tanzbein zu schwingen.



    1935 macht Goodman Aufnahmen in ungewöhnlicher Instrumentierung: Klarinette, Piano, Schlagzeug. Da das Dreiergespann mit Teddy Wilson und Gene Krupa großen Anklang findet, entschließt er sich, das Trio ins Konzert-Programm seines Orchesters zu integrieren. Die erste landesweite Tournee endet mit einem umjubelten Konzert, das als Geburtsstunde des Swing gilt. Kurz darauf lädt das Trio den Vibrafonisten Lionel Hampton ein und formiert das legendäre Goodman Quartett. Inzwischen als „King of Swing“ geadelt geht sein Auftritt in der Carnegie Hall in die Annalen ein, die Krönung der Swing-Ära. Selbst als diese Epoche längst verblasst ist, tourt er durch die ganze Welt, nunmehr auch in Hollywood verewigt – im Film „The Benny Goodman Story".

    Louis Armstrong - Der Popstar des Jazz

    Für die Welt war er einfach nur "Satchmo", Louis Armstrong: der berühmteste Jazzmusiker aller Zeiten und eine Ikone des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als erster Improvisator des Jazz schrieb der Trompeter Geschichte und wurde als singender Entertainer zum Popstar.



    In seinen frühen Hot Five- und Hot Seven-Formationen tritt an die Stelle der üblichen Kollektiv-Improvisation aller Musiker erstmals das Solo eines Einzelnen – Grundlage für ein Wesensmerkmal des Jazz als einer individuell geprägten Ausdrucksform. Und Armstrong schreibt wieder Jazz-Geschichte, als er mit der Stimme improvisierend den ersten Scat des Jazz aufnimmt. Er wechselt vom Kornett zur Trompete und immer häufiger zum Gesangsmikrofon – und wird zum Star. Satchmo ist nicht mehr nur der brillante Instrumentalist mit unvergleichlichem Ton: Das Publikum liebt seine Reibeisenstimme, sein breites Grinsen, das wohlinszenierte Rollen seiner Augen und das weiße Taschentuch, mit dem er sich den Schweiß abwischt. Seine Hörerschaft will den Sunnyboy Satchmo – und bekommt ihn…

    Mary Lou Williams - First Lady of Jazz

    Ihr Spiel atmete Jazz-Geschichte: Spirituals, Ragtime, Swing und Bebop, die Pianistin schrieb Messen, arrangierte für Big Bands und experimentierte mit der Avantgarde. Und Mary Lou Williams war eine Wegbereiterin der Gleichberechtigung von Frauen im Jazz.



    Zwölf Jahre lang war sie Pianistin und Hauptkomponistin von Andy Kirks Twelve Clouds of Joy. Als gefragte Arrangeurin arbeitete Williams u.a. für Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington und Dizzy Gillespie und schrieb drei Messen, gedacht als „Musik für die Seele und den Frieden“. Auch mit dem Free Jazz setzte sie sich – kritisch – auseinander und spielte in der Carnegie Hall ein Duo mit Cecil Taylor. Für ihre musikalischen Verdienste, aber auch für ihre Vorreiter-Rolle für Musikerinnen kürt sie das Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. posthum zur „First Lady of Jazz“ – und ruft eine seit 1996 jährlich stattfindende Veranstaltung ins Leben, auf der ausschließlich Frauen auftreten: das Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival.

    Herbie Hancock - The Chameleon

    "Chameleon": Sein Hit ist nach einem Tier benannt, das blitzschnell die Farbe wechseln kann - wandlungsfähig wie Herbie Hancock. Der Einfluss des Pianisten auf Jazz, Funk und Pop macht ihn zu einem der einflussreichsten Musiker des 20. Jahrhunderts.



    Anfangs – nach eigenen Worten - ein „Jazz-Snob“, weitet sich wenig später sein Horizont: Miles Davis öffnet ihm die Ohren für Anderes und macht ihn zum Pianisten seines Quintetts. Danach baut Hancock eine beeindruckende Solo-Karriere auf. Erst zieht es ihn in avantgardistische Elektro-Gefilde, dann wechselt er zum Funk. Ohne den Jazz zu vernachlässigen, steht in den 80ern der nächste Stilbruch an – und bringt die Puristen zur Verzweiflung: Der Keyboarder flirtet mit Disco-Pop und Hiphop, sein Hit „Rockit“ wird zur Hymne der Breakdance-Szene. In den letzten Jahren hat sich der praktizierende Buddhist immer stärker weltmusikalischen Einflüssen geöffnet und wird zu einem glühenden Verfechter multikultureller Verständigung. Am 12. April konnte Herbie Hancock seinen 83. Geburtstag feiern.

    Er spielte drei Saxofone gleichzeitig - so etwas hatte niemand zuvor gehört. Für manche nur eine "Zirkusnummer", buchten Veranstalter ihn als "Sensation". Mit viel Seele schlug Roland Kirk eine Brücke vom New Orleans Jazz über Soul bis zum Free Jazz.



    Sein eigentliches Markenzeichen geht auf eine nächtliche Vision zurück. Er träumt davon, drei Saxophone gleichzeitig zu spielen. Am folgenden Tag sucht Kirk ein Musikgeschäft auf, im Keller des Ladens stößt er auf zwei historische Blasinstrumente, wie sie in spanischen Militärbands benutzt wurden: Manzello und Stritch. Mit einer speziellen Technik gelingt es ihm, das Tenorsaxophon mit der linken und die beiden anderen Instrumente mit der rechten Hand zu spielen. Für manche nur eine „Zirkusnummer“, buchten Veranstalter ihn als „Sensation“. Mit viel Seele schlug Rahsaan Roland Kirk eine Brücke vom New Orleans Jazz über Soul bis zum Free Jazz. Für ihn war all das kein „Jazz“, er zog den Terminus "Black Classical Music" vor.
