The Picky Eating Blame Game: What’s Actually True (And What’s Not)

“You’re creating a picky eater.” “It’s the parents’ fault.” 😤

If you’ve ever heard this (or thought it about yourself), this episode is for you.

I’m tackling the most guilt-inducing belief in the picky eating world: that parents CAUSE picky eating. And I’m here to tell you—it’s mostly BS.

Here’s what’s actually true: You didn’t wake up one day and decide to be a short-order cook for fun. You started making rescue meals because your kid was ALREADY picky. The chicken came from the egg, not the other way around 🐔

    In this episode:

    • Why picky eating is biologically normal (autonomy is actually a GOOD thing!)
    • The truth about how your response matters—but doesn’t cause pickiness
    • Why two kids in the same house can be completely different eaters
    • The one twin picky, one twin not scenario that proves it’s not your fault
    • What parents DO have influence over (hint: how long it lasts + how bad it gets)

Here’s the thing: You can say “just try it” to your kid and they might spiral into shame. Meanwhile, Julia across town says the exact same thing and her kid tries it. Same words. Different kids. Not. Your. Fault. 💯

BUT—while it’s not your fault they’re picky, it IS your responsibility to help them (just like reading, sleep, or potty training).

The good news? There ARE tools that work. You don’t have to wait it out hoping they’ll “grow out of it” (spoiler: check my DMs from adults who never did 😬).

From Barely Eating to “Heaps of Food” in One Month

“Just wait it out. It’s just a phase.” 🙄

Sound familiar? That’s what Millie’s pediatrician told her when she complained that her daughter had stopped eating. So she waited… and waited… and waited.

Until she finally decided she was DONE sitting on her hands hoping something would magically change.

In this special New Year’s episode, I’m sharing Millie’s story—and why January is actually the PERFECT time to reverse picky eating (especially after the holiday cookie/cracker/candy spiral we’ve all been living through).

    In this episode:

    • Why “it’s just a phase” keeps parents stuck for months (or years!) 😤
    • The real reason your kid is picky (hint: it’s NOT the problem you think it is)
    • Why stopping pressure alone doesn’t work—and what actually does
    • How nutrition affects tantrums, sleep, sickness, learning, and mood swings
    • The 10 root causes of picky eating (most kids have 2-3 of them)

Here’s the truth: picky eating isn’t the problem—it’s a SYMPTOM of something deeper. You can spend all your energy mopping up the puddle, or you can fix the pipe 🔧

Millie saw results in ONE WEEK. Within a month, her daughter was eating “heaps of food like someone turned on a switch.” No more stress. Relaxed food culture. Normal weight gain. (And she’s not special—she just used a method that works!)

3 Things You’re Asking Your Picky Eater to Do That They Literally Can’t

You’re asking a reasonable thing. Your kid refuses. You get frustrated. They melt down. Sound familiar? 😤

Here’s the plot twist: what if the problem isn’t that your kid is being stubborn—it’s that you’re unknowingly asking them to do something their brain literally can’t do yet?

In this episode, I’m breaking down 3 things parents expect picky eaters to do that they simply CAN’T. And when we don’t realize these expectations are unrealistic, we accidentally create the perfect storm for power struggles, meltdowns, and even worse picky eating.

    In this episode:

    • Why your kid can’t “just eat it” even though they ate it last week 🤯
    • The anticipatory hunger myth (they can’t eat now to avoid being hangry later!)
    • Why they can’t compare raspberries to strawberries like we can
    • The hunger/fullness articulation trap that leads to pressure tactics
    • How too-high expectations kill the ONE thing picky eaters need most: confidence

This isn’t about lowering the bar—it’s about understanding their actual developmental capabilities so you can set them up for SUCCESS instead of frustration 💪

When we ask too much, kids either shut down and get pickier OR people-please their way through meals (neither is what we want!).

✨ Ready to stop the guessing game?

My FREE training teaches you my proven root cause approach to reverse picky eating. You’ll learn how to understand what your kid is actually experiencing at the table and how to show up in a way that helps them eat new foods. Click here to sign up!

If I Had to Start Over with my Picky Eater

If you could go back and start over with your picky eater, what would you do differently? 🤔

In this episode, I’m sharing the 5 things I wish I’d known from the beginning—whether your kid just started getting picky, you’re in the trenches right now, or you’re trying to prevent it with a baby who’s eating everything.

The best part? You can start doing ALL of these things today. No time machine required 😉

    In this episode:

    • Why embracing the MESS is the #1 most powerful thing you can do (touch before taste!)
    • The hunger window mistake I made that created meltdowns at the table
    • How my anxiety was secretly fueling my son’s picky eating 😬
    • Why doing too much FOR your kid actually tells them you don’t trust them
    • The risky play your kid needs to build confidence with new foods

This isn’t just about what I did wrong—it’s about understanding the ROOT CAUSE of picky eating. Because sometimes it’s not a strategy issue… it’s a nervous system safety issue 🧠
