    «Alla fine del Medioevo la servitù della gleba era scomparsa dappertutto in Europa; tranne in Inghilterra. Lì la maggior parte dei contadini erano legati per nascita a un lord o a un monastero, e non potevano cambiare vita senza il permesso del padrone. Qualcuno dei loro parroci predicava che questo non era giusto, che tutti gli uomini sono stati creati uguali, e che al tempo di Adamo ed Eva non esistevano né servi né gentiluomini. E così, i contadini di tutta l’Inghilterra si misero in marcia verso Londra, per andare dal re e costringerlo ad abolire la servitù, e a dichiarare che sul suolo inglese tutti gli uomini erano liberi e uguali.» (festivaldellamente.it)

    «Le due flotte che si affrontarono a Lepanto erano il prodotto di una tecnologia affinata nel corso dei secoli e di colossali investimenti da parte dei tre imperi, l’ottomano, il veneziano e lo spagnolo, che insieme governavano tutto il mondo mediterraneo. La costruzione delle 400 galere fu possibile solo grazie all’esistenza di impianti industriali all’avanguardia come gli arsenali di Venezia e di Istanbul, e allo sfruttamento spietato di risorse forestali in via di esaurimento; i governi dovettero ricorrere a mezzi estremi per reclutare i 60.000 rematori necessari. Eppure, quando le due flotte si incontrarono era praticamente certo che una delle due sarebbe stata cancellata in poche ore…»
