    Episode 159: Steve, Pobs and Ted from NED

    This week we have a massive episode wrapping up the 2026 Port Lincoln Tuna Classic! We are joined by Ted, Pobs and Steve who fished aboard NED, the winning boat in the Calcutta Competition! The boys tell us the story of their weekend and how they caught a big fish in an unusual way that netted them a $140k prize! The boys were super deserving winners, have great individual stories and came together at the last minute to form the winning combination!

    We also run through the rest of the Competition which was a lot slower than in previous years, including lots of other prize winners, our own efforts to catch 3 Tuna across the weekend and announced the winner of the Socorro 10,000 from Shimano!

    We also have all the news in SA fishing, including:

    • An update on the Algal Bloom and how it is now impacting Port Hughes. 
    • A Tuna pen dies off after it is dragged through some discoloured water.
    • A couple of amazing recaptures from SAFTAG including a 1.4m Cod that was caught after 11 years

    We also look forward to Easter and give a report on the state's fishing ahead of the long weekend!

    This week we are joined by Andy Farrer, Skipper of Catfish, who has only missed 3 events in the Port Lincoln Tuna Classics 20 year history. He talks us through some of his successful years, why he loves the competition and how he is preparing for this weekend's competition. Andy really sums up what is great about the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic, he competes really hard on the water and then enjoys the social side of the event, having a drink and bantering with other competitors as much as anyone!

    We are also lucky to be joined for part of the news segment by Asher Dezsery from RecFish SA to discuss the announcements made by Peter Malinauskas in the lead up to the election. Asher fills us in on what is planned for the new Recreational Fishing Authority, what RecFish can do with further funding over the next 4 years and also touches on what the Opposition has proposed if they are successful and also an update on tagging of fish for future rounds of the Let’s Go Fishing Competition!

    We also explain a competition we are running for our listeners to celebrate the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic, we are giving away a Shimano Socorro 10,000 (which is also our tackle item of the week) for whoever can get ‘closest to the pin’ of how many Tuna our boat will catch over the 2 day weekend!     Our fishing report is dominated by Port Lincoln fishing including an update on the Tuna fishing prior to the competition, the flathead season is upon us and Jamie Crawford showed the IFish team the best of the fishing around Port Lincoln with Whiting, Crabs, Nannygai and Sharks all playing the game!

    This week we are joined by Lincoln Kirby, who runs the hugely successful Barra or Blue Charters in the NT. He is able to tell us about his own fishing journey, discuss what to expect on a day out fishing for Barra or in the Blue Water and also discusses the iconic Million Dollar Barra Competition. There are 11 Million Dollar Barra and a further 82 tagged fish worth $10k each still swimming around, with a further $100k up for grabs for the biggest of these tagged fish caught throughout March. This is an epic comp and something we would love to enter one year!

    We also have a wrap up of our week fishing around Black Point on the Yorke Peninsula as well as looking forward to the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic in a couple of weeks. 

    As always there is plenty of news in SA fishing, including:

    • Round 4 of the Lets Go Fishing Comp is coming soon including a Murray Cod forum featuring Steve Starling
    • PIRSA have caught a man with 47 King George Whiting, many hidden and many undersize. 
    • The Coroners Court has recommended that lifejackets become mandatory on all boats under 7 metres.

    This week we are joined by freshwater fishing guru Lucas Weaver. He is the RecFish SA Director for the Riverland and Reservoirs and has caught more Callop and Murray Cod than most! He has recently been involved in tagging a lot of fish for the ‘Lets Go Fishing Competition’ and also presented in the recent RecFish SA Forum on all things freshwater fishing. He is also heavily involved in the Lower Murray Lure Fishing Club and also tells us about some of his Saltwater catches to show his versatility!

    Some of our listeners have got around our push for some more listener engagement and have sent in voice messages. Thanks to Isiah Luther Nunerley for his message about whether a lumo bead may have led to a shark biting him off, Beau Lavigne asked about good conditions to launch at Victor Harbor and Anton Read had some suggestions about future merch including the idea of custom prop flags.

    This week we are joined by Kane Cross, who recently turned a small Salmon Trout that he caught locally in his home town of Robe into a $10,000 prize as the winner of Round 2 of the Let’s Go Fishing Competition! Kane tells us the story of how he caught the winning fish and how he's going to spend the money as well as fills us in on his life as a Professional Cray Fisherman and some of his stories from beach fishing off the famous Long Beach! A great chat and something to motivate us all to get out and have a crack at winning Round 3 that has just got underway!

When he's not catching fish or sharing fishing content, he is working at TackleWorld Port Lincoln, so he certainly knows all there is to know about fishing all across the Eyre Peninsula. From Garfish off the rocks using plastic Maggots for bait, Massive Port Augusta Kingfish, land based Sharks and Giant Southern Bluefin Tuna - Jake has done it all and loves to capture plenty of footage to share! A great chat with plenty of insight into all things Port Lincoln fishing, Reel SA is well worth tuning in to!

    • Australian Bass stocking into Tod Reservoir near Port Lincoln, while there is going to be more stocked fish and better access to Myponga Reservoir.

    This week we are joined by Danny Simpson, a self employed consultant working widely across the Recreational Fishing Sector both here in SA and across Australia. Danny talks about his own fishing and some of the work he has done over recent years, having worked extensively throughout the sector, including Murray Cod management, implementing recreational fishing in our reservoirs and he currently represents the Rec fishing community on the Marine Scale Fishery Management Advisory Committee. Danny has also just joined the RecFish SA board having also been involved in the past and he also talks about the fun times he has had working part time at SportFishing Scene in recent years.

    We have all the latest news in rec fishing across SA, including:

    • RecFish SA pushing for more tagging of Mulloway. 
    • Details around Round 2 of the Lets Go Fishing Competition, as well as another monthly prize winner and details around the next Fishing Forum.
    • The government has bought Mundoo Island in an effort to boost the environment.
    • Pushing for funding to keep the Cape Jaffa Marina open.

    This week we are joined by Andy Burnell, the man behind the hugely popular Crab.e.cam social media account, where he documents heaps of amazing underwater footage from his GoPro mounted in his crab net. What started as a simple idea has grown to over 32k Facebook followers and over 175,000 youtube views. Andy talks us through how he sets up the go pro to get top quality video and photos, chats about Scuba and Free diving and talks us through what he has witnessed with the devastation of the algal bloom, but now luckily he is seeing some signs of improvement. 

    We have plenty of news to cover as well:

    • The bag limits of certain species in the different gulfs have returned to normal after a temporary reduction.
    • The 3rd prize in this round of the Lets Go Fishing Competition has been won in a tight race for the prize!
    • Goolwa Beach Cockles remain open for bait only.
    • A reminder about cleaning any diving gear and pots to stop the spread of the Abalone Viral Ganglioneutritis from the South East.
    • Murray Cod Season opens on January 1.
    • Algal Bloom numbers improving across much of the state, with KI the exception, including some footage of a sick looking Great White off Island Beach.

    This week we are joined again by Steve Toome and Ash White, the boys behind the Port Lincoln Tuna Classic as we look forward to next years event to be held in March. The boys talk us through the early preparations for the next competition, a few new things to look forward to as well as all of the regular favourites that make it one of the great weekends in the calendar! They also share there fishing exploits across 2025 with both of the the boys catching trophy fish in Queensland and we also talk about the arrival of this years school tuna season in SA!

    • Dredging under way to re open the Cape Jaffa Marina.
    • The first $10k prize is won in the 'Lets Go Fishing' Competition as a Salmon Trout wins a Robe local a huge prize!
    • Western Australia has also had big fishing restrictions put in place across their coastline.
    • Oyster Shell collection for restoration of shellfish reefs. 
    • Seeds for Snapper is underway for this year.
    • ANSA and Recfish SA Citizen Science inter club competition announced to be held at Bundaleer Reservoir in early 2026.

    This week we celebrate our big 150th episode with a great guest, Paul Wilton, the President of the Game Fishing Club of South Australia! Paul gives us an insight into how the club has changed and grown over recent years, some of the competitions they run including the Wirrina Tuna Slam in February and also talks about the social side to the Game Fishing Club. He has also caught plenty of fish himself and is even nice enough to invite us and any prospective new members to join them at the club for one of their monthly social nights.

    To celebrate our 150th episode we reminisce on some of our favourite episodes over the past few years and also look forward to the next big milestones to come!

    We have plenty of news in SA fishing including:

    • RecFish SA holding a Carp fishing competition at Mawson Lakes this weekend!
    • The ‘Let’s Go Fishing Competition’ is still running with the $10k prize still up for grabs, the next round starts soon with another lot of tagged fish to target.
