Korriban, the ancient homeworld of the Sith Species does not have a history filled with Hope. It's past is tainted with the blood of the fallen and the shadow of the dark side of the Force. But even with the native race, the sith people and their entire ability to naturally wield the power of the force, extinction was inevitable. But they did prosper for a time. The Sith People did not share anything in common with The Lords of the Sith we see in the Movies like Darth Vader and Darth Sidious, until the hundred-year darkness and the banishment of the dark Jedi exiles. This is a time period known as the hundred-year darkness, Long before the great hyperspace war from the Tales of the Jedi comics, this is where the very Jedi we love from the movies, their very ancestors, saw many disagreements in how the Force should be used and categorized. These debates would turn voilent and eventually Jedi would fight jedi, and cross lightsaers amongst themselves. This is referred to as the Great Schisms. And there were a few of these schisms that basically turned into civil wars. You would see Jedi use the dark side in the most horrific way, like mutating animals and people and transforming them into abominations - which a lot of the light-sided jedi believed to be sacrilegious. Basically you just insulted the force and life itself in the most disrespectful way ever. Eventually, the Jedi did vanquish their dark jedi brothers and sisters. But the jedi didn't execute these jedi who were on the losing side of the war. They only captured them and banished them. While many think this act is very noble and kind - the jedi had no idea how devastating this decision would be. This is how the first Sith lords would be created and the jedi would never be able to take back this choice, for it would eventually, thousands of years later, cause the very destruction of the jedi order. This is how the dark jedi exiles came to be known as the First Dark Lords of the Sith.
