Episodic reviews of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
It all comes down to “Four Minutes”. Four minutes for Midge to either set up her future or prove all of the naysayers right. Listen as Paul and Caroline finish up their coverage of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel!
A famous visitor to the Gordon Ford show gives Midge a little leverage, providing a path forward onto Gordon’s stage – but Susie has to be willing to help. Meanwhile, Abe makes an earth-shattering realization about Midge, women in general, and the changing world.
A visiting star to Gordon’s show becomes impressed with Midge, opening a door opens as another sadly closes. Meanwhile, Abe discusses a well-documented quirk of Weismann genetics with the family.
Through a series of flash-forwards and time-shifts, we get to fill in many years between the show’s main timeline in 1961 and 1990, the year of the roast honoring Susie at the New York Friar’s Club. Since Suie refused to actually come to a roast, she insisted that people could only give testimonials about their relationships, not actually roast her. But her friends couldn’t resist the opportunity, hence the “Testi-Roastial”.
In “The Pirate Queen”, Midge tries to sub in for Gordon on a sponsor’s dinner cruise, but things, and some jerk’s jacket, get out of hand bringing her back ashore to find out if she still has a career. Meanwhile, Zelda and Janusz tie the knot in an intimate and eye-opening ceremony.
The fourth episode of Maisel‘s final season, “Susan”, gave us what the Sherman-Palladinos have wanted to show us the entire time – but haven’t been able to fit in yet: A full-on musical production complete with their trademark quirks and ridiculous meta-feeling observation that while they apparently really love musicals, they also know they are somewhat silly. While we may be in the minority of fans that actually enjoys the musicals they produce, we also missed the presence of a flash-forward in this episode. Plus, a crack in the armor hiding Susie’s backstory jumped in her path.
Following Midge’s usual pattern, her mouth gets ahead of her brain when Gordon flubs the first joke she gets into the monolog. Meanwhile, Joel has to tell his parents about Mei and the baby. Wondering where “Typos and Torsos” come into it? Be sure to check out Abe’s grandfatherly advice to young Ethan.
First-day jitters on the Gordon Ford show as a writer has Midge in search of the perfect outfit that can allow for both sitting all day and attending post-work drinks. Reliable Susie stands ready to help – even at 4:56am. The rest of the day plays out like one might expect given that inauspicious start.
Picking up the morning after the season 4 finale, “Go Forward” has Susie making some adjustments to Midge’s previous plans to get her career back on track. Meanwhile, Thanksgiving dinner presents everyone with the unwelcome news of a pending divorce!?! Paul has his doubts that this is anything but a narrative tool to ratchet up the drama in Joel’s roller-coaster life.
In this latest podcast, Paul and Caroline dissect the 5th and 6th episodes of the 4th season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. While Susie takes her management company up a notch, Midge tries to make peace with her old rival, Sophie Lennon.
Between seasons 3 and 4, actor Brian Tarantina tragically died, leaving the story of his character unresolved. In “Everything is Bellmore”, Amy and Dan deal with his death beautifully by allowing his loss to serve as a source of inspiration to propel Susie’s story for what’s probably the rest of the series. Meanwhile, Midge exerts her influence at her new gig emceeing the local strip club, The Wolford.
