In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault, we celebrate the Series Finale of Dick’s Picks as well as the Series Finale of 36 From The Vault. Featuring a complete show from Philadelphia, PA on 9/21/72, we also hear segments of 9/3/72 from Boulder, CO. One of the greatest Dick’s Picks of all time, it’s a fitting conclusion to the series and yet another showcase of the brilliance of September 1972.

Disc One features the majority of Set One from 9/21/72 which includes a brilliant “Bird Song” as well a stunning take on “Loser.” A loose and vibey “China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider” showcases the standards heavy Set I played with exceptional verve. Disc Two straddles Set One and Two from 9/21/71 and is highlighted by an outstanding “Playing In The Band” closer before “He’s Gone>Truckin’” brings us into the second frame. 

An elongated 4+hr show, the staple of Disc Three is an absolutely incredible “Dark Star>Morning Dew.” Nearly 50min of stunning music, including 35+min of deep 1972 jamming, this is one of the greatest pieces of music released in the entire Dick’s Picks series. Disc Four closes out the Spectrum show before giving us a three song snapshot from Folsom Field with “He’s Gone> The Other One> Wharf Rat.” And with that, we’ve finally reached the end of the Dick’s Picks series. In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault, we visit 1971 for the very first time since Dick’s Picks Vol. 2, for a very special set of shows, unheard of by any fan until 2005. Featuring the complete shows from 8/7/71 in San Diego, CA and 8/24/71 in Chicago, IL, along with snippets of 8/6/71 in Hollywood, CA, it’s a fascinating peek into the evolving nature of The Dead on the cusp of their 1972 renaissance period.

Disc One features the complete first set from 8/24 + the “Truckin’” Set II Opener. Disc One is highlighted by a brilliant “Hard To Handle,” making its Dick’s Picks debut. On Disc Two we hear a tight take on “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” plus a stunning “Sing Me Back Home.” The highlight might very well be the incredible jam out of “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” which then segues into “Johnny B Goode.”

Disc Three picks up the thread in Chicago and features a gorgeous cut of Pigpen’s “Empty Pages,” alongside a still-in-progress “Brown-Eyed Women.” Later, “Not Fade Away -> GDTRFB -> NFA” shines in the fusion between country jammin’ and punkish psychedelia. 

Disc Four closes the set with a segment from the 8/6 show in Hollywood and features some of the only improv of the set in the way of “The Other One -> Me & My Uncle -> The Other One.” A haunting “Morning Dew” leads to a 25min “Lovelight” closer which shines a light on the wonders of Pigpen in the twilight of his life.

In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault, we dip into the Fall of 1977, because we haven’t explored enough of 1977 in this series. Featuring the complete show from Rochester, NY on 11/5/77, we also hear segments of 11/2/77 from Toronto. A volume that puzzles Rob and Steve, we wonder a bit about why this show was selected in the series, while also admiring the subtle shifts we hear from the band between May and November 1977.

Disc One features the complete first set from 11/5 and is highlighted by a stunning “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” alongside a vibrant “Big River” which features some stunning leads from Jerry before Mickey & Billy push it into a disco space. 

Disc Two features the first half of S2 from 11/5 before providing snippets of 11/2. In the 11/5 half we hear one of the best “Take A Step Back’s” ever alongside a gorgeous “Eyes Of The World.” The 11/2 half showcases “St. Stephen” alongside a ripping “Around & Around.” (That was not a typo)

Finally, Disc Three is highlighted by the back half of 11/5’s S2 with a mellow take on “Estimated Prophet>He’s Gone>Rhythm Devils>The Other One>Black Peter>Sugar Magnolia.” We close with “Lazy Lightning>Supplication Blues” from 11/2. It’s a confounding release - especially this deep in the series - but Rob and Steve provide the kind of insight needed to make it shine.

In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we find the band just a few weeks past the shocking brilliance of the Dick’s Picks Vol. 20 two-show set from Fall 1976, here in Oakland, CA for a pair of opening gigs for The Who from the “Day On The Green” at the Oakland Coliseum Stadium. Two completely day lit shows, we hear the band try to channel energy through surprising segues and upbeat selections, crafting one of the more BBQ appropriate Dick’s Picks of the larger series.

Diss One, from 10/9, finds us in familiar territory as the Berry bookend opens the show before the greatest Grateful Dead song of all time is played and later “Jed.” The disc is highlighted by a gorgeous outro on “Looks Like Rain” and a loose & jammy “Scarlet Begonias,” just months away from its meeting point with “Fire On The Mountain.” Disc Two is highlighted by a phenomenal “Help -> Slip -> Drums -> Samson -> Slip -> Franklin’s” showcasing the brilliant suite in 1976. 

Disc Three, from 10/10, features some rarities before closing with a wild & gorgeous “Dancin -> Wharf Rat -> Dancin.” Disc Four features another sandwich, with Playin’ leading the way this time around: “Playin -> Drums -> The Wheel -> Space -> The Other One -> Stella -> Playin.” On the whole it’s a bit of an underwhelming volume in terms of transcendent moments, but it showcases The Dead in a more traditional 70’s classic rock setting, while giving many dreams of what “Space” would sound like at 3pm.

In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we explore the world of Mr. Sob Rock himself, John Mayer. Focusing on the peak of his solo career, we discuss the backstory of the future Dead & Co. lead guitarist, and try to better understand his path from pop rock to The Dead. Focusing on his 2008 LP of the December 8, 2007 show in LA, Where The Light Is, we hear his DMB side, his Blues Trio side, and his full band, Sob Rock side. 

Disc One highlight’s Mayer’s origins with a focus on his original hits through solo acoustic performances. “Neon” stands out as one of the best cuts of the record. In addition, we hear samples of Mayer’s Blues Trio with “Who Did You Think I Was” and “Vultures” showcasing depth to Mayer’s Blues interests.

On Disc Two we hear Mayer’s performance with this larger live band. Running through some of his biggest songs from Continuum, we hear the differences between Mayer’s experimental ambitions and his more produced solo approaches. Figuring out the path from here to Dead & Co. is one of the special aspects of this episode.

In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we traverse to the heartland of America for a banner show from the wild Summer of 1982 at Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, WI. Featuring a hammy Bob, some heavy playing from Brent, and a lyrical albeit haggard Jerry, it’s one of the best pictures we have of what made the 80’s such a compelling and confounding time for The Dead. 

Disc One begins with a jamband staple, the sandwich jam, wherein “The Music Never Stopped” segues in and out of “Sugaree.” Elsewhere Jerry shines again on “Big River,” Brent beams through his Hammond on “CC Rider,” and the whole band connects on “Let It Grow.” While there are arguments to be made that aspects of other shows in the larger Summer ‘82 tour should have been included instead, getting a full First Set from The Dead showcases the highs and lows of the eras. 

On Disc Two we hear a very typical 80s/90s set two in the sense that “Playing In The Band” bookends a segment of “Drums/Space” and a gorgeous version of “The Wheel” emerges from the interstellar jamming. We close with a stunning take on “Morning Dew” before “One More Saturday Night” & “US Blues” takes us home. It’s a breezy and summery cut from the larger series, and one that showcases an era often overlooked in Dead history but clearly has some gems to mine.

In this week’s episode of 36 From The Vault we find the band playing a Sunday - Tuesday run in late-Summer 1974. The jams are deep, the country is in turmoil, and idiots are climbing the fence. This volume hears The Dead at perhaps their most exhausted, two months shy of their hiatus, but willing to explore the outer realms of their musical ideas. Like two of the three previous ‘74 Dick’s Picks, this one works like a playlist, capturing some of the best - and some of the most questionable moments - of the mid-Atlantic run.

Disc One begins with a wild 25min dive into expansive 70’s Miles jamming by way of “Playin’ In The Band” before moving into a groovy “Scarlet Begonias.” Elsewhere “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” shows off its 1974 breezy jamming. Disc Two is highlighted by a mellow “Weather Report Suite” which then moves into a jam proper that, while not as extended as the Dick’s Picks 12 version, still highlights the sense that anything could be jammed amidst the Watergate scandal. 

On Disc Three we hear a stunning “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo -> It Must Have Been The Roses” segue. Later, we hear “Truckin’” take over the set through a vast jamming segment that touches on “The Other One” and “Space” before moving into a gorgeous “Stella Blue.” Disc Four is in the running for the best Discs of the entire Dick’s Picks series. One of the greatest “Eyes Of The World” ever kicks us off before moving into a 38min “Playin’ In The Band -> Scarlet Begonias -> Playin’ In The Band” and then finally, “Uncle John’s Band” closes us out. It’s a stunning release for jamheads and a vivid picture of The Dead at the end of their hallowed 1972-1974 single drummer run.
