In this monthly Healthy Her segment, host Amelia Phillips answers listener questions. This episode covers questions from:

    1. Amanda: I’ve started on a healthy eating plan, cleared out all the junk food and improved my diet considerably. However instead of feeling better I feel worse! I have been getting terrible bloating, constipation and sometimes tummy pains. What is going on? I really want to improve my diet but something is not working.

    2. Catherine: I am so confused about night shades, there is so much talk that they increase our inflammation so I have been avoiding them, but it’s hard to, as they are in so much. Love to know your thoughts.
    3. Tanya: Do you have recommendations for protein powder & where to purchase it as I have never bought it or used it before. We have Woolworths & Coles & Chemist in my nearest town.

What does a Dexa scan tells us and should we get one? With Brendan Barry

Our body composition matters when it comes to our health. Understanding how much of us is lean active tissue, knowing what our bone density is, and what proportion of our fat sits under the skin (subcutaneous) versus between our organs (the more harmful visceral) is valuable information to track over time.

Host Amelia Phillips and exercise physiologist Brendan Barry discuss the technology of  DEXA scans and how they can be a helpful tool in tracking, and motivating us to stay healthy. They discuss what the test measures, the cost, the ideal percentages our body composition should sit at, and what age we should start having bone density tests.

Key measurements to track on Dexa:

Body Fat % (20-33%), Lean muscle mass (over 40kg), Bone Density, ALHI or Appendicular Lean Mass to Height Ratio (ALM/Height2) should be at 5.5 for women or higher.
