    6. Where to from here?

Well, we’ve come to the end of our journey, and what an adventure it’s been!

Barry takes a look back at what we’ve learned throughout the series and, with a little help from his friends, reminds us why environmental sustainability is important, and what things we can start doing to live our best lives and ensure a sustainable future for our great, great, great grandchildren.

    Series produced by Ali Aitken.

    5. Building the foundations for a better future

Having been a builder for a few years now, Barry is passionate about urban architecture. But with the temperature and our population steadily rising, is it really working in our favour?

He’s called in Robert Puflett, principal at international architecture and design firm ThomsonAdsett to get some answers.

Barry and Rob discuss where we’re going wrong with the current built environment, and how sustainable designs are essential for our future. https://thomsonadsett.com/

For Owen Barbour-Woods, it really is a material world. He has started a sustainable clothing company, making protective workwear out of hemp. Owen tells Barry why we should be using hemp rather than cotton for our clothes.

You can find out more about the company at https://kempt.com.au/

    4. Unpacking the corporate perspective

When it comes to climate change and emissions, what part do the big corporations play? And are they doing anything about it?

Barry wants some answers so he’s going straight to the top at one of the biggest corporations in the world - IKEA. He sits down with Australia CEO Jan Gardberg to talk about the state of the environment, why IKEA believes waste shouldn’t be seen as waste but rather a resource, the company’s plans for the future, and kitchens made out of PET bottles.

You might even get some tips from Jan about what he and his family are doing to reduce their carbon footprint.

    3. If we could talk to the animals

In the last couple of eps we’ve been talking about the damage us humans are doing to the planet and the effect it’s having on our lives - but what effect is climate change having on the animal kingdom?

There’s only really one person Barry can talk to about this.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Robert Irwin is older than his 17 years.

He’s leading the way when it comes to making Australia Zoo as green as possible. And it’s working - it’s the most solar powered zoological facility in Australia and one of the most renewable in the world.

He tells Baz why Australia Zoo is about so much more than animals, and why the answer to environmental sustainability is to be as smart as a crocodile!

    2. Why Do We Do the Things We Do?

Last time we looked at what carbon is and why sustainability is important. And this has got Barry thinking – now that we know all of that, why do we keep repeating the same old behaviours? Why do we do things over and over again that we know are bad for us?

That’s not a question Barry can answer, so he’s called in behavioural scientist Kim Borg from BehaviourWorks Australia to get the lowdown.

BehaviourWorks is a behaviour change research unit at Monash Sustainable Development Institute in Melbourne  https://www.behaviourworksaustralia.org/

So, let’s find out if it is possible to trick our brain into patterns which will benefit us AND the planet.

    1. What Is Carbon?

Carbon. It’s a word that’s bandied about a lot when we talk about environmental sustainability. But how many people can honestly say they really know what it is?

To find out more, Barry talks to self-confessed carbon nerd Dr Vanessa Rauland.

Vanessa is passionate about climate change and sustainability. She’s the founder and CEO of ClimateClever which helps homes, schools and businesses reduce their carbon footprint and save money, at the same time ensuring future generations are educated about sustainability. You can find out more about that here - www.climateclever.org

She’s also an Adjunct Research Fellow at Curtin University’s Sustainability Policy Institute in Perth, Western Australia.
