Blue Collar Nation

The Tech Whisperer

Eric and Larry share how their blue collar service business was transformed with a Morning Tech Meeting. Each morning the techs were taught the "soft skills" that increased their communication skills and self awareness which increased their capacity to serve the clients. The daily lessons improved the lives of the owners (Eric and Larry), the technicians, and the clients. The purpose of this podcast is to help small blue collar service business owners gain the awareness and skills to create a culture in their companies where they do not spend all day putting out the fires that the technicians create and spend more time working on building the business they always dreamed of owning.

From Injuries to Insurance: The Real Cost of Safety

Today Eric and Larry sit down with Eric Wick, founder of Safety Team Technologies. Eric breaks down how blue-collar companies can stop bleeding cash from preventable injuries and high workers’ comp. We get real about why paper manuals and sporadic tailgate talks don’t move the needle, how XMOD actually works (and why a single $40k claim can hammer your premiums for three years), and the simple habits that create a safety culture your team buys into. Eric shows how digital, mobile-first training can automate meetings, document everything for OSHA, track hazard assessments, and even gamify participation so it sticks. If you want fewer claims, lower insurance, and crews that go home in one piece, this one’s for you.

    📝 Worksheet: Morning Meeting Mastery

    Section 1: Key Points Recap

    1. Morning Meetings Build Culture
      • They create daily connection points between management and staff.
      • Improve accountability, engagement, and reduce isolation.
    2. Short, Consistent Beats Long, Occasional
      • 10–15 minutes every day is more effective than hour-long sessions once a month.
    3. Structure Matters
      • Use a weekly theme (e.g., Mission Monday, Training Tuesday).
      • Rotate presenters to promote ownership and variety.
    4. ROI Is Clear
      • Reduced turnover = saved hiring and training costs.

    • Decide on meeting time, platform (in-person or Zoom), and schedule.
    • Choose daily themes (e.g., Motivation Monday, Soft Skill Friday).

    Pilot a Week of Meetings

    • Announce a 1-week trial.
    • Collect feedback from the team after each session.

    Track Metrics

    • Pre- and post-implementation: turnover rate, callback frequency, employee satisfaction scores.

    Empower Participation

    • Ask techs or CSRs to lead small segments.
    • Start with simple prompts (e.g., “What’s one win from yesterday?”).

    Use Tools to Help

    • Leverage platforms like Super Tech University to supply soft-skill training content.

    Section 3: Reflection Questions

    • What’s one thing I’d want every team member to hear each day?
    • How can I make our meetings something people want to attend?
    • What’s the biggest cultural issue in my company that daily meetings could help solve?
