Becky Adlington - How recurrent miscarriages led to coeliac disease diagnosis

This week on Oh Crumbs we speak to Olympian swimmer Becky Adlington about her coeliac disease last year. We talked about how her diagnosis came about, adjusting to life on a gluten free diet, the amazing free from community and how she now feels like a totally new person!

PLEASE NOTE: This interview contains conversation about miscarriage and baby loss.

In this episode Becky talks about how her coeliac diagnosis came about after miscarriage and the stillbirth of her daughter Harper, and how she has been campaigning to raise awareness of recurrent miscarriage as a symptom. She also explains how she has been campaigning for support for parents who have experienced baby loss with the charity Petals (link below).

Becky took us through her whole journey adapting to being gluten free, from the difficulties of eating out and worrying about whether or not to test her children for coeliac, to the cost of gluten free food and her thoughts on the prescription ‘postcode lottery’ in the UK.

Oh, and of course in true Sarah and Laura style, we also discussed opening our own Wasabi farm. So tune in to find out what that’s all about!!

Nick Trott - Prescriptions, New Treatments and A Cure For Coeliac Disease?

Happy Oh Crumbs Day!! This week we caught up with coeliac specialist gastroenterologist dietitian Nick Trott, who is based in Sheffield, the leading centre in the UK for coeliac disease. We covered a lot of ground in this episode, from post-coeliac-diagnosis support and advice on supplements, to some new studies on the horizon looking into possible new treatments and even potential cures for coeliac disease.

We chatted about what support people should get post-coeliac-diagnosis in an ideal world, supplements such as calcium and vitamin D, annual reviews for coeliac disease, bone density scans, and what options to look at in the event of a negative coeliac diagnosis.

We also talked about the importance of gluten free prescriptions and how we can keep raising our voices to ensure anyone who needs them can get access - including some success stories where prescription access has been reinstated in areas of the UK, wohooo!

And the question on everyone’s lips - will there be a cure for coeliac disease one day? We talked to Nick about some of the recent studies into a coeliac cure and new potential treatments, and what the realistic timeline could be for any of these becoming available to coeliac patients.
