Stacey Guill – They Still Draw Pictures

Author and researcher Stacey Guill joined us once before to talk about her book “The Stone House in the Canyon,” about Mary Hallock Foote and her history in the Boise area. This time, Stacey is diving deeper into some of the amazing history of Ernest Hemingway. This journey, she takes us to Spain during the Spanish Civil War. During this time of warfare, children and families were part of the casualties. Thousands of children drew photos of what they saw around them. See some of these through Stacey’s eyes with her podcast.

See some of these drawings for yourself, in The Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives, and in the Mandeville Special Collections Library.

Check out Ernest Hemingway’s powerful propaganda historical film, The Spanish Earth.

Stacey and I are working on doing a short film about this, coming soon.

  • Brad Parsons

*LISTENERS PLEASES NOTE THAT STITCHER is going away as a platform for podcasting/distribution 8/29/2023, AS A PART OF CONSOLIDATION.

Brad Parsons joined us for a quick session before he headed to Sawtooth Valley Gathering in Stanley, Idaho. He mentioned he has played there 7 times.

It was great visiting with this songwriter who grew up in Lewiston. He now lives in Astoria, Oregon. I asked about the music scene there, and he said Blind Pilot had pretty much started there. He said there aren’t many clubs there for live music, they sadly lost their favorite music venue.

Brad Parsons is the son of a Preacher, and you can tell he has many stories. You can catch him 6/27 at “Tuesdays on the Creek” at Indian Creek Plaza.

Go backstage with our full visit, below!

Stacey Guill “The Stone House in the Cañon” The story of Mary Hallock Foote

Just minutes from Boise, Idaho, a short drive can take you back over 100 years in history. Listen to author Stacey Guill talk about the life of Mary Hallock Foote. As Mary’s husband Arthur struggled to engineer waterways around the city, Mary did illustrations for Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorn, and some publications that brought our pioneer western life into the awareness of people living in the east.

Author Wallace Stegner wrote a book on Mary’s life that is more fiction than fact. She didn’t get much credit for it, and he won a Pulitzer Prize.

A play called “Fair Use” was written and performed about them both. Our friends at Radio Boise have a chance for you to hear a performance at this site.

Stacey Guill has done over 20 years of research on Mary Hallock Foote, and is full of knowledge about Foote Park. You’ll want to get her book, “Stone House in the Cañon.” She designed one of the information plaques at the park, and continues to learn more about this family, and their story.

Let your mind journey into Mary’s life and story, and let yourself experience the journey by taking the drive across Lucky Peak dam, turn right, and find the park at the end of the road by the river.

    Embrace Your Storm

Jonathon Nadeau is a creator, film fest organizer, computer genius, and guitarist.

    He is also blind.

He chats about his life, positive outlook, music, and his film fest.

Positive outlook is so important right now, especially to me. I am recovering from surgery for colon cancer, which came as a complete and terrifying surprise. I took one of those home tests and it flagged something, so I got a colonoscopy. I was sure they’d find nothing, I had no pain or symptoms. I woke up being asked what my favorite hospital was. Please, if you’re 45 or older, get a home FIT or Cologuard test, or colonoscopy. Catching this early could have saved my life.

I was contacted by The Tournadeau Film Fest regarding my short film, “Violin Scratches,” featuring violinist Gaelynn Lea. Gaelynn is busy scoring music for the Broadway prodution of MacBeth! Gaelynn and her music continue to inspire people globally. Last week, film fest organizer Jonathan Nadeau had an hour-long Zoom chat neither of us wanted to end. He asked many questions about my film and work, and I realized I wanted right away to schedule a separate Zoom so you could meet him and hear his story.

Jonathon and I start by chatting about the last session I mixed by Mongolian Throat Singers, The Hu.

Deadline for the Tournadeau Film Fest is June 30th. TournadeauFreedom is a code that will get you free entry through Film Freeway. We talked about all kinds of music, and how he had discovered the powerful drumming by The Eastern Medicine Singers.

I’ve only been to Connecticut once, and absolutely loved it. I hope someday to make it to Putnam to catch this festival, or any of the creative projects Jonathon is involved in. My hope is to soon hear him playing a left-handed mandolin!
